Hi I was wondering if any one can help??? where can I find old wedding certs from the early 1900"s ( !905/1906)Anglican church in the Maclear Ugie area?? Thanks Merle Grant
I don't know where you would find a gov't document. I knew the denomination of my ancestors and looked up several churches of that denomination online and emailed them. I got lucky and found the church their family went to and the church emailed me a copy of the entry they had for the wedding. They also looked up other family members and either sent me transcriptions of the entries or emailed me copies of the actual entries. Good luck! Hello All, I was hoping that someone out there may have some information as to what happened to the Hepburn & Jeanes Studio in Grahamstown, as I have a number of old family photo's that were taken by this studio & I would love to get my hands on the negatives, or to find out if I am missing any photo's in a series. I googled the company, & apparently they were still going until fairly recently & they retained all of there negatives. Surely when they closed the negatives wouldn't have just been discarded, I am hoping that they were perhaps donated to a museum & archived (fingers crossed). If anyone could help out with any info, I would be most grateful. Thank you in anticipation. Lauren

Hi Coral and Neville Thanks for your responses. Kevin
Hi Tara >From the correspondence you look like you might like a good mystery. The South African piece of my mystery is defeating me as I've not found anything to help with the solution as yet. Its like a 100 piece jigsaw with 50 pieces missing. As far as I can tell, two young lads (Percy & Walter) from Todmorden in West Yorkshire had a family catastrophe. Their father John Hargreaves attempted suicide in 1892. Their mother also attempted suicide in December 1893, and succeeded. I think the the two lads must have joined the Army and emigrated to South Africa (or vice versa) but records for these events have so far eluded me. What I do know for sure is Percy Hargreaves married circa 1905 and had 3 children; Hilda Priscilla 1909, Constance (Connie) 1911 and Walter ? Hilda married Ivan Gerwald Jurgensen abt 1927 and this line is OK. Following your advice re the newspaper archive etc I pieced together enough info on the Jurgensens but the Hargreaves remain a mystery. Because of the events in Yorkshire I suspect the two boys didn't reveal much and kept their heads down, as it were, leaving their grandchildren with a black hole in their family history. The family have a large collection of medals which are helping a little. For example "168 TPR P Hargreaves SA Lt Horse; Cape Colony, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Belfast and South africa 1901". Can you fill in any gaps do you think? There may be lots of descendants out there that might recognise some of the above? Kevin Hi1 There were 2 ships with that name but the one was wrecked prior to 1900 so can't be the one the other one is listed as follows in the ships register as. Jane McColl a schooner of 87 tons; built in Rothesay in 1868; regd. Glasgow ; owned by John Gilmore of Killyleagh in 1887; in 1922 registered in Dublin & owned out of Wicklow when wrecked 28 Apr 1924 Sailors frequently jumped ship in those days were hardly given a mention in newspapers etc. and as one could easily be absorbed into the local population tracing details is very difficult. My own GGF was shipwrecked in Algoa Bay (Port Elizabeth) the newspaper reported the stranding of the ship but there is no record anywhere of who the crew were. I found him listed as a shop owner on the diamond diggings in Kimberly several years later. Dear Fellow Listers, Is anyone in the Cape area researching the Turner family? I am looking for JAMES FREDERICK TURNER who was born 1878 in Chelsea London England. He arrived in Simonstown with his widower father CHARLES EDWARD TURNER born 1855 and his sister my gr grandmother EMILY FRANCES born 1880 sometime after 1889 when their mother MARY ELIZABETH nee HONEYBALL died in London and 1902 when he shows as a witness to a baptism at St Francis church in Simonstown. I am also looking for any HONEYBALL(this spelling is used in all my records found in england) I have one Edith Honeyball in simonstown so am guessing the families came out to the Cape either together or to join other family members. Both the Turners and the Honeyball family were furniture upholsterers employing workers in the english census's but Charles shows as a plumber on his death notice. Thanking you all in anticipation. Sharon. also researching Lotter/Lotters and Springhall and particulary the surname FRANCIS.
