    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] Pietersen - Pieterse surname change
    2. Louis Pieterse
    3. Hi all, I'm trying to source as much info about our family (Pieterse) from Western Cape late 1800's to present. Most of the older generation has passed away with their knowledge but I remember a story that the surname used to be Pietersen and changed to Pieterse. The family lived in the Ceres district and also in Tulbach and later in Stellenbosch. Names: Johannes Jacobus Abram Pieterse I (b 23.01.1891 -d 02.02.1972) Hendrika Johanna (Geldenhuys) Pieterse (b 01.10.1893 -d 11.07.1947) Johannes Jacobus Abram Pieterse II (b 07.03.1918 -d 14.04.1972) Huibrecht Aletta Johanna (Truter) Pieterse (b 14.07.1926 -d 09.03.1979) Obviously the surname changed pre- 1891 but I have no information as far back as that. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Louis Pieterse

    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] De Villiers / De Vere Families in the Cape Town area
    2. Gordon Collingwood
    3. Hi Folks I am looking at a potential name change in our family. From what older family members have said, my theory is that our surname was changed from De Villiers to Collingwood. Is anyone researching De Villiers families in the Cape Town area? My gg grandfather's christian name was unknown but my gg grandmother was Maria. Maria married prior to 1850. They were Anglican. My great grandfather's three christian names were William Frederick De Vere. Was De Vere Maria's maiden name, or was our surname De Vere? William Frederick was born c1850. He at least two unnamed brothers. All three served in the navy where one was a doctor. By his NZ death certificate, William Frederick left Sth Africa in c1870 for New Zealand where he remained. However he only appears on the NZ radar in Port Chalmers in 1875. Does this ring any bells? Any suggestions of where to look to try and confirm or not this theory would be much appreciated. Gordon

    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] MILLER / WALTERS family - Wepener, O.F.S. & Pietermaritzburg, Natal
    2. Tara Norton
    3. Dear All I am on a quest to locate birth/baptism/christening/death records for my 2nd great grandmother, Annie Elizabeth WALTERS (neé MILLER), & her older siblings, Charlotte & Charles, amongst others possibly. I have confirmed the following from marriage information: Annie Elizabeth Miller (17, born circa 1881/1882) married John Charles WALTERS (aka Charlie, 36, born circa 1862/1863) on 24/07/1899 in Pietermaritzburg. Charlotte Kathleen MILLER (27, born circa 1873/1874) married Norman WALTERS (aka Norris?, 35, born circa 1865/1866) on 11/06/1901 in Pietermaritzburg. I have confirmed the following from NAB, MSCE, Ref: 2418/1949 & Ref: 175/1970: Charles John MILLER (born circa Feb 1880, Wepener, O.F.S?) married Magdalena Catherina Gesina DU TOIT (born 18/12/1883) in Pietermaritzburg on 21/07/1903. Their children: Henry Thomas (M), Gilbert Samuel (M), John William (M) , Norman (M), Magdalena (F). Annie's 1st child, Eva WALTERS - my great grandmother, was born at 356 Greyling Street, Pietermaritzburg, in Feb 1899. Charlotte's 1st child, Rachel WALTERS, was born at 10 Chapel Street, Pietermaritzburg, in Dec 1904. Per The Natal Almanacs, Alphabetical Directory, PMB for 1904: WALTERS, M., toy maker, 8-10 Chapel Street. Annie's 2nd child, Charlotte's last 4 children & 1 of Charles's children were all born at 81 Chapel Street, Pietermaritzburg. Per The Natal Almanacs, Alphabetical Directiory, PMB for 1907: WALTERS, Mrs. N., 81 Chapel Street. I think 81 Chapel Street is for up for rent now but may have previously been the offices of Sage Life Ltd. I do not know where the WALTERS brothers were born although it'd appear either the brother/s and/or their father served during the Boer War (1899 - 1902) - Inniskillen (Enniskillen) Regiment - Irish? I'd appreciate any input whatsoever.
