    2. Hi Tombi I enjoyed your letter about being called a "Rooi Nek". It brings back memories to me of being in the South African military service. As I was English speaking, I was called a Rooi Nek by a lot of people, especially those with ranks higher than mine. At that point I did not know my ancestory, and thought my HOUGH surname as in "Houghton" Johannesburg, was from English descent. Well since I have started my family research, I have realised I have less than 5% English in my family. My grandfather who came out of the Second World War as Gerald John HOUGH, went into it as Gert Johannes Jacobus HOUGH. Through further research I have now realized that I am related to 41% of all the French Hugenout's that came into South Africa (27 Surnames and counting), Hough was German, with me having many other German ancestors and just as many Dutch. To conclude, it is very interesting what people will say in ignorance, I am most probably more Afrikaaner than most and would have spoken Afrikaans at home if my grandfather had not abandoned his wife Ellen Maria SWARTS and children at the end of the war. Have a good day! I enjoy reading list news. I have very little information on my ancestors Louis FOURIE and his wife Susanna CORDIER other than the approximate dates and places of the births and deaths. If anyone has any further information on these people I would be delighted to receive it. I have Louis FOURIE born about 1671 in Pontaix, Drome, Dauphine France the son of Louis FOURIE and Susanna CORBIER (I wonder if this is correct...the names sound astonishingly like his and his wife's), He died about 1750 in Wellington, Cape of Good Hope. He was married to Susanna CORDIER (CORTJE) who was born about 1674 in Paarl, Cape of Good Hope died about 1715 at Drakenstein (later Paarl), Cape of Good Hope. Their daughter Susanna FOURIE was born about 1694 in Wellington, Cape of Good Hope and died on the 26th April 1762 at Stellenbosch. She married Jean NEL (son of Gwillaume NEL & Jeanne Neel DE LA BATTE in about 1716. 3. Hi Wendel, As my father was born in Yorkshire I've always thought of him as an Englishman. As it turns out now with my research he's probably only about 1/3 English and 2/3 Scottish! It has given me masses of satisfaction being able to send the family tree to my daughter in Antigua...she's married to a Scot who can't stand me. Absolutely delightful finding that I am descended from James V of Scotland (by his mistress Elizabeth Carstairs)....my ancestor Sir John STEWART, 1st LORD DARNLEY as an acknowledged son of the king. Naturally one can then follow back through most of the Scottish Kings....I doubt my daughter will have rubbed her husband's nose in it but it gave me an immense feeling of satisfaction!! When my great aunt Suzanne STEPHEN wrote her Obituary for the newspaper (can't remember if it was in the Star)...she said I am of English and Afrikaaner descent...my mother underlined Afrikaaner and wrote in the margine....Tripe!!! She would be rolling in her grave (had she not been cremated) to realise she's a 4th cousin twice removed from Oom Paul Kruger...a 4th cousin of President Blackie SWART (through the same descent)....she would be horrified at all the TREGARDS, NELS, FOURIES, CORDIERS, RETIEFS etc. which make up her ancestry. I personally am revelling in it all....makes me feel so much more cosmopolitan... I guess I really shouldn't tell you this, but I was convulsed with laughter at an email I received from Glynis when we were processing the NEL line...she said "They fled from France....I don't know what they were fleeing from?!" It felt odd having to expalin about the persecution of the Protestants in France by good old king Louis!! We did that as part of our history when I was at school in the Transvaal in the 1950's. I have to say that since I started family history my Afrikaans reading has improved by leaps and bounds...I still sukkel finding words when I talk it! HOUGH is quite a common name here in the U.K.....I've come across several but rather than it being pronounced as in Houghton it's pronounced 'Huff' Best wishes, Tombi ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, October 12, 2010 12:06 PM Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN Digest, Vol 5,Issue 201- Fourie, Cordier > Hi Tombi > > I enjoyed your letter about being called a "Rooi Nek". > > It brings back memories to me of being in the South African military > service. > As I was English speaking, I was called a Rooi Nek by a lot of people, > especially those with ranks higher than mine. > At that point I did not know my ancestory, and thought my HOUGH surname as > in "Houghton" Johannesburg, was from English descent. > > Well since I have started my family research, I have realised I have less > than 5% English in my family. > My grandfather who came out of the Second World War as Gerald John HOUGH, > went into it as Gert Johannes Jacobus HOUGH. > Through further research I have now realized that I am related to 41% of > all > the French Hugenout's that came into South Africa (27 Surnames and > counting), Hough was German, with me having many other German ancestors > and > just as many Dutch. > > To conclude, it is very interesting what people will say in ignorance, I > am > most probably more Afrikaaner than most and would have spoken Afrikaans at > home if my grandfather had not abandoned his wife Ellen Maria SWARTS and > children at the end of the war. > > Have a good day! > I enjoy reading list news. > > Wendel HOUGH > > > > Thaba Tsweni Lodge & Safaris > PO Box 45 > Graskop > 1270 > > Tel: 013 7671380 > Fax: 086 5241131 > Email: [email protected] > Web: www.blyderivercanyonaccommodation.com > GPS Co-ordinates: S-24* 51'07.20" E 30*50'41.77" > > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of > [email protected] > Sent: Tuesday, October 12, 2010 9:01 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN Digest, Vol 5, Issue 201 > > > > Today's Topics: > > 1.
