    3. Hello Marion I had a quick look at NAAIRS (the National Archives database) and there are at least 18 hits for James Hardy in the Cape Town Archives and there are 2 with MOK prefix which is Kimberley - James Knight Hardy estate papers 1898 and 1899 - this might be your man. To browse the website yourself visit http://www.national.archives.gov.za/index.htm and follow the instructions. Once you have found something you want to follow up on you will have to contact the archives repository or request a private researcher to access the documents for you. 3. Hi Fellow Listers I wonder if some-one can provide me with some pearls of wisdom........... I am helping a friend with her family tree and we have recently discovered that her Grandfather was born in South Africa. As I've never undertaken any research in SA, I'm at a loss as to what to do next!!! Known dtails are rather sketchy: William HARDY, son of James HARDY Farmer and Sarah JONES was born about 1880 - 1886 in Kimberley, SA. He came to Australia about 1902 (I have not been able to locate his shipping records either............). He married here, on 17 March 1923 in St Mary's Catholic Church, Echuca, Australia to Agnes Hilda SYMMONS. William's approximate date of birth is from his marriage in 1923 when he was shown as a bachelor aged 37 years. When he died in 1952, he was shown as aged 72 years which puts his approximate year of birth as 1880. I've searched for William's parents deaths and cannot locate them in Australia, so I think they may have remained in SA when William came over. Where would I start to look for William's birth & the death of his parents in SA ? Hoping some-one can help Marion Ellis Queensland, Australia

    3. Hello Geoffrey and Ivy I browsed the National Archives database and came up with the following which might be connected. The first is filed in Cape Town and the other in Pietermaritzberg. Seeing that Jack McEwan was sent to Natal this seems a positive hit. You will have to find someone who is willing to do the lookup for you. 3. Dear Listers, I have had the attached message returned as undeliverable. Can anyone help me, please, to find out who I need to ask about this? I can send on a copy of the piece in question if needs be – I believe it was originally posted to another list, not this one. I first found it on this list in July. Thank you Julie M. Hopper. ________________________________________ From: Bryan Lewis [mailto:bryanlewis@hotkey.net.au] Sent: Thursday, 6 October 2005 9:25 AM To: 'morwest@polka.co.za' Subject: "We are the Chosen" Dear Estie, I think I may have contacted you before about this, I’m not sure. You may have replied and I missed it – we had some trouble with this computer earlier in the year, and one of the things that happened was that I lost all my e-mails, read and unread, as well as my address book.  I found the piece “We are the Chosen” on the South Africa Cape Town mailing list, and you mentioned that you were forwarding it with the permission of a person named Charlie Moore who had posted it on another list. I am the editor of a newsletter for a family history group in Australia, and as this piece is so moving and so appropriate for all family history researchers, I wanted to use it. I see that the author of the piece is unknown – do you think there would be any objection to it being published in one of our newsletters? Regards Julie M. Hopper.

    3. Hi Gerard Did a Quick Search on the National Archives - there's nothing in Capetown -this one comes up on All Archives & Repositories and National Register non-Public Records (RSE) and I think this one could be the one for your Edward Sutton. There are 6 other records on this Search but dealing with an Edward Sutton Burrows and his wife Agnes so could of course be related. If you can't access let me know and I'll send them as well. DEPOT TAB SOURCE SAC TYPE LEER VOLUME_NO 229 SYSTEM 01 REFERENCE H1895 PART 1 DESCRIPTION RECORD OF CONDUCT AND SERVICE. EDWARD SUTTON. STARTING 1901 ENDING 1906 You can check the Depot address you need to apply to if you choose to phone or mail on the page link I sent yesterday. You must send all details as they appear above.
