Hi, Nail them I did over the week end due to trying to work from Australia and getting that silly ID users message. So got to work and composed a very proper English email because my Afrikaans was never a spoken language other then school lessons 55 odd years ago. Nearly fell over when I got the reply this afternoon, mind you the standard reply everyone else has received but this is the first time they have replied to me. So all I can say is Thank You Mr. Clive Kirkwood. I hope you are the broom which sweeps the Archieves clean and makes researching S.A. ancestors from down-under a lot more free from silly little red messages popping up on ones screen. May he will be the one to set out and computerise all BMD too. Oh would that not be wonderful. A system like the UK Archieves. A dream. Keep on dreaming for a NAAIRS site which does what other places already do. It may happen ?..... ??? .... Hi Peter Thank you for passing on this information. I would be very interested in reading about what happened in Cape Town at the end of the 1800s. There isn't anything specific that I need to know - I would just like to be able to read everything you have. I also have family that lived in Cape Town during this period. What you have is very valuable. I would be able to look at your information on Ancestry24. Hi everyone, I have an unusual enquiry about my grandfather from Cape Town He went over to train as an Apprentice blacksmith in UK , and the Shipping line that took all the young apprentices from Cape Town, South Africa should have a record of his name. In order to be accepted for immigration he would have had to fill in plenty of forms about his parents. If anyone has any idea of such a list which would have been compiled in the early 1900's. My grandfathers name was Benjamin Beaconsfield Smith. Any help would be appreicated. Thanks Helen ________________________________

My grandmother was May Delores Pretorius and her mother was Johanna Catherina ROSSOUW she was born 25 June 1901 in Vryburg and died 25 October 1967 in Oberholzer. Do you perhaps have information on her in your tree? Regards Tammy Wellbeloved Hi there My name is Peter, I'm so excited to join this information source. Here is the last ancestor, I would dearly like to find his parents and I've had no luck so far, so if there is someone out there who can help I am very happy to pay for your time. George William Henry OLIVER born 5 March 1857 in George, Eastern Cape. Died 5 April 1948 Johannesburg, Transvaal. Married 18 September 1881 in Willmore (don't know where this is), South Africa to Gertruida Johanna Gericke born 2 June 1864 in George, Eastern Cape. Died 2 November 1947 in Potchefstroom, Transvaal. (Her Parents were Barend Paul Gericke and Maria Susanna Loock). I've spoken to some other Oliver descendants and some seem to believe that they are from Irish stock and that the above George's dad's name was George William Oliver and his wife was Mary, but this isn't confirmed. I've been in contact with Martha Maria Elizabeth Van Der Valk (nee Oliver) who lives in the Eastern Cape and who's dad was Benjamin Paul (see below) but she hasn't any recolection of her grandparents or great grandparents, which is a pity. But it was fun to speak to such a grand old lady! They had 5 Children; John William OLIVER, Gertruida Johanna OLIVER, Benjamin Paul OLIVER, George Henry OLIVER and Ann OLIVER. And up till my dad's era, all the children have had the same names as the above! My dad Being Lawrence Henry and his Father being George William. My dad has 5 daughters and so couldn't carry on tradition. If anyone knows of someone who can help please, please let me know. My child is two this month and I just cannot find the time to do research anymore but I would dearly like to find my ancestors and complete the tree (Im only interested in the people who came to SA, I'd like to know where they came from and thats it, don't want to go too far back). Try the South Africa Irish Association It has lots of info. There was a Col. Broderick in the Zululand wars...Inniskillings Patricia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bernard Brown" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 15, 2010 10:04 AM Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] Irish Regiment based at the Castle of GoodHope Hello I was wondering if any records were kept of the various Irish regiment soldiers that were based at the Casle of Good Hope? My great grandfather, Patrick Broderick, was apparently a Sargeant in the Irish regiment and based there. I cannot find any information on him and was wondering if any records existed? My grandmother, Louisa Mary Josephine Broderick, was born in Cape Town in 1875, so I am assuming that my great grandfather would have been based at the Castle prior to this date. Your help would be greatly appreciated. I’m searching for descendants of James Peter Brown (b. 1849 d. 1910) and Johanna Rosina Christiana Timmerman (b. 1851 d. 1904). Both James and Johanna were born in Cape Town. Their children’s names were: George Peter Brown, Maggie Nesbit (nee Brown), Rachel Thobbs (nee Brown), Robert Norman Brown, William Brown, John Peter Timmerman Brown, James Henry Brown and Edward Peter Brown. They were all born in Cape Town. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bernard Brown
