Hi David, The Genealogical Society of South Africa (GSSA) has a page containing projects relating to various registers at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~zafgssa/Eng/Projects.html There is a Cemetery CD version 3 available, but not all cemeteries in SA have been completed. There are some Observatory Cemeteries recorded. Go to the NAAIRS site at: http://www.national.archives.gov.za/naairs.htm Click 'SEARCH' and choose GEN (Genealogical Society of Gravestones) from the Database. Insert one name per line as search words, eg. 13 documents were found for BOND. Also there are contact details for city of Cape Town Cemeteries at: http://www.capegateway.gov.za/eng/directories/services/14709/21865 Good luck, Elva > From: "David Cowie" <david@sa-cycling.com> > Date: 21 December 2005 8:12:59 AM > To: SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: BOND, WILLIAMS and Memorial Inscriptions > > > Greetings all, > > I am researching part of my family tree (pedigree and not a ONS) > > Sydney James BOND (my g.grandfather) > Born 1887 > Died 1940 > Resident in Cape Town in the Rondebosch, Claremont, Observatory area. > Married Florence Edith WILLIAMS in 1913 > She died in 1937 > > Any information will be gratefully received. I have a grandfather, Sydney Walter Hudson born Cape Town, c1886. That spelling of Sydney may have been common at the time. If anyone has a Sydney Walter HUDSON b. c1886 or a Lavinia POWELL b. c1887 both presumably born in Cape Town (according to records in Australia), I would be most interested. I have no records prior to their arrival in Australia in 1908. I've since discovered that Sydney Bond is buried in the Maitland Cemetery in Cape Town. (parents are amazing sources of information, but only when you ask the right questions!) Does anyone know where the transcriptions are or how can I buy the Cemetery CD ver 3 (providing Maitland is on there ?) thanks David > Hi David, > > The Genealogical Society of South Africa (GSSA) has a page containing > projects relating to various registers at: > http://www.rootsweb.com/~zafgssa/Eng/Projects.html > There is a Cemetery CD version 3 available, but not all cemeteries in > SA have been completed.

I am new to this list, I live in South Australia and am researching my gr gr grandfather George McMillan (Master Mariner) and family who lived in Cape Town on and off from 1858. I am keen to know what shipping records are retained and where they would be held so I can try and piece together further information about the family. Jenny
Hello Jenny If he was a master mariner you should consult the following sources: Cape Almanac directories which were published every year from 1828 until late 1880's - there is a shipping intelligence section which gives information similar to this: Ship Name: Lady Borringdon Ship Type: Ship Cargo: Naval Stores Captain Name: R Leithbridge Nation: English Departed From: London Departure Date: 27 May 1817 Departure To: Cape & Mauritius Departure To Date: 25 Jun 1817 Source : 1818 African Court Calendar Book - www.familytree.co.za Also the Cape Government Gazette published much the same information. This newspaper was published on a weekly basis and can be found in the Cape Town Archives and the National Library in Cape Town. Also housed in the Cape Archives are the following: Registers of Arrivals and Departures of Ships, Algoa Bay 1846-1901 are held under Reference CC - i.e. the Archives of the Secretary, Cape Town Chamber of Commerce. These registers give the captain's name and sometimes the first class passengers. Ref PWD -Archives of the Secretary of Public Works - Volume 2/401 holds passenger lists for 1872-1884 - the Captains names should appear here as well. Hi Ivy, DEOV = Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteer Rifles now more commonly known as "The Dukes". They have undergone quite a few name changes in their history. Where is the St Paul's cemetery and is it the St Paul's from Bree Street in CT? I would be very interested in visiting it. I find it highly unusual that there is a grave of someone who died at Delville Wood, it is more likely to be a memorial. I can find no record of a John ROBERTSON either in the roll call of South Africans taking part in or the Roll of Honour of Delville Wood. I would suggest that if you are researching the ROBERTSON that you check the detail with the CWGC on their website. Sorry, but I only looked for my own family names, I don't have a list of all those who had been buried there. However, I am going to try to find more info and will make a note of your RIddle name when I get an appointment to see the funeral records - if they still exist! << There were no Presbyterian marriages in England and Wales between 1754 and 1837. Under Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1754 all marriages had to take place in a Church of England parish church. Hi there folks, We are Mike and Jocelyn Bannister. Mike was born in England and Jocelyn in New Zealand and we live in Albury NSW on the NSW Victoria border, in Australia. Our interest in Capetown is that in 1821 Peter Hardman, a Lance Corporal in the 49th Regiment of Foot of the British Army and Lucy his wife, had a son John in your fair town. I would be interested in talking with anyone who might be researching this family, or who might have access to burial records or baptism records for the 3 years previous and 10 years following John's birth. Your help would be much appreciated Thanks and Giday Mike & Jocelyn Bannister
