I am hoping someone out there has some information for me. We show that Richard Humphries and his family were sponsored to come from England to South Africa by James Stanton reported to be a cousin, in 1826. Can anyone tell me how these two are related? Hello fellow listers I have made some headway researching my mother's paternal side but am in need of some assistance. My 3rd great grandfather, L.W.J.G. LESTER, was born on 11/06/1826 in (Armagh County?), Ireland. >From his journal, we learn he got a free passage to the Cape & later became a constable in East London. After reading www.eastlondon-labyrinth.com/germans/lady-kennaway-02.jsp<http://www.eastlondon-labyrinth.com/germans/lady-kennaway-02.jsp> which has a detailed account of the shipwreck and passenger lists, I have come to believe that my 3rd great grandparents, Louis & Jane GAFFNEY, are being referred to below & would very much like to get confirmation of their marriage which I deduce was on 24/11/1857: "In the meantime, four of the women were immediately offered employment at East London and a further two found husbands and were married at once. One of these was a German girl who was swept off by a German settler. This was probably Fredericka Schulle, the only German girl in the party, who had been enlisted from Middlesex and not from Ireland. The other was married to a local police constable. None of the artisans chose to remain at East London, although some would return later." After Jane's death in King William's Town on 05/03/1871, aged 34, Louis moved to Pondoland where he remarried a Miss WATSON. Jane had borne him seven children (Susanna, Emma, Louis, Clement, Albert, Edwin & Henry Charles - my 2nd great grandfather) & he needed a wife to look after them. Louis apparently married a 3rd time, possibly in Durban, where he lived until shortly before his 98th birthday. I located this in some photocopies I was given from research carried out by one of my LESTER ancestors. "Evidently Louis GOLDSCHMIDT served in the German Army, which he deserted in order to join the British Army. He was pardoned by Queen Victoria on condition that, because he had brought disgrace to the family name, he adopted his mother's maiden name which was LESTER and tacked it on after his surname of GOLDSMITH - thus the double-barrelled surname "Goldsmith Lester" came into being." If anyone can provide me with confirmation of any one of his 3 marriages, I'd be most grateful. Kind regards, Tara (born SHRIVES) taraanorton@gmail.com<mailto:taraanorton@gmail.com> Researching: ATKINSON (ENG), BENECKE, KILLERBY (ENG), (GOLDSMITH-)LESTER (GER/IRE), LOURENS, MARTIN, MILLIKEN (IRE), PARKER, SHRIVES (IRE), WINGHAM (ENG) and related families. ________________________________ NCT FORESTRY CO-OPERATIVE LIMITED http://www.nctforest.com This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. How sad reading the notices. A Mr and Mrs W.E. Thrash lost their only son on the 6 August and then had a daughter on the 10th August. In the grief they must have suffered, I hope their little girl helped ease it. Thanks for all the notices which I receive in Ireland and read them all. Dear Heather I have also been researching my family tree for over 20 years and laughed at you saying your husband can't understand it! Neither does mine!!! And as for visiting graveyards he thinks I am nuts!!! But I love it and have had years of pleasure from it. Continue to enjoy it. Did you once say you were looking for something in Ireland? New records have recently become available and if you would like me to, I can see if I can find something for you. Hi Robyn Unfortunately none of the Argus newspapers have been digitised. The only place you can browse them is at the National Library. There is a list of records available on Ancestry24 for churches that have had baptisms, marriages and burials transcribed http://ancestry24.com/collection-type/?id=384 Baptisms http://ancestry24.com/collection-type/?id=388 Burials http://ancestry24.com/collection-type/?id=394 Marriages The Rootsweb mailing list for South Africa, Eastern-Cape and British Immigrants have transcribed records there The LDS have Dutch Reformed Church Records, Methodist and Anglican Records but not all have been indexed or are all searchable. The Electronic branch of the Genealogical Society of South Africa has newspapers extracts with baptisms, marriages and burials http://www.eggsa.org/newspapers/ Hope this helps Heather Heather MacAlister Channel Manager E heather@ancestry24.co.za T +27 (021) 468 8957 F +27 (0)86 5810390 Join us on Facebook twitter.com/ancestry24 | Skype: ancestry24 7th Floor , 11 Adderley Street, Cape Town, 8000 | www.ancestry24.co.za -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Robyn Sent: 20 May 2012 11:18 AM To: south-africa-cape-town@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN Digest, Vol 7, Issue 132 Hello I have some questions.
