Hello Jim George Paton was born in Scotland and married in Cape Town on 27/11/1819 to Magdalena Johanna Preiss (sic) - she was baptised on 4/8/1793 and was the daughter of F Preiss.(sic) Death notices can be searched for on the National Archives web site at www.national.archives.gov.za - you will however only be given a brief description of the document and will not be able to view it or order it over the internet. You will either have to contact the archives directly or pay a researcher. Marriage records, unless you know exactly which church they were married in, is a bit more difficult. Marriage registers are housed in the National records as well as different parish records but not all. There is no official civil registration list in South Africa which can be consulted via the internet. The main older cemeteries around Cape Town are long gone but records are still around. I found these cemetery recordings for you: George Ponty PATON died on 15 Feb 1827. George was buried in Somerset Road Cemetery,Cape Town,District Cape,Western Cape, Rsa. George Ponty Paton. George was a Lieutenant in the Cape Mounted Rifles and married Magdalene Johanna Cornelia Prys, probably prior to 1820. They had 5 children all born in Cape Town; Alexander Prys, (B. Sept 8, 1820); Martha Elizabeth, (B. Oct 20, 1823, D. at Sea Point S.A. Jan 31, 1828); Dorothea, (B. Apr. 27, 1825); George Ponty, (B. Oct 24 1826, D. Feb 15, 1827 at 16 Strand St.) James, (B. Sept. 3 1828) Magdalene died Oct 27, 1828 in Cape Town and George moved back to Scotland. I am going to be in Cape Town at the end of October and would like to verify the above and obtain further information if possible. How would I go about checking the marriage, births and deaths - through civil registration or parish records? Are any of the early records indexed and/or transcribed? What cemeteries would have been in use in the 1820's? Any information that would assist me as I have limited time would be appreciated.
