    1. Re: Lost Relatives in England Part 1
    2. Heather MacAlister
    3. Hello Ann Marie Around the time of the 1881 census was the tail end of the 2nd Industrial Revolution these were some of the aspects which changed peoples lives and made them immigrate. a.. the growth of cities and other population shifts b.. working conditions for men, women or children c.. changing role of women d.. impact of inventions on life e.. living conditions in the cities and in the countryside f.. health and sanitation g.. education h.. housing i.. income and wealth accumulation j.. role of labour unions k.. changes in family life l.. transportation m.. leisure Bearing in mind the largest number of people immigrated to South Africa ever at one time was between 1856 and 1873 when 22, 332 immigrants came from England. Most of them came to work on the expanding harbours and extensive railways systems. From 1870 onwards emigration to the colony peaked following the discovery of gold and diamonds. Some settlers sailed from Liverpool to South Africa Between 1830 and 1930 over nine million emigrants sailed from Liverpool bound for a new life in the New World of the United States, Canada and Australia and South Africa. For much of this period Liverpool was by far the most important port of departure for emigrants from Europe largely because by 1830, she already had well established trans-Atlantic links essentially in the import of cotton and timber. Liverpool was also well placed to receive the many emigrants from the countries of North Western Europe. Irish emigrants first crossed to Liverpool by steamship, while Scandinavians and Russians/Poles crossed the North Sea to Hull and travelled to Liverpool by train. Liverpool's share of the emigrant trade began to decline from the late nineteenth century as emigrants increasingly came from the countries of southern and eastern Europe. Some passed through Liverpool, but more sailed from the nearer German and Italian ports. There were three main motives for emigration. Some of the emigrants were fleeing from the hardships of poverty and unemployment; this was particularly applicable to the 1,250,000 Irish who emigrated between 1845 and 1851 as a result of the potato famine. For Russian and Polish Jews, emigration was a way of escaping from political and religious persecution. Other emigrants were not suffering the hardships of poverty or the terror of persecution, but were attracted by the possibility of a higher standard of living. Most emigrants usually spent between one and ten days waiting for their ship in a Liverpool lodging house. In the mid-nineteenth century emigrants passing through Liverpool were liable to harassment and fraud by local confidence tricksters, who became known as 'runners'. Runners frequently snatched the emigrants' luggage and would only return it if the emigrant paid a large fee. In the late 1840's and 1850's, lodging houses were often inhospitable, dirty and overcrowded. Until the early 1860's most emigrants left Liverpool on a sailing ship, and the voyage to Australia would take about 3- 4 months. Most emigrants travelled in the cheapest class of accommodation, known as the steerage. This was similar to a dormitory with bunks down the sides and tables in the centre. It was frequently overcrowded with poor ventilation. Emigrating in a sailing ship could be unpleasant, particularly during a storm; it was only better in degree in the early days of steamships! Diseases such as cholera and typhus frequently reached epidemic proportion as infection spread through the confined decks. Scores of emigrants died on this account. The 1855 Passenger Act helped to improve conditions, laying down minimum standards for rations, space and sanitation. From the 1860's the situation began to improve as steam started to replace sail, and the steamship companies started to look after emigrants during their stay in Liverpool, with their representatives meeting the emigrants on arrival in Liverpool. The emigrants were taken to lodging houses which were frequently owned by the steamship companies, but delays still occurred and there continued to be complaints about treatment in Liverpool even in the early 20th century. By 1870 virtually all emigrants went by steamship. Competition between the steamship companies helped, to some extent, to improve conditions for the emigrants. From about 1900 third class cabins began to replace the steerage accommodation. Accommodation was still spartan, but it was a considerable improvement. 1. CROCKETTS, St Judes parish, Oudtshoon
