    3. Hi, does anybody have a THOMPSON married to an Anne WALKER about the 1960's or so ? I am trying to find out what happened to my cousin Anne WALKER, daughter of Henry Gordon 'Harry' WALKER b 1895 d 1972. All I have been told is that she married somebody THOMPSON - no first name and no dates ! Thanks, Sylvia _________________________________________________________________ The New Busy is not the too busy. 3. Hi Neville Hope this helps: SELBORNE, William Waldegrave Palmer, 2nd Earl of. High Commissioner and Governor. London 17.10.1859 - London 26.2.1942. Having graduated in history at the University of Oxford, he was Under-Secretary for the Colonies from 1895 to 1900, when he was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. He came to South Africa to succeed Lord Milner as High Commissioner in South Africa and Governor of the Transvaal and Orange River Colony in April 1905. He showed much more understanding and was much more approachable than his haughty predecessor; also, as a keen farmer, he was bound to be more popular than Milner in an agrarian community. Two major developments, in which he himself played a leading part, took shape during his term of office. The first was the early introduction of William Waldegrave Palmer, 2nd Earl of Selborne. responsible government in the former republics. Here he was opposed to the Milner policy, which envisaged such an eventuality only after sufficient strengthening of the British element through immigration during a relatively long period of advanced Crown colony government. Also, Lord Selborne took the lead - in close co-operation with the Milner kindergarten - in working for closer union of the various colonies. His chief claim to be remembered in South Africa rests upon his Selborne memorandum (1907). Its immediate object was to deal with the vexed railway question, but the terms of the memorandum implied that some form of closer union was inescapable. When union was an accomplished fact, Lord Selborne, a Conservative, had to make way for a Liberal, Lord Gladstone, and so was deprived of the honour of becoming the Union's first governor-general. Selborne, Selborne College in East London and Selborne Primary School at Vereeniging are named after him. 3. Hello Glynis Yes THANK YOU - I HAVE received the amazing Woodstock pictures/photos that you have sent and I am very grateful - it's just like Christmas! Woodstock seems to have grown quite rapidly. It is interesting to look back at how places used to look. I sometimes wish that they had stayed the same - I like the older architecture. I have also read the text and learnt a lot as well. These pictures are priceless! So far I have received 11 attachments/pictures. Thank you for all the time and effort you have taken to do this. He was famous for the Selbourne Memorandum issued on Jan 7 1907 which served as the basis for the National Convention. Returned to England in 1910 and died 1942. I don't know anything about the LYMER family but I have sent off your e mail to a relative who lived there a few decades ago. Hopefully she will know something. Failing that I will remember the name and forward anything that I think will be relevant. Have you tried Ancestry24? I subscribed yesterday and was truly amazed at what you can download ( if only I had more hours in my day). The only thing is I haven't worked out how to pay for the documents that are not free - BUT a lot of the documents are free. Heather tells me that you can start forums for people researching specific names. I haven't worked out how to do this yet. Good Luck Vivienne

I actually do have a copy of this death notice, but it's wonderful how willing people are to help each other. What I have been hoping to find is more information about what Woodstock was like around the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. It's just such a pleasure to be able to see, in one's mind, the type of environment our ancestors lived in. 3. Hi Glynis, I too would love to see the photo's of Woodstock. My great uncle Thomas Henry Lymer lived in Selborne Road in the 1920's with his wife Nina and three daughters whose names I do not know. He was born in London but emigrated in about 1897. His daughters were born about 1908,1910 and 1912. I know they all married but I have been unable to trace records for them. If anyone has come across the surname Lymer in Woodstock I would love to hear from you. I have photo's of the family. In the meantime, I will send you the post card from my collection. I would absolutely *love* to have copies of your pictures and postcards. Thank you so much for such a kind offer. What is the "Woodstock Whisperer"? I have an as-yet-unconfirmed-100% connection to Woodstock, but my "gut" is telling me that the connection is real, and I just have to prove it. I'm pretty sure that it is where my husband's paternal grandmother was born in 1887 - her father being Robert WATERS, a carpenter, living in Gibbons / Adams cottages, just off Victoria Street! He died, only 42, in Adams Cottages in 1893. So, whenever you have the time, I'll be so very happy to have copies. Thank you again. 2. Hi Glynis & Other listers My late father Vernon William Crofton was born at 13 Cavendish Place, Woodstock in 1921 so I would be very interested in copies of the "Woodstock Whisperer" as well as the other pictures you mention Glynis. My grandfather, George Paget Crofton was also born in Cape Town but I've hit a brick wall trying to find out who his father is so if anybody could help me with that I would be most grateful, I have found baptism records at St Saviours Claremont which gives Annie Smeda as his mother but no mention of his father, there were 4 siblings so surely Annie was married to somebody Crofton, or not? Regards Darryl Crofton
