The family name seems to be Russell. I am so glad this subject was brought up. I would never ever have thought of putting 'Duke of Bedford + South Africa" into Google if there had not been this correspondence on the List. What treasures I found! Not what our correspondent wanted - well, I gave up after exploring 10 pages! - but there were lots of Boer War references, stacks on zoos and animals, of course, and a lovely Appreciation of Georgette Heyer. Did you know that GH's novel 'The Spanish Bride' was based on the Autobiography of Sir Harry Smith? I didn't, and as I lived for a while in Port Elizabeth I appreciate the book all the more. Now off to amazon.com to see if I can find a copy.... Thank you, and sorry I couldn't help more. Go well! Ivy Trott.

Hello Coral If the Duke of Bedford grew oranges and they children went to Springfield it sounds like the children were boarders ? Oranges are grown mainly in the Citrusdal and Clanwilliam regions but of course their would be other farms elsewhere. I have a house in Clanwilliam so I know just how big the citrus groves up that part of the world are. The again if they grew up in Claremont - Springfield was just a gallop down the road on Horse and Cart. Checking voters rolls and municipal directories would also be a good start. Any idea what the Duke of Bedford's "real name" was ? kind regards Heather Visit South Africa's premier Genealogy + Family History Web sites : www.familytree.co.za <http://www.familytree.co.za> + www.ancestry.mweb.co.za <http://www.ancestry.mweb.co.za> -----Original Message----- From: Foster, Coral A. Hello Frank Shipping info can be hard to come by - there are some details in the Cape of Good Hope Government Gazette housed at the Cape Town Archives. Someone would have to go through them for you and that is quite a mission. Alternatively you can contact the Archives directly. The contact details can be found on their website http://www.national.archives.gov.za/index.htm and you would email the Cape Town Archives. Hi Ivy As far as I can ascertain, the establishment was not the White Horse Inn but the White House Hotel and it was situated on the corner of Strand and Long Street (no 46). Hello Sharon I looked up in few books specifically the "Précis of the Archives of the Cape of Good Hope: requesten" to see if anything appeared on Sitia but nothing appears in Volume one. The word Krom Elboog probably means a "a bend in the road" thus the description for its name or perhaps someone had a something wrong with their elbow ? kind regards Heather Visit South Africa's premier Genealogy + Family History Web sites : www.familytree.co.za <http://www.familytree.co.za> + www.ancestry.mweb.co.za <http://www.ancestry.mweb.co.za> -----Original Message----- From: Sharon Warr [mailto:snw@absamail.co.za] Sent: 25 February 2005 10:14 PM To: SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [South-Africa-Cape-Town] Kromme Elleboog??? Hello to All Whenever I am in town, near to the Houses of Parliament, I have noticed a little lane called "Krom Elmboog" and have wondered at its origins. Recently again in something I was reading I came across a reference to a washerwoman, Sitia van die Kaap, living at number 16 Kromme Elleboog. Has anyone any idea how this street got its name? Thank you so much for this interesting reply which I will mention to Irene Schaffer. I think she may have obtained some of his army papers, and will see if she can give some more leads. I must see if I can find a picture of the inn. Your kind co-operation is much appreciated. Go well! The White Horse Inn was on the NW corner of Strand and Long Streets and was a boarding house. I think it was demolished in the 70s or 80s. It did not have a good reputation at the time and was mainly short term rents. It was a beautiful old building with a lots of "Brookie Lace" if I remember correctly! In my commemorative edition of the Cape Town and Suburban Town Guard there is no mention of him being a member of No 23 (Scott's) Company neither under BOOKER or BIDENCOPE or close approximations thereof. Scott's was also not a railway company. These were "B" Railway Company and "D" Company, Cape Government Railways and his name is in neither of them. This is not to say he was never a member as this is a photographic record of a specific time. As far as I am aware there are also no records of service as this was a volunteer organisation similar to the Home Guard in the UK in WWII Regards, David B -----Original Message----- From: Ivy Trott [mailto:ivytrott@telkomsa.net] Sent: 27 February 2005 05:29 To: SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [South-Africa-Cape-Town] White Horse Inn (not the song!) I seem to be inundating you all with queries to-day. Someone in England saw my queries on the Devon List about Pentecost and asks me if I know some in Australia.... well, I hardly know them in Cape Town yet, but if any of you are researching the family and know of an Australian branch, do please tell me about it. Thank you to the Listers who answered my plaintive plea! Heather in particular has winkled some really interesting information for me. Some of you may recall that I have been trying to find something about WILLIAM HENRY HENDRICK. Have found the Death Notice of his mother, ANN, but not much information on it - obviously all that they had in the hospital records when she died. Definitely establishes William as her son, though, and says she was born in the Cape Colony. Now we thought she was born in Holland, but had no maiden name.... I know that she lived in Barrack Street, Cape Town, and other family members named MEYER were there also. In fact Meyer was William's wife's surname. She was GEORGINA MARIA MEYER and her father was JOSEPH MEYER but at some time he was also called MYERS. If anyone has any info on them I would be very grateful. Thank you, and go well.
