    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] Johnson/Halligan
    2. Maria Karimi
    3. My Great Grandparents lived in Cape Town, South Africa for a while and were married there.  I'm looking for their marriage certificate.   His name was James Alfred Johnson  (born Manchester, England around 1870)  Her name was Amelia Elizabeth Halligan (born Galway, Ireland around 1870).   Their first daughter was Doreen Isabel, born 8th Sept 1906 in district of Cathcart, in the colony of the Cape of Good Hope.  Their residence was Flerscher Street, Cathcart. This makes me think they were married around 1904-5. James worked as a time keeper on the South African Railways and Amelia was in service. I believe they moved back to England before the war of 1911. I'm hoping to find their marriage certificate.  Can anyone help? Thanks, Maria Karimi

HOLMES to Ethel HOPTON (nee GRAY), both of Newcastle. 5305 IN MEMORIAM DREW. - In loving memory of my dear Husband, Frederick William DREW, who died July 28th, 1919. Gone but not Forgotten. Inserted by his loving Wife and Sons. 5343 PHIPSON. - In affectionate memory of our dear Husband and Father, Howard Allison PHIPSON, who passed away, July 28th, 1921. To Memory ever dear. Inserted by his loving wife and family. 2928 OBITUARY ------x------ MR. ARTHUR FRICKER ------x------ >From Our Own Correspondent ------x------ ESTCOURT, July 25. In the passing away, at a ripe old age, of Mr. Arthur FRICKER, is recorded the loss of yet another of the old sterling type of colonist, who laid the foundation for others more fortunate, of the present generation. The late Mr. FRICKER, in his early youth, joined the Imperial Forces and saw much service, possessing several medals. Attached to the Wiltshire Regiment as Colour-Sergeant, he was stationed at Gibraltar and Malta, before coming to Natal with his regiment. He sailed for India, taking with him his wife (whom he met and married in Maritzburg), and on again returning to Natal, he fought with distinction through Secocooni Rebellion (1877-1878) and the Zulu War of 1878-1879, being wounded twice at Kambuia. Leaving the Army after 21 years' service, he returned on pension to England, where he was for some time steward of the Yarmouth Conservative Club, and on returning to Natal he entered the service of Tomkins, Railway contractor, and was for some considerable time in charge of the Railway Refreshment Rooms in Estcourt, finally opening what was known as the "Bottle Store" here. During his residence of over 20 years in Estcourt, Mr. FRICKER held the respect and affection of all who kenw him. He was a staunch supporter of the Anglican Church, and was People's Warden from 1912 to 1913, and was for many years a sidesman in St. Matthew's Church. At a Vestry meeting, held on Monday night, a vote of sympathy with the widow and daughter was passed, all standing in silence. Mr. FRICKER also took his share in the affairs of the town, being a member of the Local Board from 1908 to 1911, when he held office as Chairman of Public Works, also Building and Lighting. During the Native Rebellion of 1906 many were the acts of kindness shown by Mr. and Mrs. FRICKER to the troops passing through Estcourt, the kindly couple frequently sitting up all night in order to cheer "the boys" with cups of steaming hot coffee and tea. Mr. FRICKER was one of the foundation members of the Weenen County Lodge of Freemasons. He was at one time secretary of the Lodge, and held various positions, and was made a Life Member in 1914. A few years later, he and Mrs. FRICKER left Estcourt to live with their only daughter, the widow of the late Sergt. WARD (who was highly respected here), on her farm at Harrismith. Beyond the bare facts of his death last Friday, no details are known. The deepest sympathy is expressed for Mrs. FRICKER in her great sorrow, and for Mrs. WARD and the grandchildren. Of unflinching integrity, a most cheerful and generous disposition, with deep Christian principles, simply unostentatiously lived through all his long life, there are many hearts to-day who feel a sense of personal loss in the death of Mr. FRICKER, who was, in very truth, "a white man" all through his long and useful life. MONDAY, JULY 30, 1923 BIRTHS BARLOW JONES. - At Dundee on the 16th July, 1923, to Mr. and Mrs. Douglas BARLOW JONES, a son. 3. The following may be of interest or assistance. Manifest of Cargo (1862-1866) for watches, watch materials and jewellery lists either  A & F Spolander or Spolander & Co. It is reported that the military authorities contemplate constructing a fort on the Lion's Rump, or rather on the plateau below the Rump, and just above the Malay cemeteries, and in order to convey materials, guns etc, to that eminence a road has been surveyed and pegged out across the properties of Mr. P. PENTZ and Mrs SPOLANDER, in Scotch Kloof. - Colonies and India March 14, 1888 Regards Trish ________________________________ From: Wally And Elrine Greig <wgreig@mweb.co.za> To: SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, September 10, 2012 12:19 PM Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] H J SPOLANDER Clockmaker and Watchmaker Henry Joseph SPOLANDER was a clockmaker and watchmaker in Cape Town, in the late 19th and  20th Centuries. He traded as H J Spolander. The first shop of his, that we are aware of, was on the corner of Greenmarket Square and Longmarket Street. At a later stage he moved to Mutual Building, which is bounded by Darling, Parliament and Longmarket streets. The Greenmarket Square premises can be seen in one of Arthur Elliott's photos. Elliott arrived in Cape Town in 1900 and died in 1938. Mutual Bulding opened in 1940. Spolander clocks are still in existence in Cape Town. Mabel Anni Spolander was either the daughter or niece of H J SPOLANDER. If anyone can add anything to the above,I would be pleased to hear from them. 3. Hi Walter It is a pleasure. I found the information on Ancestry.co.uk. Unfortunately they don't have Scottish birth