    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] CALMEYER
    2. DI - DD KITS
    3. Hello Listers, My husbands Grandmother - there is some mystery about her... . Olga Violet CALMEYER - 20/10/1899 Salt River, Cape . Sister Mary - born a couple of years later. On her birth certificate - parents- John CALMEYER & Mary FOSTER (we believe she was born in Bingley, Yorkshire)He was noted as a Furniture Storekeeper in JHB. His sister was Olga Ohlsson - she lived in Cape Town. I can find nothing about the parents - no deaths, no immigration etc Where was John Calmeyer born? When did he die? The story was that her parents both died when she was young (or maybe they went away.) She was put in the care of an American Missionary until she married in JHB 29.12.1919. Her grandchildren were told that she was Jewish and from Poland... Has anyone come across these names - in a cemetery maybe? Thank you Dianne Butcher

    3. Hi all, I've been on this list, rather passively, for about a year now and I think this is an appropriate time to request assistance. My grandmother came to South Africa as an orphan of the holocaust in 1946 (aged 13) and was accompanied by her late-grandfather's second wife, a woman who she called 'Oma' (German for grandmother I believe), but whose name was Hilda Mayer. She married Leon Mayer in Germany but he died shortly before they left for South Africa. I found the image of her cemetery stone on jewishcemetery.co.za which says: Hilda Mayer (born Maier), passed away 18th June 1970. Though I have found my grandmother's immigration papers (through Naairs), I cannot find any documentation about Hilda. I would appreciate any advice or guidance about this matter! 3. Hello Diana Thank you so much for your email. It's only a pleasure - I am here to help. The Cape Town archives only holds records for the Cape Province. So if someone died in Durban then their records would be at the Pietermaritzburg Archives. If Henry was in the South African Army then you would need to contact Department of Defence Archives To obtain access to this information, the members written permission is required, or if he/she is deceased, that of his/her next-of-kin. You are thus requested to submit the following documentation in order for your enquiry to proceed: a). A certified copy of the requester’s identity document or passport. b). A signed letter of permission from the member, if passed away. c). A certified death certificate of member, if passed away It the member has passed away, a signed letter of permission must be obtained from a living blood relative including proof of the identification. The approximately 3 million personnel records in the Department of Defence Archives are indexed according to a specific convention. You are therefore requested to provide the Documentation Centre with as much detail as possible regarding the person you are seeking information on. The following are guidelines: a. Force number b. Date of assumption of military service c. Date of discharge from military service d. Regiment/unit where the person served e. Name and address of next-of-kin at the time of his attestation Upon receipt of the required documentation, the matter will receive further attention. This law now falls under the new Access to Information Act (Act 2 of 2000), certain restrictions have been placed upon the release of information to third parties. Obtaining Military Documents Address: Street: Documentation Centre of the SANDF Department of Defence Private Bag X289 PRETORIA 0001 Tel: +27 (012) 322 6350 Fax: +27 (011) 322 6360 Email here Contact: Miss Louise Jooste South African servicemen’s records from the Army, Navy and Air Force are held in these archives. Copies of service records can be obtained if a written application is made. Access: Accessibility is in accordance with the National Archives of South Africa Act (Act No. 43 of 1996) and in the case of classified documentation accessibility is subject to approval of the Chief of Defence Intelligence of the Department of Defence. Brief history: The Department of Defence Archives was established as the SA Defence Force (SADF) Archives on 14 May 1968 following the approval by the Minister of Education of a separate military archives. Prior to this date an organisation for the preservation of the archives of the SADF Archives and its predecessor, the Union Defence Force, did exist but it had no legal status. The SADF Archives had a twofold function, namely to preserve the military archives and to undertake military historical research and history writing. It was therefore decided to rename it the Military Historical and Archival Service (MHAS). In response to the SADF’s