    2. Peter Forrest
    3. Hi Everyone First a big thank you particularly to Heather MacAlister for introducing me to the National Archives. They have already helped me with find several bits of missing information. I wonder if you could help me with the following: I have a photocopy of part of the baptism certificate for my grand mother CONSTANCE ADA CROCKETT. Unfortunately part is torn off so I don't know what is missing. What is on it is as follows: Day of birth: (only partially distinguishable) 21 January 1887, Parents: Rowland Henry Vaughton Crockett & Helen Abode: Oudtshoon Profession (of father): artist Sponsors: Peter ?--- Blant, Fanny Blant, Ada Soulby Ceremony performed by: Percy E. H. Hilyard, assistant curate. ' ....a true extract from the register of baptisms of St Jude's Church, Oudtshoon, Cape of Good Hope.' Signed: Alfred Morris, Rector My first question is - where is Oudtshoon and does St Jude's still exist? Secondly is the Baptism register available for look ups? The reason I am asking is that I believe that 2 of Constance's brothers were born in South Africa as I have not been able to find them in the UK. They are ROWLAND GEORGE CROKETT born possibly 21 May 1881 FRANCIS REGINALD CROCKETT born about 1883, died an infant. I now know that their father ROWLAND HENRY VAUGHTON CROCKETT died in 1903 in the Cape Town area thanks to the National Archives. I was wondering if there might be a burial record in St Judes. I would be grateful for any suggestions on how to follow this up. many thanks Peter Forrest Newcastle upon Tyne. UK

    3. Dear Heather, This is very interesting -I used to live in Northampton and live in Bedford now so I wonder what the attraction was for ex SA's -certainly isnt the weather ;o)) Ann Marie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Heather MacAlister" <heather@ancestors.co.za> To: <SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 02, 2004 4:15 PM Subject: Lost Relatives in England Part 1 > Afternoon all > > Here is a list of people living in East Anglia in the 1881 British Census who were born in South Africa. > > It is interesting to see how many of these folk had one child born in South African then they went back to the UK and had a couple more there, then came back to SA and had another one here and then went back again to England !!! > > I am lucky enough to have the use of a very powerful program that enables me to search for "any word" in the 1881 census. > For those of you who have used the Census you will realise how utterly frustrating it is especially when you know that you relative lived there and cannot find them. > > I can search for string's or words with virtually any combination what so ever eg: "and + or + with + near + not " etc etc. > > Hopefully one day I will manage to sift out all those people like one below who was born in "Kimbali" - yes you would never find it on the Census as I can search for just the word "Cape" and then I can sort them and see where the error in places are. 1. Lost Relatives in England Part 1
    2. Heather MacAlister
    3. Afternoon all Here is a list of people living in East Anglia in the 1881 British Census who were born in South Africa. So I am really going to have some fun and hope I can find my lost great grandmother who was having a baby at that time but was no where to be found. Hope you find that illusive relative - cheers Heather Dwelling: 19 Princess St Census Place: Northampton St Sepulchre, Northampton, England Source: FHL Film 1341373 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1546 Folio 84 Page 41 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Wm.Thos. 1. RE: [South-Africa-Cape-Town] GARDINER
