Charles and Harry were brothers, Charles Jnr was better known as Lofty. He married Thelma Tate and they had a daughter Dawn Elizabeth Barkway (my fianc?'s mother) Lofty and Thelma divorced in 1947. I did find another divorce for Lofty in 1955 from a Gloria Donaldson born Bennett. When Lofty died he was married to an Elizabeth (I am yet to find her maiden name or who she is). Lofty (Charles jnr, my fianc?s grandfather) apparently had quiet a few children but none of the family know any of them. Harry and Marge had a son called Trevor (Trevor married Michele and they have 3 children, Trevor is now sadly deceased) Dawn never knew her father Lofty as he left when she was 18 months old. Lofty also had a son called Michael (not sure who the mother was) Harry and Marge actually adopted Michael as they found him in a home when he was 5 I think. Now Harry and Lofty's parents names were Charles and Jean. Charles did have a sister May Rita Barkway which may be the aunt you are thinking of. I am trying to find out if Charles and May had any other siblings and where they came from. I do have a photo of Lofty and Thelma at their wedding :) My fianc? was adopted out at birth and we have just recently found who his birth mother was (Dawn Elizabeth Barkway) they have now reunited but sadly Dawn knows nothing about the Barkways or her father. So in my search I have located Michele Barkway (Trevor's widow) and we are now in contact. I am now doing the family tree and trying for everyone as to be honest none of the Barkways know their own family history. I have also located May Rita Barkways daughter and granddaughter who are thrilled to find out about all of us and the other Barkways :) Thank you so much for your help, if you have any other info it would be fantastic. xx Regards, Storm O'Neill +27 (076) 764 2168 Mobile 085 400 8019 Fax [email protected] www.house-of-madison.com This message is private and confidential. They were still in Essex during the 1901 census, with sons Sidney b1892, Edward, William and Leonard. I think they came before 1912 because Sidney married Elizabeth Frances David (b 1889 - I have no other info at all on her but would really like some) and their son Sidney was born in 1912 (in SA as far as I know).? I don?t know where the daughter Ethel was during the 1901 census, but she also came to South Africa and was married to James Gwynn.? 3. Hi Mark, I too have drawn a blank on item 1 - I think the year must be wrong. Nothing in sailings, or consular or marine births for that year. Item 2: The following are passengers on ss GALEKA which sailed on 22 October 1904 from Southampton to Cape Town, but no sign yet of the husband. Mrs E.G. MANN - aged 38 Miss E. MANN - aged 14 Master S. MANN - aged 12 Master E. MANN - aged 8 Master W. MANN- aged 6 Master L. MANN - aged 3 Master E. MANN - aged 1 Let me know if you want the image, but it's rather large! The lists for that period seem vary scarce. I am trying to find: 1) George Carmichael born April 1912 on board ship (so I was told) but have found no other corroborating evidence. They were Scottish and the only "Carmichael" I can find is a Mrs. & Miss Carmichael out of Southampton in March 1912. No idea if it was them. I never knew the names of his parents or siblings, or where they came from. He married Phyllis Pretorius around 1935. If I don't find anything from passenger lists or other stuff about tyhem in the Cape, I'll have to hope the marriage certificate shows something. No reference to it in the archives that I can find though. The death notice might help too, and I have the reference to that, but I was still hoping for something from the ships lists. 2) The family of Ernest George Mann b1869/70 & Hannah Sophia Mann (neé Thompson - b1870) with their children. They were still in Essex during the 1901 census, with sons Sidney b1892, Edward, William and Leonard. I think they came before 1912 because Sidney married Elizabeth Frances David (b 1889 - I have no other info at all on her but would really like some) and their son Sidney was born in 1912 (in SA as far as I know). I don't know where the daughter Ethel was during the 1901 census, but she also came to South Africa and was married to James Gwynn. My main interest is their landing in SA, but all other relevant info will be gratefully received. With George Carmichael I know the way forward is probably to get the death notice, but I thought maybe someone could help with the Cape Town side. I believe Ernest George Mann would have worked for the post office when he came out here, as he was a linesman with the post office in England. I think several people are researching "Mann" families. If anyone is researching this particular one, please help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
