Yes, thanks Heather, I've had a good search through the UK National Archives site. I found his attestation document there. He was at Anglesea barracks in Portsea in the 1861 census, so the regiment must have gone to the Cape sometime after that date. I found the regiment's broad movements on another site, only the years, nothing more specific. regards, Barry
