    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] LONGMORE / THOMAS-KING
    2. Maurice Sheppard
    3. Hi all, As part of my research into Victorian singer/actress Marie (Mary) LONGMORE, I am now trying to check whether her brother, Alexander, eventually settled/died in South Africa. Born in Bilston (Staffordshire) in 1841, he joined the 20th Regiment of Foot (later absorbed into the Lancashire Fusiliers) in 1860, which included a tour of duty in South Africa. Whilst there, on 23rd April 1871 at Williamstown, he married Alice THOMAS-KING (bn circa 1853 in Natal). He arrived back in the UK in January 1872 and until his discharge at the end of March 1882, he appears to have served on the staff of 17 Brigade at Wellington Barracks in Bury, Lancashire. On the 1881 Census he is shown at the Barracks with the rank of Sergeant Major, along with his wife and children Alexander (bn 1875), John (bn 1877), Charles Frances (bn 1879), and Lilian Lydia (bn 1881). His military records show that he was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer in July 1881, but after that he and his family just disappear, not appearing on 1891, 1901 or 1911 censuses, nor do the children appear to marry or die. This makes me think that he & his family may have returned to South Africa. Although his sister Marie performed in the USA, Germany & Australia, as well as the UK, I have no record of her having worked in South Africa. I would welcome contact/information from anyone who can add to my knowledge of this branch of the LONGMORE and/or THOMAS-KING families. Regards, Maurice Sheppard at The LONGMORE Pages http://www.msheppard.com

    3. Hi, Are you sure it isn't Alice THOMAS at Kingwilliamstown? There is also a ref in the National archives as follows: "DEPOT VAB (Free State Archives) SOURCE MHG (Master of the High Court) TYPE LEER (File) VOLUME_NO 0 SYSTEM 01 REFERENCE L1944 PART 1 DESCRIPTION LONGMORE, ALEXANDER MICHAEL PAGET. EGGENOTE (Spouse) ALICE KATE LONGMORE. STARTING 19210000 ENDING 19210000 " I have added the necessary English translation in brackets. Perhaps some kind soul will do the look up for you in Bloemfontein. It will be a record of the estate (probate) and with luck will contain a deat notice with family deails David B Born in Bilston (Staffordshire) in 1841, he joined the 20th Regiment of Foot (later absorbed into the Lancashire Fusiliers) in 1860, which included a tour of duty in South Africa. 3. My godfather in East London was an Alec LONGMORE, close friend of my father and I suppose more or less his contemporary (my father was born in 1909). I don't know whether he is from the same family, though the name may not be coincidental, and I may be able to find more details about him if you need them (including photos). 3. Can anyone help me find information on the marriages of Thomas & George Sheffield. They arrived in Grahamstown in 1860 with their parents and other brothers & sisters. By the mid 1880s Thomas & George owned the Eastern Star newspaper in Garahmstown and in the late 1880's they moved to Johannesburg. The only details I have on their marriages is that Thomas' 1st wife died in 1879 and he remarried to Kathleen Mason - I believe that both marriages were in Grahamstown And re George Sheffield, all I know is that his wife's name was Julia. 2. Property Listing Association
    3. Once again I am trying to trace the Ashley family history. Have through Ancestry 24 managed to pick up quite a bit of information which is great but seem to have come to a halt. According to my Grandfather's (Edwin Langford) Death Notice his mother was Jane Maria Woodward Ashley (nee Shearer). She married Clement Walter in May 1877 and information I have managed to find is that she had 5 children (Clement Charles, George Stanley, Maud, Sydney William and Constance). Constance Ashley married Percival White Honnet whom we were told was our grandfather's sister. Jane Maria Woodward Ashley married Harry Coomber (unable to find out when) and they had a son Lewis Woodward on 17 June 1898 and apparently the marriage was dissolved about 1903 and she changed Lewis Woodward's surname from Coomber to Ashley. Edward Langford Ashley was born, from what we can gather from the death notice, around about October 1897 and this is where we cannot fit the pieces as not having exact the exact date of his birth makes it difficult o work out as there seems to be only 8 months between the two, and unless he was born prematurely could not have been her child and yet the death notice says mother. Any help would be really appreciated. Penny Hobbs

    3. Hello, My grandfather Francis Bolton George Tipler was born in 1906 in Cape of Good Hope South Africa. His parents left shortly after his birth and returned to England. Not much longer they came to Canada and this is where they stayed. I live in Northern Ontario Canada. I noticed a conversation about preserving cemeteries in South Africa. A fellow from here decided several years ago to take pictures of every tombstone in Northern Ontario and put it on line. He is now working his way through Ontario and has another site for all of Canada. Just thought you might like to check it out. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~murrayp/ Sincerely Tammy Tipler Priolo