requirements, the MHAS gradually developed into a documentation service and this resulted in another change of the name in October 1972. The organisation then became known as the Central Documentation Service. Sweeping changes to the SADF in 1974 resulted in the reference library service, including the Central Library, being integrated into the Central Documentation Service. This led to a change in the status of the organisation. On 1 February 1975 it became a directorate and was designated the Documentation Service Directorate. In 1982 the directorate’s functions were augmented considerably when the SADF’s museums and ethnology service were added to it. Its function then comprised the preservation and management of records and archives; research and history writing; the reference library service; the museum service; and the ethnology service. The organisation was named the Military Information Bureau. Regrettably the Military Information Bureau was disestablished on 31 December 1986 and some of its functions were decentralized to the arms of service. Fortunately the nucleus, namely the SADF Archives and the Military History Section as well as the Central Library, was retained as the SADF Archives. Early in 1991 the SADF’s personnel records were added to the SADF Archives. This warranted the re-instatement of an organisation with directorate status and the SADF Archives became part of Documentation Service Directorate. Following the election in 1994, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) was established through the integration of the former statutory and non-statutory forces. On 1 April 1999 the name and status of this organisation was once again changed to bring the organisation in line with the transformation process, it is now known as the Documentation Centre. The Documentation Centre continued its functions and its archival service section, now known as t! he Department of Defence Archives, is still the official custodian of the documentation of the Department of Defence, the SANDF and its predecessors dating from 1912. Acquisitions policy: Documentation Centre (Department of Defence Archive) is the custodian of the archives of the Department of Defence/SANDF since its inception in 1912 as the Union Defence Force. All records of offices of the Department of Defence are transferred to the Department of Defence Archives when they are ten years old or older. Areas of specialisation: The Department of Defence Archives specializes in military history. It houses the official records of the Department of Defence as well as a collection of unique publications, unit history files, photographs, maps and pamphlets pertaining to the Department of Defence/SANDF and its predecessors dating from 1912. The Personnel Archives and Reserves (PAR) which also forms part of Documentation Centre, houses the personnel records of all former members of the SANDF and its predecessors. These personnel files are invaluable as a source for biographical details. Documentation Centre is also in possession of a collection of files pertaining to the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). It consists of applications by members of the South African Republican Forces during the 1920′s for the following medals: the “Dekoratie voor Trouwe Dienst Anglo-Boereoorlog”, the “De Zuidafrikaanse Republiek en Oranje Vrijstaat Oorlogsmedalje” and the “Lint voor Verwonding ! opgedaan gedurende de Anglo-Boereoorlog”. Core holdings: The Documentation Centre currently houses approximately two million files consisting of 1 607 different archival groups and approximately 250 680 personnel files. The most frequently consulted archival groups are as follows: Adjutant General. Chief of the General Staff. Commandant General. Director General Air Force. Divisional Documents. Naval Ships Logs. Chief of the Navy Ships Logs. Quartermaster General. Secretary for Defence. Union War Histories. Various War Diaries for the First and Second World Wars. Finding aids: The main finding aids used at Documentation Centre comprise of the List of Archives, inventories, indexes and a computer retrieval system. The List of Archives reflects the entire content of the repository. Information such as the name of the archival group, abbreviation, the extent of the group in terms of archive boxes, the location and security classification are provided. Inventories provide detailed information on the content of each archival group. The items are described individually according to the title of the file, the file reference, the dates and the box number. Card indexes are available for the book, manuscript and map collections. Approximately 120 000 documents are