As I live in East London my only avenue of searching is via the Internet which I have been doing for simply ages (NAAIRS, Ancestry24, Ancestry.co.za and just about every other site I can find), but have to date been unable to find any information as to when or where she died. Our Grandfather (Edwin Langford Ashley) died in 1928 in Pretoria and she is listed on his Death Notice as parent. She was about 69 years old at the time he died. We presume she died somewhere between 1928 and 1958 as her other son (Lewis Woodward Ashley) Death Notice states parents deceased. Both these sons resided in the Pretoria at the time of their death. We have tried Pretoria but have had no luck. I have been told we need to search for Estate Papers for her but the frustrating thing is that we have no dates to go on and do not know if she was still living in Pretoria when my Grandfather died or had gone back to Cape Town where her other children and all her immediate family lived. I don't know if anyone can assist me but any advice as to what avenue I should take to try and find this elusive Great Grandmother of ours would be greatly appreciated. Dear Heather and listers I am looking for some inspiration! I have a collection of photographs from 1924 to 1926 of a family living in Uitenhage that I would be pleased to share. My difficulty is that I do not have a family name, only a surname beginning with B! I do know they were sent by the mother of the family aged in her 30s called Rita B…..to a younger woman, Kathleen, whose home was in Stockport, Cheshire and who was born in Cape Town before coming to England in 1909 at the age of 3 so the family in Uitenhage may have migrated from Stockport for there to be affection between Rita and Kathleen. One picture mentions a cousin to three of the children so there were two linked families in Uitenhage. These are the family members, Rita B… Mother In her mid 30s Bunny Father Also in his mid 30s Buller Son (?) or possibly a nephew Late teens Leslie Son (?) or possibly a nephew Mid teens Dot Daughter and possible twin Aged 8 - 10 Pat Daughter and the 2nd possible twin Aged 8 - 10 Walter Son Aged about 5 Dorita Daughter Aged about 3 Guy Son (?) or possibly a nephew Aged about 18 months As the photographs were taken over two or three years the ages are approximate. One postcard showing panoramic views of “Uitenhage Cape Province” has the message “A general view of the town but I can scarcely point out where we live – The river winds all along the bottom of the hills in the background but one can scarcely see it in this.” This suggests their home was close to the Swartkops River. Any help would be much appreciated. Martin
Hi Derek I don't know where the Oudtshoorn records are at this stage. I am just grateful that the LDS has put these films online. Well done Gwyn! The Anglican Data seems well organised (as along as you know in which Diocese your town is) but the vague dates of the DRC records were very frustrating. I'm looking for marriages and baptisms in Oudtshoorn. There seems to be only 20th Century entries mark specifically Oudtshoorn - any suggestions where the 19th Century entries might be? George? Or are they not captured yet? HI Dorothea Depending when and where the person died will depend on whether or not the index is available or not. If he died in 1963 then his estate papers will be in the Master of the High Court in Cape Town. There is no index available for that year on the internet so one would have to go in personally or pay a private researcher. There are NO estate papers or death notices available to the public except the few that have been digitised by Ancestry24 and the Genealogical Society of South Africa and lately the Free State death notices at https://familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://familysearch.org/searchapi/search/collection/1407787 . Below are the contact details for the Master of the High Court but don't count on the phone even being answered - their response is not good at all.
