I am hoping someone on the list can explain to me what the Colonial Orphan Chambers were. In 1905 my husband's grandfather was before the magistrates in Cape Town for unpaid rent to this organisation. He was a clergyman so maybe worked/lived at the Chambers. Would be grateful for any assistance with this or any information about the names (below) which I'm researching. If any listers are researching these families, I'll be more than willing to share information with them. Thanks, Jan Hill Researching in S Africa: Rev Frederick WINGATE (various postings 1890-1910). Yes it always pays to look at the original document yourself - I recently had an address transcribed by a previous researcher as Levisham Terrace which did not exist, but when I finally tracked down a digital copy of the original it turned out to be Turnham Green Terrace! Thanks for your replies, Coral Anna and Heather. Fishermen/sailors and Kalk Bay definitely strikes a cord. I will have to do some more detective work and question the oldies for more clues before I take this further as I do not have enough information yet and could be barking up the wrong tree. Hi Mike, Besides Death Notices/Estate Papers (MOOC) at the Cape Archives, http://www.national.archives.gov.za/naairs.htm , it would be well worth trying GISA in Stellenbosch. They have a project called SAG (SA Genealogies) which includes Church entries. Volume 12 (So - Sz) has now been completed and may include SOLOMON/S. GILMORE-GILMOUR is listed in Volume 2 (D - G) Their contact details are at: http://www.sun.ac.za/gisa/home.asp Good luck, Elva > From: "butlerm" <butlerm@mcmaster.ca> > Date: 17 August 2005 2:07:36 AM > To: SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: SOLOMON in Cape Town > > > Good afternoon all. Hello Listers, I am looking for any information regarding a small group of Philipino immigrants/workers to the Cape pre 1900. There was a message posted on one of the lists which just touched on this, but after doing List searches I am unable to find this message. Hoping someone can steer me in the right direction. Elva, I don't know too much about this, but I do know that there are Filipino graves above Kalk Bay just off Boyes Drive - I have personally seen 2 of them. They are of fishermen/sailors. I also think that there might be some graves over in the old Simonstown cemetery, where there are also some Russian sailor graves. I know that there were quite a few Filipinos who were employed as fishermen out of Kalk Bay harbor. I heard quite a few stories about them from the people (descendants?) there when I lived there for 10 years before I came to the states. Good luck, I hope someone can steer you in the right direction. But if you need someone to get you pictures of the gravestones, I might be able to help you with that. Good afternoon all. I'm looking for my grand-father and his family. Jacobus Solomon was born in Cape Town in 1901. His father was Isaac Solomon (possibly the son of Jeremias), and I think his mother was Sarah. There were also siblings Isaac, Sophie, Wilhelmina. There may also have been a Reuben, but the story is not clear. Jacob married my grand-mother Martha GILMORE around 1929. She was born in Durban. Unfortunately, that's about all I have. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm cross-posting to the SA list, so I apologize in advance for the doubles. Regards, Mike

Hi Anne, Contact details for Cape Town Municipal Cemtereries and Crematoria is at: http://www.capegateway.gov.za/eng/directories/services/14709/21865 They do lookups but as it is very time-consuming and they don't have sufficient staff, the fees is high, ie. R225 per name as from 1 July 2005. It may be better to ask a private researcher or ask a relative living in Cape Town. When researching Maitland Cemetery on the internet there is not alot of info. Are there people who will do lookups in this Cemetery? My Great Grandfather & his wife are buried there. Sir Thomas Muir 1844-1934 , Lady Margaret Muir 1843-1919. I have a distant relative that has photos of the Headstones but will not share with anyone so I was hoping I could find out if they were undamaged & still viewable.
