Hello, is there a lister who could possibly help with the parents and family of James Billings born Cape Town, 1820 or 1822. There seems to be a military connection with the family so maybe he was born to a Betish couple stationed there? Thanks very much, Shirley. NZ
Hi Maurice, Thansk for your response. William Edward ANDERSON born Camberwell Surrey 4th February 1880 Lilian Beatrice ANDERSON, nee Walker born 29th October 1879 in Dallington County Northampton Herbert William ANDERSON born9th August 1904 Camberwell Surrey. Hi Lynn, I can't spot anything within the timeframe you have given, but it would help if you could give me the years of their births, last known place in the UK, and, if known, the husbands' occupations. I notice that you have access to passenger lists and wonder if you can assist me at all? I have a William Edward ANDERSON, with wife Lilian Beatrice ANDERSON and son Herbert William ANDERSON who arrived in Cape Town from UK somewhere between 1910 and 1913 together with William George WALKER, his wife Lilian Rose WALKER and their daughter Lilian Flora WALKER. I have not been able to find any information about their ship, their arrival in CapeTown or anything immediately following their arrival? The best I have come up with is:- A George Henry STEWART born Lambeth September quarter 1848. No Stewart GEORGE's come up in that period in Surrey. In June qtr. 1879 I found a George STEWART married in Potterspury, on the borders of Buckinghamshiere & Northanptonshire - he possibly married a Lucy RADCLIFFE I found a David James STEWART who married in Cambridge in the March qtr 1843 - his wife was possibly Harriet REEVES Anothe David STEWART married in Hartley Wintney in the December qtr 1848 and his wife was possibly Harriet HIBBARD I cant find any birth of a Lucy Stewart that seems to match your family! Hope this hasn't confused you. She was carrying a load of timber out of Boston harbour USA. My Great Grandfather, Omund Rasmussen, was one of the ships crew and I am attempting to confirm this and the year that the ship went down. Sorry, but I don't have anything prior to 1890. Mr. F.W.BAXTER - date of birth unknown - sailed Southampton to Cape Town on board ss Tartar departed 1 February 1896. He was single and APPEARS to have been travelling alone, but on the same vessel, same sailing, we also have....... Mr. S. BAXTER - aged 22, occupation draper, English nationality, and single - sailed Southampton to East London on board ss Tartar departed 1 February 1896 (Steerage). The only other male BAXTERs in this same timeframe are:- Mr. BAXTER - no initials, forenames or date of birth, but of Scottish nationality - sailed Southampton to Natal on board ss Mexican departed 25 July 1890. He was single and appears to have been travelling alone. No other information available Mr. BAXTER - no initials, forenames or date of birth, but of English nationality - sailed Southmpton to Cape Town on borad ss Mexican departed 19 August 1893. He was married and was travelling with a Miss BAXTER. No other information available. The second one looks hopeful and if you'd like me to send the passenger manifest image offlist, I will happily do so. (It will be quite a large file). I tried to find Samuel on the 1891 Census, but the nearest match I can find is a 20 year old commercial traveller boarding in Leicester but born in Beckenham. Perhaps you know better! Hi Carol, I have had a quick look at the "Free BDM" website for UK and can't really trace this family. Hello all There have been helpful responses to recent requests for info from passenger lists, so I'm hoping someone can help me. I'd be very grateful for info, if it's available, on my g-g-grandfather - Thomas Thomson Hall - who would have travelled from England in early-to-mid 1840. I know he was definitely in South Africa by 1848. I have been searching unsuccessfully for his arrival in SA - even visited the National Archives at Kew, but found they have no passenger records to SA for the 1840s. Ancestry24's passenger records show several "Mr Hall" for that period, but as there are no Christian names or personal details, I don't know which, if any, of these are my relative. Any help or advice would be appreciated, Mary
Hi List and all, I still have had no success in finding my MILLETT AND OR CLAY family that left South Africa for the UK in 1910. I would be most grateful if someone can do a look up for me as I have tried without success. They are: William CLAY or MILLETT left SA with his wife Isabella Johanna and two sons, William George and Richard John. They could have left under the name CLAY or MILLETT. The 3rd son James Henry we were lead to believe was born on ship on 3 September 1910. He was the only son baptized in Marazion St. Johns Church, Cornwall, on 11 January 1911. William George was born on 29 July 1907 and Richard John born 10 December 1908. Isabella born 1885/6 in South Africa and her husband William George Richard (father) born October 1880 in Toungoo, Burma. His grandparents were living in Marazion and their names were: William PHILLIPS and Ann PHILLIPS (nee MICHELL). William George Richard, Isabella and their 3 sons were living with the PHILLIPS family during the 1911 census. I would love to know what boat the family went to the UK in and when they left to go to the UK. They returned to South Africa on the Balmoral Castle Date of Departure: 28th Oct 1911 Where Bound: South Africa Port of Departure: Southampton Passenger Names: MILLETT, Mr W, Mrs + 3 Mstrs (all English, travelling 3rd Class) Occupation: Blacksmith Port at which passengers have contracted to land: Cape I would appreciate if someone could lead me into the right direction. Thank you. Glynis
Hi Maurice Many thanks for your quick response and information . FW looks to be 100% correct --- or very close . I agree with what you think re Samuel , possible sailing on 1 Feb 1896 -- will not discount the second possibility at this stage . Please could you send whatever information/copies of documents you may have . Much appreciated and maybe I could be of help to you one day .
