Good Day All Found the following regulation in a 1847 Government Gazette which made me think that we have things pretty easy these days :-) "The water in Church Street shall run free every evening from 9 until 4o'clock in the morning and from 12 to 2 o'clock in the afternoon of every day and the whole of Sundays. .....the Mill dam to be closed at 6 every evening and opened a 4 o'clock every morning and any person using the water thus to run free in both Church and Mill streets for the purpose of irrigating his or her garden shall incur a fine of not exceeding 3 pounds nor less than one pound sterling.....Every person who shall be found washing in the water courses or throwing filth into or near them or in any manner defiling the same shall on conviction incur a fine of not exceeding one pound nor less than 5 shillings sterling.......The places given out to wash are...to wit the Caledon (Baths) River and the Baths water above the Mill dam and except at those places and in the gardens no person shall be allowed to wash their linen or hang it out to dry on the outside of their garden hedges under a penalty of not e! xceeding two pounds nor less than 5 shillings sterling..."
