Hello Bob Historically, malaria was a major cause of mortality and morbidity claiming thousands of lives, and causing major economic losses particularly in northern Transvaal. Long periods of drought followed by heavy rains provided suitable breeding sites for mosquitoes, and thus malaria spread widely covering almost the whole of Transvaal, as far south as the Magaliesberg and the Witwatersrand. In 1928 several locally acquired cases were reported in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg (Ingram and De Meillon 1927-1929). South Africa is experiencing the worst season in three decades with more than 43 000 cases and 310 deaths reported since September last year and experts are warning that the worst is yet to come, particularly as there has been heavy rainfall over the past few weeks in KwaZulu/Natal, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga - the country's malaria hotspots. With regards to burial records on line - there are hardly any at all. You can try www.familytree.co.za which has the largest database of actual records on line in South Africa. To find out where Reuben was buried - you will first need to search the National Archives web site at www.national.archives.gov.za once you have located his estate papers - you will need to either write to the archives or pay a researcher to obtain these documents. In his estate papers you should find a funeral parlour account giving details of his funeral arrangements. If he does not have estate papers he should have a death certificate (medical form - not to be confused with a death notice) these indexes are held in the National Archives in Cape Town and are not searchable on line. If you are assuming he might have died here - you could be looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Hope this helps Kind regards Heather Heather MacAlister Web Site Manager for: www.familytree.co.za + www.ancestry.mweb.co.za E-Centre 46 Hof Street Gardens 8001 Cape Town SOUTH AFRICA Tel: +27-21-481-8316 Fax: +27-21-481-8333 -----Original Message----- From: Bob Cunning [mailto:rcun9703@bigpond.net.au] Sent: 25 October 2005 01:25 AM To: SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [South-Africa-Cape-Town] Reuben BAILEY Hello from Australia, I have just joined this list and am introducing myself. I am trying to find the answer to 2 questions. My Great Grandfather,Reuben BAILEY, died in ''Cape Town, Cape Colony, South Africa'' on 22 Apr 1899. This notation is shown by a deponent when his will was probated here in Queensland. It also states that he died from Malarial Fever. I am puzzled by this as I did not think that Malaria was present in South Africa. However he had been on safari in Rhodesia, so possibly contracted the disease there. That is my first question. Secondly, there is no evidence of his being buried in Australia, so I presume that he was buried in Cape Town. However, a search of NAAIRS has proved fruitless. That is my second problem, how can I check where he is buried?. Any help that I can receive to solve these questions will be greatly appreciated.
