Hi Derek Here is the details for the Military Archives: Military & Personnel Archives Documentation Centre - the Documentation Centre of the Department of Defence houses local military archives and personnel records dating from 1912 when the Union Defence Force was formed until present day. This also includes military personnel files, record cards and medical files of volunteers that fought in the First World War (1914-18) and the Second World War (1939-45). The Documentation Centre offers an enquiry and research facility to the general public and military personnel. Genealogical related enquiries should be forwarded to the following postal address: The Deputy Director, Documentation Centre (Personnel Archives) Private Bag X289, Pretoria 001. Fax: 027-12-323561. This office does not maintain a web site or the facilities to answer enquiries by email. Standard charges for photo-copies are 60 cents per A4 sheet. It is important to note that archives and records older than fifty years are not permitted to be copied. The issuing of service records or other general requests are usually dealt with within three weeks. kind regards Heather Heather's South African Genealogy Help List at www.genealogy.co.za is soon due to be re-vamped and re-launched. Each Service Record shows exactly where the soldier and regiment were deployed giving dates of deployment and other details such as conduct and illnesses. These records should give you a very good idea of your grandfather's movements. The staff at this Archive are extremely helpful but there is a limit to the research that they will perform on your behalf. I can, however, refer you to a researcher who specializes in these records.