records - so couldn't find one. I did find Census records: 1891 Census - Falkirk Robert Greig Age 42 Stonehaven Iron Founder Clerk Agnes Greig Age 42 Forfar Jane Ann Greig Age 17 Stirling Thomas Greig Age 14 Stirling Apprentice Patternmaker Charlotte C Greig Age 13 Stirling Scholar George Greig Age 8 Stirling Scholar David Greig Age 5 Stirling Scholar In 1901 Census Robert is listed as a commercial traveller for Iron Founder In 1881 Census Robert is listed as an Iron Monger. It looks like he worked his way up in the foundry. In the 1881 Census found another child Agnes age 3 months - might have died before the 1891 Census. Thomas was not in the 1901 Census - couldn't find him. He might have gone to SA before then. If he didn't, they I did find a Thomas Greig born in Scotland about 1875 on board a ship called "High Flyer". He is listed as a Private in RMLI (Royal Marines Light Infantry.) The record doesn't say which port they were in or whether they were at sea. This was the closest records for Sarah Jane - going on birth date submitted in another post: 9 June 1882 (Ancestry24 site - photo of headstone) Sarah Jane Berry was christened in Milnrow, Lancashire 8 Dec 1882. 1891 Census - Butterworth, Rochdale, Lancashire Charles Thomas Berry Age 40 Rochdale Woollen Operative Jane Berry Age 37 Rochdale Woollen Weaver Stephen Berry Age 15 Rochdale Woollen Operative Elizabeth Berry Age 13 Rochdale Woollen Operative Sarah J Berry Age 8 Rochdale Scholar 1901 Census - Milnrow, Butterworth, Rochdale, Lancashire Charles Thomas Berry Age 51 Rochdale Woollen Drawer Jane Berry Age 49 Rochdale Stephen Berry Age 25 Rochdale Woollen Drawer Elizabeth Ann Berry Age 23 Rochdale Cotton Winder Sarah Jane Berry Age 18 Rochdale Woollen Winder The family might have worked in Ellenroad Ring Mill which was built in 1890 and is situated in Milnrow - most of it has been demolished but parts that are standing serve as a museum. Milnrow is a suburb of Rochdale which now falls under Greater Manchester. Marriage for Charles Thomas Berry & Jane Wild June 1875 Rochdale Hope this all helps. :) Regards Carrie Laing -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Wally And Elrine Greig Sent: 09 September 2012 11:14 To: south-africa-cape-town@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN Digest, Vol 7,Issue 197 Thanks to all who replied. I only found a birth for Thomas King Greig in 1879 in Marylebone, London - but he died in 1931 in London - so definitely not your ancestor if he emigrated to SA. There are a lot of entries for Sarah Jane Berry from all over the UK. The Lion Match factory is interesting, as before WW2 there was a match factory not far down the road from us in Bootle, Liverpool. 3. Hi Walter Had a quick look on Ancestry.co.uk for you and didn't find any births for Thomas Kydd Greig. It was pulled down and now has a block of flats on the site with a monument to the match works. There is a birth for a Sarah Jane Berry in West Derby (Liverpool) in Sept 1884. But not 100% sure there isn't much to go on. 3. Dear Tara Just to correct a spelling for you. The Gwladys that you transcribed is correctly spelt. It is the Welsh for Gladys and the name you had as Myfanny is actually Myfanwy - also a Welsh girl's name. My mum was Welsh and my godmother is Gwladys and just checked with my aunt about the spelling of Myfanwy. Hope this helps with any other transcriptions. I love reading all your work and look forward to getting the next bulletin a soon as I have read the current one! Thank you so much for doing them for us. All the best Lorraine Howard nee Shum. I was born and brought up in Durban but now live in Ireland. -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-cape-town-request@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, September 07, 2012 10:31 AM To: south-africa-cape-town@rootsweb.com Subject: SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN Digest, Vol 7, Issue 195 Today's Topics: 1. Killed in Delville Wood, July 16th, 1916. Second son of Mr. and Mrs. C.V. DEELEY, Dannhauser, Late Greenwood Park. "Pro Patria." 4862 OBITUARY ------x------ MR. W.H. GRIFFIN ------x------ We much regret to record the death of Mr. William Henry GRIFFIN, which occurred suddenly at his residence in Longmarket Street in the early hours of Saturday morning. The late Mr. GRIFFIN, who was in his 71st year, was about as usual on Friday, though he had not been well for some time, and his death was therefore unexpected. He was the first member for Maritzburg South in the Union Parliament, representing the constituency as a Unionist for several years, until defeated by the late Dr. BUNTINE. Mr. GRIFFIN first came to Maritzburg in 1883, when he took over from his father the business known as Messrs. SOWDEN and STODDART. He retired from that business about 15 years ago, and started the stockbroking agency now carried on by his son, Mr. H.W. GRIFFIN. He was twice married, his first wife dying prior to his coming to Maritzburg, and in 1885 he married Miss FLEMMING, a daughter of the late Mr. John FLEMMING, at one time Mayor of the City. Mrs. GRIFFINE survives her husband, and there are two daughters and a son of the marriage, together with three sons and a daughter of the deceased gentleman's earlier marriage. Always keenly interested in politics, Mr. GRIFFIN proved a very sound member in the Assembly, where he sat for some five years. He was much esteemed for his personal charm of manner and kindly nature, and was a very staunch supporter of the Congregational Church. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian Cemetery, being preceded by a short service in the Congregational Church. The last rites were administered by the Rev. William ANGUS, and among the many present at the graveside were Mr. George GRIFFIN (brother), Messrs. Henry, Norman, Kenneth and Errol GRIFFIN (sons), Mr. T. FLEMMING (brother-in-law), Mr. R. LINDSAY and Mr. R. RANDLES (sons-in-law), and many other friends and relatives of the deceased gentleman.
