    3. Hi Maureen & Heather The renewal of licences for bakers, hotels, butchers etc comes up quite often in the Government Gazette - it seems that it was an ongoing thing and all the districts had to reapply. A really great source of information if you are willing to trawl throught the weekly Gazette. All the other stuff in it is fascinating too. Cheers for now Sharon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maureen Brady" <mbrady@telkomsa.net> To: <SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 04, 2004 8:15 PM Subject: [South-Africa-Cape-Town] Randalls Hotel, Rondebosch, FARRELL > Hi Listers > > I've recently uncovered a whole family of FARRELLs who almost all have > "Hotel Proprietor" on their Death Notices, on one of which is noted Randalls > Hotel, Rondebosch, so I presume this may have been the name of their family > hotel > (but not necessarily). 3. Hi All, You have encouraged me out of lurkdom Heather. My grandmother, Rosalia WERNER arrived in Cape Town on the Godeffroy in 1877 aged 2 and I would very much like to find the marriages etc. of her siblings and possibly trace relatives. The ship entry I have is : "WERNER, Johann Jacob, farmer (36 years old) from Caneau in Russia, with this wife Catherina Dorothea (35), and Marie Catherina (15), Amelie (10), Johannes (7), Jacob (5) Rosalie (2), Johann Friedrich (younger than 1) on the Godeffroy in 1877. Another son, Christian, was born in South Africa. He is the only one of the siblings that I knew. Rosalie married Jan Geerts MINNEMA around 1894 probably in the German Evangelical Lutheran Church where their first child was baptised (is St Martin's ? in Long St ? if memories of 50 years ago serve me). Anna Katharina Caroline Minnema Born 23. Februar 1895 Bapt 7 April 1895 St Martini Kirche Pastor GW Wagener Johann Minnema und Rosalie geb. Werner Sponsors : Konrad Binedell, Karoline Werner, Catharina Schwerdt and Christian Werner. (Record details from the certificate in her late daughter's possession.) I used to grill my much older cousin, Anna's daughter, and amongst the family lore I gleaned was that they had come out to the Cape on some sort of farm settlement scheme and that Rosalie's sisters married brothers named LANGE. I remember visiting some cousins in Rhodesia and Johannesburg as a child but don't remember names. I would greatly appreciate any help and learning how I can find further information; also what methods of payment are accepted. Best regards........ 3. Hello Maureen What an interesting story - only last week I came across a list of persons being given "licences" to sell liquor at establishments in the Southern Suburbs - this appeared in the 1870 Government Gazette but I cannot remember which week it was. There is a James Farrell who also appears in Family Register of the South African Nation who arrived in 1820 from Ireland and married on 28/1/1821 to Sara Eilh. Craayenstein van die Kaap in Cape Town. She died on 26/12/1831 aged 52 years 7 months and 29 days. He then married Susanna Louisa HERTZOG in Wynberg on 7/8/1837. then FARRELL, William Joseph Henry born 27/11/1873 in Simonstown son of J.W. Farrell of Kenilworth. He married in 1908 to Maggie daughter of P.T.R. SCHABORT from Pretoria. There are 8 pages of FARRELL in SA Genealogies. hope this helps Heather Heather's South African Genealogy Help List www.genealogy.co.za Scribes Ink. 3. BlankHeather I have been trying all day to send this to the List, without success. Is it down for updating? If it is just a gleek on my machine, could I ask you to put this on the List for me? Sorry to be a nuisance... Go well! Ivy. Hi - I found a STEPHEN PRIDAY on the LDS, submitted by TERESA MADELINE TEEAR. If Teresa is on this List, or known to other members, I would like to hear from her as I have a PRIDAY connection. Thank you, and go well! 1. Randalls Hotel, Rondebosch, FARRELL
    2. Maureen Brady
