Hello, this is my first posting to the list. I do hope someone out there can help me. I am looking for George Nicholson (Esq), he was born about 1821 - I know not where, I cannot find any birth/Bap for him in England. From his marriage certificate I know that his father was also George, a Gentleman. I have found him on the 1841 census aged 20 living alone in Westminster, London an Apprentice Solicitor! He then gets married in Dec 1841 to Ellen Wilkes in Ware, Hertfordshire, England and is of full age and a Gentleman. Their 1st child Ellen Maria was born in 1844 Cape of Good Hope, What I would like to know is "When and how did they get there, where did they live there and is there a Baptism for Ellen"? They were obviously going backwards and forwards as the 2nd daughter Edith was born in England in 1847, so are there any passenger lists? In 1894 Edith travelled to New York on a ship called "Paris" she was 48. In 1900 aged 52 she is in Multnomah, Oregon. Seems she never got married and never came back.. The 3rd daughter Georgina, my Great Grandmother was also born in The Cape of Good Hope in 1850/1, someone kindly found me her Baptism which was in the Cathedral Church on 20th July 1851, abode Rondebosch, the witnesses were two females Anne and Maria Nicholson ............. are they sisters of George? On Georgina's marriage certificate in 1871 she states that her father George is a Solicitor, I can find no evidence of George living in England at any time since the 1841 census, there are none of the family anywhere here on the 51 census and by the 61 his wife and 3 daughters are with her mother and there they stay. No sign of George!! I hope I haven't been too long winded and that someone somewhere might just know something ............. anything. Thank you in anticipation, Diana
Hello Diana, Seems you may be in luck, there appear to be several related family members on these sites below, and also look up under the other surnames and names that appear on these documents. You may need to get copies of these documents - you could use a SA researcher, I have used one very sucessfuly to get copies of documents and do some further reseach, rates per hour are very good. There were no formal record of all passengers arriving by ship in Cape Town until late 1800's. Many passengers are listed, but certainly not all.The only record would be in England as they kept records of people embarking on ships there. Try the SA website Ancestry24 http://ancestry24.com/ There are several references here that you would find interesting, click on each name for more info. Also look at the witnesses names for baptisms and marriages, one Elizabeth Ellen, seems that the name Ellen was passed down as this name appears a few times where there is a Nicholson. http://ancestry24.com/?group=on&s=search&srchSurname=Nicholson&srchName=George&submit=%C2%A0Ellen Nicholson -http://ancestry24.com/?group=on&s=search&srchName=+Ellen&srchSurname=Nicholson&searchTab=DataRecordsNAAIRS - a lot of referenceshttp://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300dlhttp://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300dr?2011011119314420243102Good luck!Marilyn----- Original Message -----From: "New Pip" <[email protected]>To: <[email protected]>Sent: Tuesday, January 11, 2011 6:26 PMSubject: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] George Nicholson 1821> Hello, this is my first posting to the list.