    2. Gardiner, John (J.S.)
    3. Hello everyone, This is my first posting to the list. My name is JOHN GARDINER and I'm trying to find out more about my great, great grandfather, THOMAS GARDINER, and his family and descendants. This is perhaps a slightly unusual genealogical enquiry as Thomas actually emigrated from rather than to South Africa. Thomas Gardiner is believed to have been born in the Cape in 1857 (according to the UK Census of 1901 he was 44). Thomas seems to have arrived in the UK sometime in the late 19th Century from South Africa, and most probably the Cape, and started a fruit and veg business with shops in Southwark, London and Portsmouth importing produce from the Cape, presumably from family or past associates. I have a photograph of Thomas and some of his children who were born in London (including my great-grandmother). Though Thomas married an English / Irish lady and looks "colonial" if you'll kindly forgive the expression, his children do appear to have some Cape Malay or Coloured facial features and skin tone. Thomas died in London in 1927 There's also a connection to WALTER GARDINER of St Helena who seems to have been born in Cape Town in 1895, possibly to a HENRY GARDINER(?) and a mother whose surname was SCOTT. Walter's mother died giving birth to him and he was subsequently sent to St Helena to live with his maternal grandfather. I have managed to trace Walter's surviving grandson, MALCOLM GARDINER, a Saint who know lives in the UK. Interestingly, one of Thomas's daughters, LOUISA GARDINER, (my great-grandmother's sister) is believed to have left London to marry Walter who was supposedly her second cousin. Therefore, we assume there must be some connection emanating from their South African roots between Thomas and Walter. Any information on Thomas, Walter or any other Gardiner family link in the Cape region would be very much welcome. Many thanks and kind regards to you all. While I have been reasonably successful in tracing the family in England I am at a loss as to how to go about it in South Africa! The CROCKETTs originated from Staffordshire, England. The first family to emigrate was: 1 EDWARD CHARLES CROCKETT 1823 - 1874 b: 21 Jun 1823 in Shushions, Staffordshire Baptism: 16 Jul 1823 St Editha's Parish Church, Church Eaton, Staffordshire d: 14 Dec 1874 in Cape Town, South Africa .. +Susanna Maria Gird Unknown - 1870 b: Unknown m: Unknown d: 1870 in Cape Town, South Africa ...... 2 Frederick Crockett Unknown - b: Unknown ...... 2 Katherine Crockett Unknown - b: Unknown ...... 2 Emily Crockett 1865 - Unknown b: Abt. 1865 in Mossel Bay, South Africa d: Unknown ...... 2 George Crockett Unknown - Unknown b: Unknown d: Unknown Edward Charles Crockett is believed to have been a civil commissioner and a collector of Taxes for Mossel Bay, Cape Colony (is that politically correct these days?) 2. Peter Forrest
    3. Hi Everyone This is my first e-mail to your lists. My name is Peter Forrest and I live in England. I am trying to trace 2 branches of my CROCKETT ancestors who emigrated to South Africa in the 19th century. 2 George Crockett Unknown - Unknown b: Unknown d: Unknown Edward Charles Crockett is believed to have been a civil commissioner and a collector of Taxes for Mossel Bay, Cape Colony (is that politically correct these days?) The second family emigrated in about 1880 and settled in Durban. They were: 1 HENRY LAWRENCE CROCKETT 1878 - 1964 b: 08 Jan 1878 in Brockingham Green, Surrey d: 22 Jan 1964 in Durban, South Africa, aged 86 Burial: Abt. Jan 1964 St Thomas' Cemetery, Durban, Natal, South Africa .. +Florence Mary Mason 1882 - 1969 b: Bet. 3. Hi Jim Your query regarding Strand Street - yes it still exists and it is in the heart of the Cape Town CBD - so mostly business premises now - I am not sure whether there are any residential buildings in Strand Street at all. The Cape Almanacs (Scribes Publishing - http://www.sagenealogy.co.za/Scribes.htm ) are an incredible source of information and give one a good idea of the social context in which our ancestors lived - Strand Street in the 1800's was, as is indicated by its name, very close to the sea but there were many houses and businesses there - some of the houses still exist but as museums (Koopmans De Wet House and Martin Melck House spring to mind) Regards Sharon View 1800s SOUTH AFRICAN PASSENGER LISTS at http://www.sagenealogy.co.za/DataArchive.htm SCRIBES PUBLISHING for Colonial Books on CD - visit http://www.sagenealogy.co.za/Scribes.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Westell" <jwestell@netrover.com> To: <SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 23, 2004 4:56 AM Subject: [South-Africa-Cape-Town] George Paton > Heather & Dunia: Thank you for the information and the offer of assistance. 