Hello Eileen The best place to start is the National Archives. You can search for documents references on-line at www.national.archives.gov.za you will however only be given some references numbers and a brief description of the document. You will either have to ask someone nicely on the mailing list or contact the archives directly. I did find a death notice for Eduardo - this death notice might give insight to his parentage and his descendants. Hello everyone, I am trying to trace the origins of Eduardo Augusto DE CARVALHO. I believe that he was born around 1835 in Lisbon and eventually became 1st Portuguese Consul in the Cape of Good Hope in 1881. If anyone knows anything about this family or could give me any pointers on how to proceed, I would love to hear from you. Eileen Flinn Nottingham, England

Hello Maureen This was my reply to your original email Hi Maureen Don't have a problem you sending any info to the mailing list as long as it does not become an "1820 settler list" Which Clifton Street are you looking for one in Rondebosch? There is a Clifton Road in Claremont, Clifton Road in Clifton, Clifton Rd in Mowbray (close to Rondebosch), Muizenberg, Tamboerskloof, District Six and Observatory There was a C. Randall living at 42 Fenton Road Salt River in 1900 and E.G. Randall living at Eureka Road Rondebosch. There was also a Dr. A.G.W. Farrell who lived at 1 Reform Rd Rondebosch. Reform Rd is about two hundred metres behind the main road in the vicinity of Westerford High School. Hope this helps kind regards Heather ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maureen Brady" <mbrady@telkomsa.net> To: <SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 10, 2004 3:35 PM Subject: Re: [South-Africa-Cape-Town] Randalls Hotel, Rondebosch, FARRELL > Hi Heather > > No, nothing's come through (but this one came through twice), unless it's > the one you sent yesterday asking about which Clifton Street it might be, > plus some Randall and Farrell details (I did reply to that, though). Hi Heather No, nothing's come through (but this one came through twice), unless it's the one you sent yesterday asking about which Clifton Street it might be, plus some Randall and Farrell details (I did reply to that, though). Please send it again if it is not the same message. So Randall's Hotel was still extant in the late 1960s -- that's interesting. Should make it easier to find other references to it. I've never delved into property records -- does anyone have any advice on how to go about this for Cape Town? Bearing in mind I live about 1000km north. Thanks Maureen Brady Johannesburg ----- Original Message ----- From: "Heather MacAlister" <heather@genealogy.co.za> To: <SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 10, 2004 12:35 PM Subject: Re: [South-Africa-Cape-Town] Randalls Hotel, Rondebosch, FARRELL > Hello Maureen > Did you get the email I sent to the list with the info on the Farrell's and > Randall's Hotels etc as it seems to have got lost in space. Hello Maureen Did you get the email I sent to the list with the info on the Farrell's and Randall's Hotels etc as it seems to have got lost in space. I have an old 1967 Cape Times Street Directory with Randall's Hotel Listed. Yes I have noticed well into the 1870's the unclaimed letters held at the post office in Cape Town - they were very efficient in those days kind regards Heather ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maureen Brady" <mbrady@telkomsa.net> To: <SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 09, 2004 4:20 PM Subject: Re: [South-Africa-Cape-Town] Randalls Hotel, Rondebosch, FARRELL > Hi Sharon > > I don't think I've replied to this, sorry. Hi Sharon I don't think I've replied to this, sorry. Thanks a lot, but I live in Jo'burg and it's going to be quite a while before I can visit the CT Archives again. The last time I was there, I went through several volumes of Gazettes, and quite agree they're full of fascinating info. Something that really intrigued me (in a volume for the 1860s) was how they listed the addressees of all the letters that had arrived at the Post Office each week -- can you imagine if that had to be done now?! I guess these were letters addressed to Poste Restante, Cape Town, probably mainly letters from overseas, where the sender had lost touch with someone and didn't know the street address of the person they were writing to, or even whether they were still in CT. I presume that, if Mrs A in Claremont was writing to her friend Mrs B in Rondebosch to invite her to dinner, the letter would have been addressed to, and delivered to, Mrs B's street address, so no need to publish this in the Gazettes. With Randalls Hotel, I was hoping someone has access to old street or commercial directories for CT that might list the hotel or even feature an advertisement. I've never seen one of these, so don't know whether they included ads. The other alternative is to search through the newspaper archives, but that will also have to wait until I can visit CT again. Hi Maureen Don't have a problem you sending any info to the mailing list as long as it does not become an "1820 settler list" Which Clifton Street are you looking for one in Rondebosch? There is a Clifton Road in Claremont, Clifton Road in Clifton, Clifton Rd in Mowbray (close to Rondebosch), Muizenberg, Tamboerskloof, District Six and Observatory There was a C. Randall living at 42 Fenton Road Salt River in 1900 and E.G. Randall living at Eureka Road Rondebosch. There was also a Dr. A.G.W. Farrell who lived at 1 Reform Rd Rondebosch. Reform Rd is about two hundred metres behind the main road in the vicinity of Westerford High School. Hope this helps kind regards Heather Heather's South African Genealogy Help List www.genealogy.co.za Scribes Ink. Hi Becky I was starting to give up on getting any reply to this enquiry...! I know this List is about CT, but I do have tantalising clues that there may have been close CT-Eastern Cape links between these families. Also, I've just recently read some of a book called "The Cape Parliament" (which has chosen this moment to hide itself!! so I can't give you full details) We cannot divorce the history of Cape Town and the Eastern Cape between 1820 and -- when? -- I can't think of the date when the Cape moved from "responsible government" to "self-government". In fact, I'm sure this close relationship persisted up to the creation of Union in 1910. After the creation of the Cape Legislature, the Eastern Cape representatives had to spend considerable time in Cape Town whenever Parliament was sitting. Therefore, we should not seek to draw artificial boundaries between areas of our research. The Cape Town Archives are, after all, the repository for the entire province. Weird, I didn't get Heather's earlier message via the List at all, but that might have more to do with the teething problems I'm having with a new PC than the List. Thanks, Heather, I have the CRAAYENSTEIN info, didn't know about HERTZOG, though. I've checked the FARRELL pages in SAG, but can't see any of the people I'm looking for, despite having found several related DNs. I think the SAG pedigrees are all unrelated branches, but only time will tell whether any of them connect to mine. What I'd really like is some help in finding the historical location of Randalls Hotel in Rondebosch, also to resolve WHICH Clifton Street it might have been -- I don't have historical maps for that part of Cape Town. Info about liquour licences would also be great, but no pressure, anyone -- it IS the Easter long weekend, after all... Hi Heather At UPE they have condensed Government Gazettes for 1846 pertaining to liquor licences. I looked through this briefly on my last visit to the library, but didn't make any notes. I'm not very sure about this, but I vaguely recall mention of the Albany district, which of course, would not be applicable to your mailing list as it only deals with Cape Town and the surrounds. However, I can have a look at this again should there be any interest. I cannot promise when this look-up can be done as UPE is very far from home and my visits are limited to twice a month. Hello Faye There was a Julius Wocke who arrived before 1886 as a chemist from Germany listed in The Family Register of the South African Nation but nothing else said. I then did a quick look on NAAIRS (192 documents) and was amazed how many of this family there were around including a Clara Wocke who married into the well known JANISCH family. Good luck and let me know the first names that you are researching kind regards Heather Heather's South African Genealogy Help List www.genealogy.co.za Scribes Ink.