    3. Hi Listers I've recently uncovered a whole family of FARRELLs who almost all have "Hotel Proprietor" on their Death Notices, on one of which is noted Randalls Hotel, Rondebosch, so I presume this may have been the name of their family hotel (but not necessarily). Any further info would be greatly appreciated. The parents were James FARRELL and Ann (born BRADY). This James seems to be the same James F listed under the Children's Friend Society in Esme Bull's book as: Farrell, James: apprenticed to DJ van der Merwe, Wellington, absconded ("Zuid-Afrikaan", 18.11.1842). His Death Notice (#873 filed 25 September 1874) doesn't give details about birthplace or parents but as he died age 45, this 'orphan' status plus his age are consistent, if he was about 13 in 1842. He died at his residence in Papendorp (near the mouth of the Olifants River a few hundred miles north up the West Coast) on 13 August 1868. His wife survived him by 29 years. She died in 1897 (DN 3185), which states she was born in Co Clare, Ireland, but no details of parents are given. Although she was illiterate (signed James's DN with a cross) she managed to leave "Landed property and furniture" when she died -- what's more, the DN clearly states she held this property in her own name. I've never seen this on a DN before, a note for the Executors of the pre-deceased testator -- "No property or effects were accumulated in the lifetime of the late James Farrell. All properties are registered in the name of the deceased". Not bad for an illiterate Irish lass who probably started from the lowest of scratch, is it? Ann Farrell died at her own home at No 2 -- and this is where the first problem sets in because the handwriting on the DN is almost illegible -- Celeplon? Celepton? Elepton? Street [no suburb given], Cape Town. This name rings no bells in my old CT head, and the word itself makes no sense. ***LATER: got it! after analysing the handwriting against other individual letter formations on the DN ... CLIFTON Street -- but there are FIVE (Roads, not Streets) in CT: Claremont, Clifton, Mowbray, Muizenberg, Wynberg On the father's DN, the children are listed as: Anne (must have predeceased her mother or died young) Margaret James ?Mary John Ellen Bridget (predeceased her mother in 1893) Michael On the mother's DN, they are: Margarent MACON (later DOYLE) James Mary GREEN John Ellen VAS Michael For the children, I have found the following three DNs: James (#3125) 1901, retired, unmarried, died at Randalls Hotel, Rondebosch Bridget (#694) 1893, hotel proprietor, unmarried, died at Muizenberg Michael (#2799) 1912, hotel proprietor, married Henrietta CHRISTIANI (sounds Italian), died at 'Kelso', Kenilworth (another interesting clue) four children, all minors: Susan Doris Hilda Ann Michael Dudley Horace Stephen Also one for Margaret DOYLE who signed her sister Bridget's DN. Margaret died 1910, possibly abandoned by her still-living spouse, alone in the Old Somerset Hospital, because her DN seems to be signed by a surgeon. There's a coherent family story locked up in these bare facts. References from street directories, voters rolls, contemporary newspapers anyone might have access to will be very welcome -- even more so would be discovering someone with these people in their more immediate tree -- I think we could usefully trade branches and stories. The FARRELLs may have had close links with the Eastern Cape. in the 1850s. Regards Maureen Brady Johannesburg

    2. Heather MacAlister
    3. Hello I thought I was quiet ? but your genies are even quieter ?? Can anyone tell me where the larger Dutch reformed or Lutheran cemeteries were situated in Cape Town central around 1867 ? I am searching for a burial of someone who was catholic and then had a fall out with the priest. I have checked existing records of St. Georges burials grounds in Somerset Road plus the larger cemetery there as well and nothing came up. thanks Heather Heather's South African Genealogy Help List www.genealogy.co.za The 1902 Municipal Voters Roll of Cape Town - Districts 1 to 6 The 1878 Voters Roll for the Cape is now available with tens of thousands on names !!! 1805, 1829, 1835 and 1849 Cape Almanacs now on CD The Juta's Directory of 1900 which lists residents of Cape Town from the City Bowl until Simonstown.
