Hello Dunia Thanks very much for the reply. Sorry Somerset Road Cemetery has been gone since I arrived on this planet and that is almost half a century ago. I have the plot numbers somewhere but if you can remind me next will I will have a look as I am going away. With reference to Peter Philips book his references at the back correspond to documents in the Cape Town Archives. You can search the National Archives web site at www.national.archives.gov.za but many thousands of documents are not indexed on their site but are in hard copy inventories. Can view or order any documents on this web site but will only be given a brief description. You will then either have to write to the archives or pay a private researcher. Strand Street is no longer a residential Street and has not been for probably more than half a century. The very section of a few small blocks however do have some residential homes. Strand Street is one of the main thoroughfare roads of the city centre of Cape Town and companies are starting to turn the top floors of the buildings in to very expensive apartments - stunning place to live. The Cape Town Archives and the National Library in Cape Town are just some of the places to go to. kind regards Heather kind regards Heather Heather's South African Genealogy Help List at www.genealogy.co.za will be moving on 19th September to www.familytree.co.za Join the Cape Town Family History Society www.ancestors.co.za/society/socweb.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Westell" <jwestell@netrover.com> To: <SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 23, 2004 4:56 AM Subject: [South-Africa-Cape-Town] George Paton Heather & Dunia: Thank you for the information and the offer of assistance. From the information provided by Heather I have a couple of questions. 1) Is the Somerset Road Cemetery still in existence? If so how can I contact them to get the plot numbers etc. 2) Concerning the death record of MJC Paton, nee Prys a notice is provided (see Peter Philip: British Residents at the Cape) Is this a book or a reference work? Is this available via the internet or would it be available in say the main library of Cape Town? 3) From the family records that I have it indicates the George Ponty Paton died at 16 Strand St. I am assuming that this is a residence but am I correct? Does the street still exist and is it still a residential area? 4) For genealogy research is there a particular library or archive that I should go to in Cape Town? Again thanks for the information. Any further information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
