Hello Dennis A tidewaiter is a customs officer. He would check the goods as they came off the ship or were loaded on and of he confiscated the goods, probably took them home to his family. My great great grandfather was a tidewaiter and so was his father. There are hundreds of references on Ancestry24.co.za for the surname of Field. Many of them were from District Six. I found this in the SA Genealogies book: FIELD George Bridges Plantaganet Field arrival 15.1.1807 per Merlin van Suid-Amerika married Engelse kerk, Kaapstad 9.9.1822 Aletta Jacoba BORCHERDS born 30.3.1807 b 1 Charlotte Jeannette Plantaganet born 1.4.1824 baptised Kensington, Engeland 15.5.1824 b2 Alerta Planraganer born 9.12.1826 baptised Bengale b3 Thomas Peter Plantaganet born 29.12.1828 baptised Wynberg 17.2.1829 sterf: 12.12.1829 John Coote Field, boer op die plaas Brakfontein, Bredasdorp married Bredasdorp 4.9.1843 Elizabeth Catharina SWART born 6.6.1828 d.v. Hi Listers, Would anyone know if there was an Anglican Church in SWELLENDAM as early as 1860 and if so, where would the marriage and baptism records be kept.? Regards, Colin Mohr
Hello Please, does anyone have any record of a Catherine (or Catharine) Hall (born Mills) who came to South Africa from England in early-mid 1840's. She would have been aged about 30 at the time. That's all I know. I have checked NAAIRS and Ancestry24 and have not found anyone of that name who fits the bill - except possibly a Catherine Hall who was buried at Maitland Cemetery on 2 May 1896, but I would need more info than the burial notice shows to know if this was my Catherine. Thank you Mary

Well done Carol for doing that. I am sure that it is a huge task. I live in Ireland and how on earth does one start doing something like this? We have such beautiful old graveyards here and as far as I am aware no one has done this. The headstones are getting so old and becoming illegible and really believe someone should be doing it. I would be willing to do my local ones as far as possible but how do I start and are there any things I should look out for? I don't have any ancestors here but am certain people in other areas of the world would love the work done as much as I would love to have my own South African ancestors graves known. Is there any other area of South Africa where this has been done? I am from Durban but have my grandmother buried in Sabie and there must be some around Estcourt. Wishing you all the best in your indexing.
