In the early 20th century, my grandfather, James Walsh, jumped ship in Table Bay. On 31 March 1901, he was part of the crew of the Jane McColl off the Welsh coast. The master was his father the well-known Thomas “Lanigan” Walsh of Wexford. He married my grandmother in Cape Town in 1905. Between these two dates, he arrived in Cape Town. Does anyone have any knowledge of the incident in Table Bay which would point me to the name of the ship on which he travelled? He was almost certainly part of the crew. Thank you Kevin Whyte

Dear Listers I believe the Louis GOLDSCHMIDT below to be my 3rd grandfather as I've been given a copy of the register of baptisms solemnized at St. Peter's Church, East London indicating that Louis was a constable when his first child, Susanna Jane, was born on 19/12/1858 as well as when his seventh child, my 2nd great grandfather, Henry Charles, was born on 08/04/1870. I believe the sponsors - William, Jane & Eliza GAFFNEY - to be the siblings/family of my 3rd great grandmother, Jane GAFFNEY, who were aboard 'The Vocalist' in Jan 1859 per Esme BULL's book 'Aided Immigration from Britain to South Africa 1857 - 1867'. Louis married Jane soon after she disembarked The Lady Kennaway. Does anyone have access to the below-mentioned book who could possibly do a look-up for me please? Hi Trisha Thanks so much for your reply - yes she did but she after she got a judicial separation (we have the documents) she obviously changed her surname and the two boys born out of this marriage namely Edwin Langford and Lewis Woodward (both Baptised Coomber) back to Ashley. Both boys death certificates state surname Ashley. On my Grandfathers death certificate it states Parents: Jane Maria Ashley (born Shearer) Widow. As I live in East London my only avenue of searching is via the Internet which I have been doing for simply ages (NAAIRS, Ancestry24, Ancestry.co.za and just about every other site I can find), but have to date been unable to find any information as to when or where she died. Our Grandfather (Edwin Langford Ashley) died in 1928 in Pretoria and she is listed on his Death Notice as parent. She was about 69 years old at the time he died. We presume she died somewhere between 1928 and 1958 as her other son (Lewis Woodward Ashley) Death Notice states parents deceased. Both these sons resided in the Pretoria at the time of their death. We have tried Pretoria but have had no luck. I have been told we need to search for Estate Papers for her but the frustrating thing is that we have no dates to go on and do not know if she was still living in Pretoria when my Grandfather died or had gone back to Cape Town where her other children and all her immediate family lived. I don't know if anyone can assist me but any advice as to what avenue I should take to try and find this elusive Great Grandmother of ours would be greatly appreciated.