available on the computer retrieval system of which about 48 000 are photographs. This represents only a small portion of the total holdings. I have been posting messages all over South Africa in my attempt to trace dear old 'Uncle Henry', so please forgive me for bothering you again ! Would I be right in assuming that Henry and his wife Ethel must have had South African citizenship in order to adopt in the country? Sadly, I have no idea as to where the Fullers lived but, as Henry worked for Prices Candles,I had assumed that he lived near their offices at 84-86 Carr Strret, Newtown, Johannesburg. However, I have just found out that in 1909, Prices's Candles Ltd bought Burmeister Candle factory in Cape Town and that the land and the buildings were sold in 1923 and a new factory was built in Observatory. 3. Hi Gordon In the Cape Town National Archives you will find her estate papers DEPOT TAB SOURCE MHG TYPE LEER VOLUME_NO 0 SYSTEM 01 REFERENCE 3531/47 PART 1 DESCRIPTION STROBERG, JENNIE LOUISA. BORN OLANDER. STARTING 19470000 ENDING 19470000 REMARKS PREDECEASED SPOUSE JOHAN PETER STROBERG. As are new to genealogy in South Africa I suggest you download our free English beginners guide http://ancestry24.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/ancestry24BeginnersGuide_20090703_lowres.pdf and read about what documents are accessible in South Africa and which ones are not. Estate papers will include a will, liquidation and distribution account, death certificate and a death notice. Death notices as we know them today only came into existence in 1834 and sometimes it took several years until someone filled it in. However there were also death notices earlier than 1834 for slaves which appear in the deeds office as slaves were listed as property and not people. These early death notices can be found under the following references in the Cape Town Archives: KAB MOOC 6/1/ Vol 3 (year 1758 - 1796) KAB MOOC 6/2/ (year 1797 - 1821) KAB MOOC 6/3/ Volume 4 (year 1822 - 1833). KAB MOOC 6/9/ Volume 1 (year 1833 +) MHG Pretoria Archives MSCE A Death Notice is the official documentation handed to the Master of the High Court whose office has jurisdiction over the estate. It is used for informing the Master whether the deceased had assets, property or possessions to be passed on to heirs or claimants such as creditors, providing names of potential heirs, supplying the Master with details of where the deceased resided at the time of death and informing the Master whether the person reporting on the death is qualified to do so. Want to know more? The Death Notice contains fields for the following information: . Surname of deceased . Full first names . Identity number . Nationality . Age . Occupation . Ordinary place(s) of residence during the 12 months prior to death and the Province(s). . Date of birth . Place of birth . Date of death . Has the deceased left a will? . Marital status at time of death . If married, place where married . Full names of surviving spouse and his/her occupation . State whether marriage was in or out of community of property/whether accrual system is applicable . (a) Name(s) of predeceased spouse(s) and/or divorced spouse(s) (state opposite name of each whether predeceased or divorced) . (b) Date of death of predeceased spouse(s) . Master's office(s) where predeceased estate(s) is/are registered and number(s) of estate(s), if available. . Full names of children of deceased (state whether major or minor or predeceased and in the latter event, whether they left issue and, if that be the case, the full names of such issue) . Names of parents of deceased (state whether parents alive or deceased). o (a) Father o (b) Mother . Name and address of person signing the death notice. . Dated at ... the ... day . Signature ..... . Capacity...... One must bear in mind that when a person dies, the family is distraught and one of the members of the family will normally be the person filling in the Death Notice. Expect errors in the information given if: . child has died before his/her parents, the child may not always be listed. . the deceased has been married more than once - the first spouse is sometimes omitted . a neighbour or friend filled in the form, they would not necessarily know who the deceased's parents were, but sometimes guess. Sometimes the death notice states a female's surname as her maiden name (especially in Afrikaans families), even though she is married. People also tended to lie about their ages or sometimes do not know when and where they were born. Please remember that a death notice could either be perfect, semi-perfect or completely inaccurate and could send you on the wrong trail in tracing your ancestors. Make sure that you have other resources to complement and verify this information. d) Death Certificate A full death certificate can include the following information: . Christian Names and Surname of deceased . Name of parent or guardian is the deceased is under the age of ten years old . Sex . Age . Race . Birthplace . Personal Status . Occupation . Pensioner or dependent of pensioner . Date of death . Place of death . Usual place of residence . Intended place of burial . Causes of death . Duration of disease of last illness . Name of Medical Practitioner Informant . Signature or mark of . Qualification . 