3. WoW! so many queries on old buildings and streets in Cape Town of yore. I don't know if this helps but when I worked in the Town Planning and Building Survey branches of the City Council in the early 60's a few civic minded architects made Street elevation drawings of a number of the cities streets as it was around this time that a lot of old CT was starting to dissappear. The building Survey branch also had the plans of buildings going back over 100 years. I'm not sure but I think that the University of Cape Town has a lot of information in their libraries on old Cape Town buildings Neville ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Lock" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 07, 2010 11:04 AM Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] chiappini street > Hi everyone, > > Does anyone have a photo of 10 Chiappini Street? 3. In the Church of the Laterday Saints records, there is listed, for a Henry Gebhardt and a Martha Johanna van Eyk, seven children, 3 male and 4 female. All born 1827-1844. In Cape Town/Paarl. There were also families with surname of Gebhardt in the Eastern Cape, in the area settled by German's, i.e. Stutterheim, Berlin, Keiskama hoek, etc. Whether the surname is of the same spelling, not known. As far as I have been aware, we are direct descendants of the Rev. JWL Gebhardt who came to South Africa in 1810. Does anybody have any information that states that there was more children? 3. Hello Neville Thank you for this information. It has helped us to clarify our data. My ancestor, Lauritz Emil Nielsen wrote 72 Strand Street in his application for Naturalization and we thought that it was his own property. It is interesting that Lauritz was a cabinet maker and the Munniks were carpenters. It is just a little bit more detail or another piece of the zigsaw about the life of Lauritz. If you are interested I can send you the Naturalization papers off line. 3. Hi, I am searching for my ancestor from Ostrobothnia, Finland. I know that he first came to the US in 1916, I have found him at the Ellis Island records. Then he sent some letters and post-cards home to Karleby in Ostrobothnia in Finland, but the letters stopped coming after a few years. I have some papers that says that he came to Africa and died there, that´s why I am searching for him at this forum. Name: Peter Koskinen (or ALBACK or Kivela) Born: July (or February) 16, 1878 Place: Karleby (Kokkola) Vasa, Ostrobothnia, Finland. Wife: Maria Catharina (Hallback) - born 1865 - died 1918. Children: Siri born 1906, and Margit born 1908. Siri was my grandmother, she died in 1991. Perhaps someone knows something about this matter or can give me some tip. Best regards, Pia Hassel-Stam Stockholm Sweden

<font face<a style

    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] McQUEEN, PEARCE, BANKS, VAN VUREN and PROCTOR

    3. Hi all Having just been to a reunion of the THECK family it has been brought to light in the family that there is a connection to all of the above names. Anna THECK married a PEARCE in PE, still around today and either Agnes or Josephine THECK married an 1820 descendant of McQUEEN. Maybe someone has a McQUEEN tree and will suss a connection and then Wilhelmina BANKS m a VAN VUREN (1U) and their daughter Sarah Cornelia (Nelly) married Charles Henry Somerset PROCTOR ......... Apparently we can connect to 1600s with the VAN VURENs from the Netherlands but we are searching for BANKS and PROCTOR. Anyone with any info on these family names would be much appreciated. I have seen the Nelly and Charles on NAAIRS so apart from that record maybe someone else has more info. Any leads will be gratefully received. Regards Paxie

    3. Hello from Brisbane, Australia. My maternal grandmother Constance Kate Miles was born on Nov 2, 1891 in Cape Town. This is all i know apart from her emigration to Australia c1907. Constance was one of her parents' younger children and was the oldest surviving daughter. Her parents were Harry Mowat H Miles an Englishman who i believe did some journalism about the times of the diamond fever in Kimberley. He married Agnes P Ferguson in Australia and then they emigrated to South Africa - i think in about the 1870's (late). Harry died on the diamond fields of fever in 1899. He apparently was a Lodge Grand Master but i don't know which one. I understand his Lodge paid for Agnes' return, with her children, to Australia c 1907. Is there a chance of someone locating something about this family of mine!?? Kind regards Julie

    3. Strand Street is not in the suburb of Woodstock but in Cape Town central, Today no 72 it is occupied by Strand Towers building, it was called Strand Street Because originally it was the road that ran past the beach in Table Bay. In 1901 it was the residence of a Mrs Munnik see http://www.genealogyworld.net/boer/western_m.html Neville ----- Original Message ----- From: "E & V Waugh" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, April 06, 2010 11:28 AM Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] Photo of Woodstock Cape Town > > > To everyone on the mailing list > > > > I was wondering if anyone had a photo/map/any knowledge of Cape Town in > the > early 1900's showing : > > > > 72 Strand Street, Woodstock, Cape Town > > > > I would be very grateful for any bits of information or web links. > > > > Vivienne > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' > without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    3. I have a picture of Riebeek House or Hotel, taken in what looks to be the late 1800's Cape Town. There are a group of people standing both on the upper balcony and sitting on the steps and verandah but none are identified. I cannot seem to find any information on this place and wondered if anyone had any ideas on where to look. Thanks,Sharon/researching Heyne/Pike
