    3. Hello Maureen What an interesting story - only last week I came across a list of persons being given "licences" to sell liquor at establishments in the Southern Suburbs - this appeared in the 1870 Government Gazette but I cannot remember which week it was. There is a James Farrell who also appears in Family Register of the South African Nation who arrived in 1820 from Ireland and married on 28/1/1821 to Sara Eilh. Craayenstein van die Kaap in Cape Town. She died on 26/12/1831 aged 52 years 7 months and 29 days. He then married Susanna Louisa HERTZOG in Wynberg on 7/8/1837. then FARRELL, William Joseph Henry born 27/11/1873 in Simonstown son of J.W. Farrell of Kenilworth. He married in 1908 to Maggie daughter of P.T.R. SCHABORT from Pretoria. There are 8 pages of FARRELL in SA Genealogies. hope this helps Heather Heather's South African Genealogy Help List www.genealogy.co.za Scribes Ink. 3. Hi Heather At UPE they have condensed Government Gazettes for 1846 pertaining to liquor licences. I looked through this briefly on my last visit to the library, but didn't make any notes. I'm not very sure about this, but I vaguely recall mention of the Albany district, which of course, would not be applicable to your mailing list as it only deals with Cape Town and the surrounds. However, I can have a look at this again should there be any interest. I cannot promise when this look-up can be done as UPE is very far from home and my visits are limited to twice a month. Best wishes Becky ----- Original Message ----- From: "Heather MacAlister" <heather@genealogy.co.za> To: <SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 05, 2004 11:48 AM Subject: Re: [South-Africa-Cape-Town] Randalls Hotel, Rondebosch, FARRELL > Hello Maureen > > What an interesting story - only last week I came across a list of persons > being given "licences" to sell liquor at establishments in the Southern > Suburbs - this appeared in the 1870 Government Gazette but I cannot remember > which week it was. > > There is a James Farrell who also appears in Family Register of the South > African Nation who arrived in 1820 from Ireland and married on 28/1/1821 to > Sara Eilh. 3. Hi Becky I was starting to give up on getting any reply to this enquiry...! I know this List is about CT, but I do have tantalising clues that there may have been close CT-Eastern Cape links between these families. Also, I've just recently read some of a book called "The Cape Parliament" (which has chosen this moment to hide itself!! so I can't give you full details) We cannot divorce the history of Cape Town and the Eastern Cape between 1820 and -- when? -- I can't think of the date when the Cape moved from "responsible government" to "self-government". In fact, I'm sure this close relationship persisted up to the creation of Union in 1910. After the creation of the Cape Legislature, the Eastern Cape representatives had to spend considerable time in Cape Town whenever Parliament was sitting. Therefore, we should not seek to draw artificial boundaries between areas of our research. The Cape Town Archives are, after all, the repository for the entire province. Weird, I didn't get Heather's earlier message via the List at all, but that might have more to do with the teething problems I'm having with a new PC than the List. Thanks, Heather, I have the CRAAYENSTEIN info, didn't know about HERTZOG, though. I've checked the FARRELL pages in SAG, but can't see any of the people I'm looking for, despite having found several related DNs. I think the SAG pedigrees are all unrelated branches, but only time will tell whether any of them connect to mine. What I'd really like is some help in finding the historical location of Randalls Hotel in Rondebosch, also to resolve WHICH Clifton Street it might have been -- I don't have historical maps for that part of Cape Town. Info about liquour licences would also be great, but no pressure, anyone -- it IS the Easter long weekend, after all... 3. Hi Maureen Don't have a problem you sending any info to the mailing list as long as it does not become an "1820 settler list" Which Clifton Street are you looking for one in Rondebosch? There is a Clifton Road in Claremont, Clifton Road in Clifton, Clifton Rd in Mowbray (close to Rondebosch), Muizenberg, Tamboerskloof, District Six and Observatory There was a C. Randall living at 42 Fenton Road Salt River in 1900 and E.G. Randall living at Eureka Road Rondebosch. There was also a Dr. A.G.W. Farrell who lived at 1 Reform Rd Rondebosch. Reform Rd is about two hundred metres behind the main road in the vicinity of Westerford High School. Hope this helps kind regards Heather Heather's South African Genealogy Help List www.genealogy.co.za Scribes Ink.
