Hello Jenny If he was a master mariner you should consult the following sources: Cape Almanac directories which were published every year from 1828 until late 1880's - there is a shipping intelligence section which gives information similar to this: Ship Name: Lady Borringdon Ship Type: Ship Cargo: Naval Stores Captain Name: R Leithbridge Nation: English Departed From: London Departure Date: 27 May 1817 Departure To: Cape & Mauritius Departure To Date: 25 Jun 1817 Source : 1818 African Court Calendar Book - www.familytree.co.za Also the Cape Government Gazette published much the same information. This newspaper was published on a weekly basis and can be found in the Cape Town Archives and the National Library in Cape Town. Also housed in the Cape Archives are the following: Registers of Arrivals and Departures of Ships, Algoa Bay 1846-1901 are held under Reference CC - i.e. the Archives of the Secretary, Cape Town Chamber of Commerce. These registers give the captain's name and sometimes the first class passengers. Ref PWD -Archives of the Secretary of Public Works - Volume 2/401 holds passenger lists for 1872-1884 - the Captains names should appear here as well. I am keen to know what shipping records are retained and where they would be held so I can try and piece together further information about the family.
