    3. Hello Dennis A tidewaiter is a customs officer. He would check the goods as they came off the ship or were loaded on and of he confiscated the goods, probably took them home to his family. My great great grandfather was a tidewaiter and so was his father. There are hundreds of references on Ancestry24.co.za for the surname of Field. Many of them were from District Six. And Ann with 7 children a few months later on the Anne Dashwood. 2 more children were born in Adelaide, South Australia, Aus.     3. Hi Dennis I have a Dennis FIELD who married Mavis Edythe (Maisie) born ETHEREDGE. Maisie died in 1986 at the age of 81 years which makes her year of birth 1905. This FIELD family lived in East London and their children were Eric, Barry and Robin FIELD. Are they part of your tree?
