    3. Hi Pat There is a book called "The Story of Hottentots Holland" by Peggy Heap which was published in 1970 with the sub-title "Social history of Somerset West, the Strand, Gordon's Bay and Sir Lowry Pass over three centuries" which states that "The Lourens River was bridged by the Central Road Board in 1845. This double-span bridge was proclaimed a national monument in 1938 in which year a new bridge was completed." The Central Road Board was formed in 1843 on account of the "appalling condition of the roads in the colony". "The Colonial Secretary, the Hon. John Montagu - he had fought as a subaltern at the battle of Waterloo - was the force behind this body. One of the Central Road Board's first tasks was the construction of a hard road across the Cape Downs. This work was undertaken by Lt Col Charles Mitchell, Surveyor-General and Civil Engineer of the Cape Colony, who had built Sir Lowry's Pass in 1830." The completion was widely welcomed but... "Within two years long stretches of the road almost disappeared under drifting sands. Nothing daunted, Mitchell then raised it in the worst places to a height of sixteen feet. At the same time Montagu was experimenting with the planting of Hottentot or sour fig (Mesembryanthemum) in an attempt to hold the sand. This was partially successful, but Montagu was not satisfied and, every South African bush and tree having been tried, he imported from Australia seeds of the Port Jackson willow, wattle and hakea. These grew and spread, the Hrd Road was saved and the sand of the Cape Downs controlled to a marked degree". These Australian trees are now widely distributed throughout the Western Cape and in many places threaten the indigenous fynbos species, and strenuous efforts are being taken to eliminate them. I am sure that Peggy Heap's book is now out of print, but I have a copy and, as it has many stories of local families going back many years, if anyone would like me to look up anything please get in touch with me, and if I am not overwhelmed by the enquiries, I will see what I can find! 3. That's exactly what I needed Heather. She is English this lady, who married a chap from Zimbabwe whose parents came from SomersetW. You ( and I ) must be constantly aware of how stories get distorted. I had occasion this week to give an address to Rotary and was astonished at how few of those " leaders" of our society knew that a place like Namibia existed. They asked innumerable questions. thankfully I was able to answer. One thing genealogy does is to widen one's horizons and witness man's fragility! Thanks my dear. I cruise your site but am really getting past active research. But not interest. You do a splendid job. 3. Pat Hi1 There may be some locals from SS West that would have more knowledge but There were definately no POW's Italian or otherwise in 1860. The !st Boer war ran from 1880 to 1881 which was largely confined to the old Transvaal, then the 2nd Boer was much more lengthy from 1899 to 1902 which engulfed the whole country of what is today South Africa. These wars were largly what today would be called freedom struggles; the reasons were complex and great and terrible were the results, as in any war. It was a war which Britian never forgot as the great power of the time they got a bloody nose at the hands of relatively few local antagonists. For genealogists there is a rich and wonderful history surronding this period in SA's history. There is an excellent Boer War archive both in SA and in Kew in the UK. The Italian POW's were sent to SA dunring the 2nd WW my own family had a few on the family farm, my mom told stories of how they would gather in and play instruments and sing beautiful Italian songs in the evenings after work on the farm. many of these POW's returned to SA after the war and settled all over the country bringing with them their varied skills in all fields of endevour. As you say their building skills were employed all over and many of them were skilled stonemasons too.. Your Mom may have heard of the AWB not the ABW and it stands for the "Afrikaans Weestands Beweging", The Afrikaner Resistance Movement , a very small but vocal group that featured for a while in the early 1990's but largley ignored by the rest of the country. I'm not absolutley sure but the Lourensford bridge was on the main route between Cape Town and the road along the route that goes over the mountains and along the so called Garden route and when built was undoubtabley an important crossing. 3. Hello Pat That bridge could very well have been built by the Italian prisoners of war but I have yet to find confirmed evidence. Bainskloof to Du Toit's Kloof was built by 500 Italian prisoners of were used in the early stages of the work and in 1949 it was completed with local labour. Chapman's Peak, Outeniqua pass and the beautiful Bulshoek dam stone wall was also built by Italian prisoners of war. I would suggest that you contact the local historian at Lourensford wine estate as I am sure they will be able to help. I did find this " We now turn left into Main Street, Somerset West.De Grote Algemene Weg of yesteryear. As we cross the bridge completed in 1938 we see the original double span Table Mountain sandstone bridge on the right. It is dated 1845 and is a National Monument." Which means it was a new bridge built around the 2nd World War. http://www.gordonsbay.com/somersetwest_1.htm Today the town boasts the largest concentration of millionaire residents in the country an the 2nd largest German community outside of Germany. 3. Trying to trace more info on the Schreuders in South Africa. The family story goes that three brothers emigrated here from Germany (Hamburg), one went to Johannesburg for the gold, one to Kimberley for diamonds and one to Wellington to be a wine farmer. Abraham Johannes Gert SCHREUDER is the only name I have - the one who went to Wellington. He also built the Bainskloof Hotel which was burnt down in 1926. Then moved to Pretoria. He was nicknamed Awie (pronounced RV) and that name has been passed down. I am trying to find names of any of his other children and confirmation of his wife/s name/s as I think he may have married twice (I have a gravestone image that shows his first wife Elizabeth M JOUBERT died very young). I only have Johannes Daniel as his son. If I had names of other children I could work out if there were two moms or one, based on her date of death. Johannes Daniel SCHREUDER married Johanna Jacoba SCHEFFER (d.o Andreas Willem & Johanna Jacoba) and their children were Awie (no second name) & Andreas Willem. Hop someone has some info for me :)

I'm looking up my great grandfather Herbert Lawrence Richardson who worked in the Standard Bank in Cape town for 51/2 years. I thought I'd better let you know in case you need to recheck the email address. All the best with your research.
