Marilyn Hi! This has been the pattern for a long time it gets "fixed" and a short while later it gives the error message again. It is no good some techie just clearing the blockage, what we want is a solution that will permanently fix the problem, even if it means going through thousands of lines of code; just imagine if a major insurance company or industrial giant had a similar problem, their staff would be working round the clock until it was sorted 'cos if they did'nt they would lose money! Like all South Africans I have a heritage that goes back many centuries and the search for family ancestors involves getting information from many sources, both private and state. You will appreciate that this is a mammoth task involving making contact with records services in many countries as my roots extend far and wide. The record services of many overseas countries are outstanding with vast amounts of information being available on-line, which makes the gathering of information much easier. Many of these records services are government owned and run and provide much more than mere indexes but access to images of the actual documents. I appreciate that our Country is not in the position at present to emulate these foreign record systems, given the constraints on the fiscus and the need to prioritise the type of access to National Archives, amid the many other important functions that your department has to deal with, but it makes it so much more important that the records that are supposedly available are not being withheld due to faulty systems, and in this regard I particularly refer to the NAAIRS system which has consistently had a problem over a considerable period of time. I am aware that I am not the only one experiencing such problems as the subject crops up all too frequently on a number of mailing lists and discussion groups I belong to in the Genealogical field. All too often in response to a query that the system is not working one gets answered by tactless and euphemistical assurances that a fix is imminent. As a South African it is frustrating but to the very many foreigners who are seeking information on their SA ancestors, a poor reflection of our Government efficiency and I have frequently had to defend our land with assurances that it will soon be rectified. This has been going on for a very long time and I cannot conceive that a competent programmer would not be able to sort out the problem of access. One is not always able to travel to the relevant archives on the off chance that some documentation may be available and therefore having the NAAIRS functioning properly cuts down considerably on my time and the precious time of the Archives staff when calling to view records that you know are there and you have the details of the records to give the staff. I am writing to you madam Minister in the hope that you would look into the matter and resolve the issue. I can assure you that there are many thousands of researchers both here and overseas that would rejoice that you fixed the problem. I thank you in anticipation of a solution Neville.J. Rasmussen N.J. Dear Minister L Xingwana, cc Portfolio Committe Arts and Culture DA spokesperson on Arts and Culture All national and international Rootsweb members Please could you urgently attend to the system failure of the NAAIRs website, as people nationally and internationally are not able to acces this site in order to trace their ancestors. At present I am not able to get onto this site, and apparently a problem with very limited intermittent access has persisted for at least a year according to national and international users of this site. At present this site is not accessible at all. A discussion online has been taking place amongst international members of rootsweb about the poor service from the South African National Archives NAAIRS site and about the inability to acces this site in order to trace their ancestors. This is poor service and a poor reflection of the SA national Archives to the nationally and internationally community and needs to be attended to as a matter of urgency. The public's access to information is being compromised , and finding information about ancestors is a very imortant matter. People in South Africans are well aware of the importance of ancestors. Many people have tried to make contact with NAAIRS often without any response, or in this case the complaint sent 23rd August 2010 and reply recieved 17th October 2010. 'We are very sorry about being disappointed by our system. Please keep on trying and someday you will be able to get on it and retrieve what you are looking for. Yours Sincerely Mologadi Mamabolo (Ms) Please see the content of my letter below sent to NAAIRS. In addition, the email to [email protected] is returned to me, Undeliverd Mail, it appears that this information on the website is incorrect and has not been updated.<[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table (in reply to RCPT TO command) I hope that you will attend to the system failure of the NAAIRS website and above web address as a matter of urgency. This was last year November?!?! I can only think that action will be forthcoming (maybe) if we all write to the minister under whom this falls. If the minister gets hundreds of mails complaining then maybe, just maybe, something will be done. Before retirement I was the IT operations manager for my company and I cannot believe that a competant programmer can't fix this problem in a reasonable timeframe. In MARCH 2010 The department issued a final report on what needs to be done to fix the information and archival systems in SA. amongst the 249 pages the following:- ...................Libraries and archives fulfil a very important function in any society. They contribute to personal empowerment and the improvement of individuals' lives and at a societal level they contribute to a culture of learning and skills development and the achievement of other national objectives. In South Africa library and archives face critical challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, inconsistent levels of service..................... ...................However, the shortage of resources and capacity at NARS is a serious concern. Furthermore, the workshop participants were of the opinion that many professionals who have substantial archival experience and skills are on the verge of retirement and that within a short while a generation of archival skills will have been lost. The transfer of these skills is an important aspect that needs attention................................... I will be writing to the minister (see below) as I doubt that Ms Mamabolo will be able to effect any change. I'll let everyone know if I get a response. Sent to [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]> Attention:NAAIRS I am having trouble getting onto the NAAIRS site, a problem also experienced by many other people around the world. This mail below from one of the many thousands of rootsweb members is a result of lengthy communications by users of this site around the world about the poor service and problematic system and lack of access to the NAAIRS site. Please could the comments by Mologadi Mamabolo (Ms)be clarified. What does 'someday' mean? Is the matter being attended to? This problem has existed for a long time. This is poor service and a poor reflection of the SA national Archives to the public nationally and internationally and needs to be attended to as a matter of urgency. The public's access to information is being compromised , and finding information about ancestors is a very imortant matter. People in South Africans are well aware of the importance of ancestors. Please could you advise me when the system will be upgarded / rectified for all those nationally and internationally who are trying to access NAAIRS in tracing their ancestors. Yours sincerely, Marilyn Lilley. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Colin Möhr" <[email protected]> To: "naairs" <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, October 27, 2010 3:41 PM Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] Fw: My reply from S.A. Dear Administrator, Herewith the gist of an answer received from your department by one of our list members. Most unsatisfacory and unacceptable! Perhaps you would like us to take the matter to the public at large? Please be so kind as to ensure the most senoir member of your staff advises the list of what is wrong and when it will be resolved. The NAAIRS site has been steadily sinking into the mire and repeated assurances from you that the matter will be addressed , have NOT materialized. I trust that this matter will command thev HIGHEST priority. Yours, Colin Mohr ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gwen Doyle" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, October 27, 2010 2:32 PM Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] My reply from S.A. William Allen born c 1842 in "Cape of Good Hope" married in Hillgrove, small gold mining town near Armidale, New South Wales in Australia in 1869. Can anyone please assist with names of William's parents or any other details? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards Judy
