Hi, While trolling to find information on my gg grandmother's grandson Lieutenant John Alexander TOWER-ROBERTSON I found a very interesting website http://www.ww1photos.com/photoArchivehtml/ Apparently there are photographs and obituaries on a great number of people...it was very tempting as there appears to be an article in The Sphere dated 12th February 1916 on John, but they want a payment of £3.00 odd....however much I would like to see it I'm not prepared to pay... One is allowed to see the collection of WW1 postcards.... I hope this may be of help to someone... Best wishes, Tombi Peck

Dear NAAIRS users I regret that the error indicated in red below has been occurring frequently on NAAIRS in recent weeks, and at the time of writing, the indications are that the current unavailability that started on Friday not be resolved within the next few days. In normal circumstances, NAAIRS should be freely accessible to any web user. It sometimes happens that the system does not properly terminate individual users' search sessions, and consequently over time the maximum limit on the number of users is exceeded, and the system then prevents new users from signing on. This problem has been occurring frequently in recent weeks, and it requires the external service provider SITA to recycle or restart the support system to free up the user IDs. As this problem also occurs after hours and over weekends it is then not rectified as soon as we would like. The National Archives has been engaging SITA vigorously over several weeks towards finding a permanent solution, and our concerns have now been escalated by the DAC Chief Information Officer within SITA. Interventions such as increasing the maximum number of users and automatic recycling every night have not eliminated the problem; while the error which occurred today appears to be more serious in that SITA is not succeeding to make NAAIRS available at all. We regret the impact on service delivery that the non-availability of NAAIRS has within archives repositories and to the public. Every effort will be made on our side to resolve the immediate problem of accessibility and we hope that this explanation will help to place the matter in perspective. Hi Ray I have forwarded your enquiry to Neil Furness, originally from Mossel Bay, now living in Howick. His grandfather was a John Furness. There are records/reference to John Furness in Naairs. Hi Ray The Almanacs are lists of principal inhabitants of Cape Town and surrounds. If they died in Cape Town you need to get a copy of their deceased estates papers which included as death notice. You can read more on death notices here: http://ancestry24.com/learning-centre/what-is-a-death-notice/ You can search the National Archives at www.national.archives.gov.za best wishes Heather Heather MacAlister Channel Manager Tel:021 468 8957 Fax:+27 (0)86 581 0390 www.ancestry24.co.za Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/ancestry24 Skype: Ancestry24 -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] on behalf of Ray Skinner Sent: Sun 13/06/2010 07:26 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] Joseph FURNESS and Catherine (nee SKINNER): Possibly emmigrated to Cape Town between 1864 marriage and 1871 Census Seeking information regarding the above. Could someone tell me if it was 'common' or in the realm of possibility, that a man would have two children given the same name, by two different women and both living? In trying to understand the OBERHOLSTER/HARTOG relationship, I know that there was a Johanna Barbara Oberholster born to Jan Oberholster and Helen de Toit, in abt 1713. Prior to this date, there was apparently a daughter born to Jan Oberholster and Agnitie Colyn also named Barbara Oberholster, somewhere about 1706 or so. Oberholster and Colyn were not married and she was the daughter of freed slaves as far as I have read. Barbara Oberholster shows up married to Paulus Hartog in 1827 and Johanna Barbara Oberholster shows up married to someone else. I am interested in the Oberholster/Hartog relationship but I admit to being confused as to the same name being used for both living girls to the same man. There is not any hard data that I can find for Barbara daughter of Agnitie Colyn but Barbara, daughter of Helen de Toit was christened in 1713 and I am trying to confirm that these were two different people. Thanks, Sharon

Could anyone tell me if there are any documents that would indicate the cause of death for someone who passed in 1896 Cape Town? I have the estate papers already and death notice but no cause of death, even though I think that there might have been an obituary. I am also wondering if the memo's or letters that appear to be sent to the government in 1871 and 1881 can be accessed - one from Roedale Prison in Cape Town and another on behalf of Chief Mothebe. These articles do have references in the NAAIRS database. Thank you. Sharon Searching for information on Bebell; Hodson; Heyne; Pike

Could anyone help me, My Grandfather was born in Wales 1866 and come over to south Africa I beleave when he was 42 he had 3 living children with Mary Pirie and settled in Edenvale South Africa. He died on the 30th June 1946 He come over on his own , I only have his death certificate which states his age and where he was born. Iam trying to trace him back to Wales and the ship he come here in Thanking you Margaret Marriott nee stack
Hi Margaret, I am descended from Robert PIRIE and his wife Mary 'Rachel' HORN who emigrated to the Cape of Good Hope with the 1820 Settlers.....I know that is before the time your grandfather went to South Africa. Robert PIRIE married twice more....before he emigrated to South Africa with Mary 'Rachel' HORN and although he had sons by both of these marriages they didn't survive. We don't know when his son Andrew died but Andrew's sister Margaret PIRIE did make the journey to the Cape with her father and step-mother but Andrew did not. We know that Robert PIRIE and Mary 'Rachel' HORN had a son called Robert who was born before the 26th December 1819 in England so must also have travelled to the Cape with his parents although he doesn't appear on the transport lists (he was only a few days old at the time of the sailing)....we know he grew to adulthood as he was responsible for saving the life of his step-father James RICHARDSON when he was attacked by a leopard on his farm..... This is recorded in the Lower Albany Chronicles: "2nd November 1843. John RICHARDSON has been attacked by a leopard while hunting it on his farm Thorn Hill. He brought it to the ground. He was rescued by Mr. PIRIE (his step-son) who killed the animal with his knife." Robert PIRIE Jnr. is also mentioned in his father's will. "......which I leave to my dear children Robert, Sarah Ann, Mary Ann and Elizabeth PIRIE at the death of their mother. Signed Robert PIRIE. We have no further knowledge of Robert PIRIE. If he married and had a daughter, she might well have been given the name Mary after his mother's first name. This Mary might well be the right age to have married your ancestor unfortunately I cannot confirm this. Unfortunately unless your ancestor was wealthy and travelled cabin class to South Africa he would not be mentioned on any of the arrival notices to be found in newspapers in the Cape....2nd and 3rd class passengers are merely recorded as a number, and are not recorded by name. Unfortunately the Cape didn't have good records of their immigrants (other than the few large parties who made it to the Cape or Natal). Perhaps if a link can be found between your Mary PIRIE and my PIRIE family we might find we are distantly related. Sorry I cannot be of more help. Best wishes, Tombi Peck. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Margaret Marriott" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 09, 2010 10:02 AM Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] John Francis George > Could anyone help me, My Grandfather was born in Wales 1866 and come over > to > south Africa I beleave when he was 42 he had 3 living children with Mary > Pirie and settled in Edenvale South Africa.