3. Hi Maria I had a look on Ancestry.co.uk and found James in the 1911 Census: Address 32 Greenmount Place, Beeston Hill, Leeds James Alfred Johnson 40 married 5 years Born Manchester Amelia Elizabeth 40 married 5 years Born Galoway Doreen Isobel 4 Born Cathcart Cape Colony S. Africa * occupation looks like controller? Employed in a sea merchant (fold on page and handwriting difficult to read) Birth: Dec q 1870 Salford 8d 10 - loads of churches in the area but not all had baptism records after 1837. I did check those on the Lancashire Parish Archives that did do it after 1837, but no record of James Albert. There are quite a couple of James A Johnsons born in Salford in the census records - so not sure which is the right one. 1871 Census - Pendleton (registration district Salford) William Johnson 29 miner born Salford Hannah Johnson 29 born Manchester William 6 born Pendleton Mary 4 born Pendleton Joseph 2 born Salford James A 7 months born Pendleton 1881 Census - Pendleton in Salford (12 Arthur Street) James Johnson 48 shoeing smith born Bishop Milton Mary 34 cotton weaver unemployed born Manchester James A 12 scholar born Salford John 11 scholar born Salford Isabella 3 born Pendleton Francis 2 months born Salford It is a pity your Johnsons aren't from North Meols, Southport, Lancashire as I have just finished copying the transcriptions from the archives site. So I have loads of information on hand. All my Johnsons are originally from there before they established themselves in Liverpool. Hope this helps. This makes me think they were married around 1904-5. James worked as a time keeper on the South African Railways and Amelia was in service. I believe they moved back to England before the war of 1911. I'm hoping to find their marriage certificate.  Can anyone help? 1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] H J SPOLANDER Clockmaker and Watchmaker
    2. Wally And Elrine Greig
    3. Henry Joseph SPOLANDER was a clockmaker and watchmaker in Cape Town, in the late 19th and 20th Centuries. He traded as H J Spolander. The first shop of his, that we are aware of, was on the corner of Greenmarket Square and Longmarket Street. At a later stage he moved to Mutual Building, which is bounded by Darling, Parliament and Longmarket streets. The Greenmarket Square premises can be seen in one of Arthur Elliott's photos. Elliott arrived in Cape Town in 1900 and died in 1938. Mutual Bulding opened in 1940. Spolander clocks are still in existence in Cape Town. Mabel Anni Spolander was either the daughter or niece of H J SPOLANDER. If anyone can add anything to the above,I would be pleased to hear from them. Thanks Wally Greig

    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] WALTERS ancestry (Ireland to Pietermarizburg, Natal, South Africa)
    2. Tara Norton
    3. Hello Fellow Listers Is anyone able to shed any light on the below paragraph below please? "Great Grandfather... Jack Norman Victor Walters came to S A Boer War 1899 1092 Innis Schillings Dragoons.... Irish . On mobilization of Innis Schillings Dragoons should be graded with Royal and Scots Greys... landed Queenstown 23 /24/ 25/ 1899 on SS Jamaican. SS Siberian...S S Persia...228 Officers ...558 on Commissioned Officers and Men 496 Horses..." My second great grandfather, John Charles WALTERS (aka Charlie), was born in unknown circa 1863/64. (His sons being Charles James Edward WALTERS - Pte, South African Medical Corps 1917/18; Pte, First South African Infantry Brigade 1918/1919; John WALTERS and Victor WALTERS). His younger brother, Norman WALTERS, was born in unknown circa 1865/66. (No sons to my knowledge & a daughter christened Methodist). Their younger/older brother, George Jack WALTERS, was born in unknown circa unknown. (His son was named after him). All the brothers' children were born in Pietermaritzburg, Natal from Feb 1899 to Mar 1917. We believe Jack Norman Victor WALTERS (born in unknown circa 1840) to be the father of the above-mentioned sons surely making him too old to have enlisted in the Boer War in 1899?