3. Hello Dunia Thanks very much for the reply. Sorry Somerset Road Cemetery has been gone since I arrived on this planet and that is almost half a century ago. I have the plot numbers somewhere but if you can remind me next will I will have a look as I am going away. With reference to Peter Philips book his references at the back correspond to documents in the Cape Town Archives. You can search the National Archives web site at www.national.archives.gov.za but many thousands of documents are not indexed on their site but are in hard copy inventories. Can view or order any documents on this web site but will only be given a brief description. You will then either have to write to the archives or pay a private researcher. Strand Street is no longer a residential Street and has not been for probably more than half a century. The very section of a few small blocks however do have some residential homes. Strand Street is one of the main thoroughfare roads of the city centre of Cape Town and companies are starting to turn the top floors of the buildings in to very expensive apartments - stunning place to live. The Cape Town Archives and the National Library in Cape Town are just some of the places to go to. kind regards Heather kind regards Heather Heather's South African Genealogy Help List at www.genealogy.co.za will be moving on 19th September to www.familytree.co.za Join the Cape Town Family History Society www.ancestors.co.za/society/socweb.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Westell" <jwestell@netrover.com> To: <SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 23, 2004 4:56 AM Subject: [South-Africa-Cape-Town] George Paton Heather & Dunia: Thank you for the information and the offer of assistance. 3. Hello Jim George Paton was born in Scotland and married in Cape Town on 27/11/1819 to Magdalena Johanna Preiss (sic) - she was baptised on 4/8/1793 and was the daughter of F Preiss.(sic) Death notices can be searched for on the National Archives web site at www.national.archives.gov.za - you will however only be given a brief description of the document and will not be able to view it or order it over the internet. You will either have to contact the archives directly or pay a researcher. Marriage records, unless you know exactly which church they were married in, is a bit more difficult. Marriage registers are housed in the National records as well as different parish records but not all. There is no official civil registration list in South Africa which can be consulted via the internet. The main older cemeteries around Cape Town are long gone but records are still around. I found these cemetery recordings for you: George Ponty PATON died on 15 Feb 1827. George was buried in Somerset Road Cemetery,Cape Town,District Cape,Western Cape, Rsa. George Ponty Paton. Died 15-02-1827. Aged 3 months and 22 days. Son of George Paton and MJC Prys. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mjc PRYS died on 27 Oct 1828. Mjc was buried in Somerset Road Cemetery,Cape Town,District Cape,Western Cape, Rsa. MJC Paton, nee Prys. Died 27-10-1828. Aged 35 years, 1 month and 27 days. Wife of Lt. George Paton. (See Peter Philip: British Residents at the Cape). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Martha Elizabeth PATON died on 31 Jan 1825. Martha was buried in Somerset Road Cemetery,Cape Town,District Cape,Western Cape, Rsa. Martha Elizabeth Paton. Died 31-01-1825. Aged 1 year, 3 months and 11 days. I am going to be in Cape Town at the end of October and would like to verify the above and obtain further information if possible. How would I go about checking the marriage, births and deaths - through civil registration or parish records? Are any of the early records indexed and/or transcribed? What cemeteries would have been in use in the 1820's? Any information that would assist me as I have limited time would be appreciated. 1. [South-Africa-Cape-Town] Restrictions on Digital Cameras at Archives???

    3. Hello All on the List Below is a X-Posting from the SOUTH AFRICA IMMIGRANTS LIST which I am passing on with the permission of Dennis Pretorius - might clear up the situation regarding the digital cameras - regards Sharon Warr Hallo Delia I had contact with Lerita Pretorius at the National Archives in Pretoria and there appears to be no threat of "outlawing" of Digital Cameras. The National Archives will be embarking on a campaign to preserve documents and one of the actions will be to "outlaw" the use of photocopy machines by visitors to the Archives Repository. Trained officials will make copies on request - but this will result in a time delay. Requested documents will probably only be mailed to the requesters a few days later. Handheld scanners will be "outlawed" - with no exceptions Pens will be "outlawed" - only pencils The General Rule will be NO CAMERAS - however permission may be granted by the Reading Room staff for the use of Digital Cameras without the use of flashes. The permission will be applicable only on that particular visit - you will have to apply for permission on each visit. I do not think that the above rules are unreasonable - and if it results in better preservation of documents we should support the initiative.
