I am working on the life of THOMAS ARTHUR FORD, who went down on the Mendi. Thanks to John Boje we now know that he was in the 5th Lancers during the Boer War, probably joining up in Exeter, Devon, although he came from Fauls or Fauls Green in Shrewsbury, where he had been apprenticed as a blacksmith. He was married to SARAH PRISCILLA SMITH, and had children by her ERNEST CLIFF (known as CLIFFORD), JOHN WESLEY, REGGIE (perhaps short for REGINALD), and WALTER KESMAN. When Sarah died, c1913/15, he married CLARA BEYER, a Swiss girl. Their daughter MARY was born after he sailed for Europe. SARAH died in Pilgrimsrest, and we are wondering if KESMAN was perhaps her mother's maiden surname... We understand that one of his sons by Sarah had twin daughters. The youngest, WALTER KESMAN FORD, was adopted by Sarah's family. We think that ERNEST CLIFF, known as CLIFFORD, may have married an IDA HADLEY and had twin daughters. THey would probably be in their sixties now. They lived in Sydenham, Johannesurg. REGGIE, who may have been REGINALD ARTHUR, lived in Port Elizabeth and his wife was named IRENE MAUD, surname unknown. Nothing is known of JOHN WESLEY FORD or WALTER KESMAN FORD. Any information about any of these people would be gratefully received. Go well! Ivy Trott.
Hello Ivy I checked through my book on Swiss people in South Africa and thought there might be a mention on these names but sadly there were none. kind regards Heather Heather's South African Genealogy Help List www.genealogy.co.za Scribes Ink.
