    3. Hi there Kate I have found two Cemeteries in Rustenburg for you. Donkerhoek Cemetery and Nelson Mandela Road, Old Cemerery in Rustenburg. When you get there inquire where they are and I hope you find the grave and take photos for that lady. Enjoy your visit. I don't think a Death certificate would help in finding the grave site I have just arrived in South Africa and think the only thing to do is to go to Rustenburg myself, (if I can escape my family's Braais). I was wondering if any knows anything about any Rustenburg cemeteries used in 1949, for an Anglican burial or which church would have been attended by English protestants at that time. I have never been to Rustenburg, so any help, in trying to find Harold GODBOLD's grave, would be gratefully appreciated. Kind regards, Kate Crisp I met a lovely lady on the train to London recently, we started talking and she told me her father who suffered with chest problems, had been advised to emigrate with his family, (including her and her sister) to Rustenburg, just after the war. She remembers going to school in Rustenburg and has fond memories of her time in South Africa. She is a feisty, elderly lady, who lives in the UK and her equally elderly sister lives in the USA. Their one wish is to find their father's grave whilst they can still travel. She knows he was buried in Rustenburg, but can't remember which church or cemetery it was. I wondered if SKS could help? 3. Hi Kate, I tried sending you an email but your email address was rejected fro some reason. I live in SA. Try Ancestry24, http://ancestry24.com/ a South African geneology site with lots of information and only R195 subscription a year, very cheap compared to other international geneology sites. I would suggest that you contact Heather Mc Alistair who runs Ancestry24, I am sure she would be able to direct you further. 3. Thank you all, I am obviously having a senior moment. I ca only put it down to leaving a -3 UK to arriving in this heat, two family braais per day and an over dose of boerewors! I agree Death Notices are a wonderful source of information. What I meant to say is Barbara isn't looking for her family history, she only wants to do a pilgrimage to her father's grave whilst she and her sister are still mobile enough to do so. She is 84 and therefore it is quite an urgent search. She is a lovely lady and in the past visitors to South Africa have said they would help her, only to return to the UK saying they were too busy to look. I promised I would do my best and would like to keep my word. I have never been to Rustenburg and know nothing about it, which is why I turned to you all for advice, which has always been invaluable when I was looking for my own family history. I have found a phone number for an Anglican church in Rustenburg but they are not answering their phone, I will just keep trying. -----Original Message----- From: Kevin Baxter <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Mon, 29 Nov 2010 12:05 Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] Harold George GODBOLD died 8th May1949 Rustenburg Kate -- Unless someone else advises otherwise , I would suggest that you contact your nearest Anglican Church for the information . 3. Henry Edward Bartle Frere Mackenzie married Grace Winifred Winter (year unknown). They were my maternal grandparents. They had three children: Hester Mary (my mother), Edna Grace and Leslie James.   Both Henry and Grace died during the flu pandemic of 1918/1920. Their young children grew up in an orphanage in Cape Town. When Edna Grace Mackenzie left the orphanage, she lost contact with her siblings.   I am looking for any information on Edna Grace MacKenzie and/or her children/descendants.   At the time of his death, Henry MacKenzie was living at 9 Bath Road, Claremont.   I am also looking for any information on Henry’s wife, Grace Winifred Winter. What was her date of birth, who were her parents, did she have any siblings, etc.? I believe her family may have come from England, so there may be a passenger list with their names on it.   Thanks for your help!   Bernard Brown Dallas, Texas

    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] John Brown and Jemima Bagshaw
    2. Bernard Brown
    3. Hello   I have hit the proverbial brick wall and am hoping some kind person can shed some light on the problem.   My great great grandfather was John Brown (I have no birth, death or any other data on him). He married Jemima Ann Bagshaw on 30 September 1844, at St Georges Anglican Church in Cape Town.   Jemima Bagshaw was born on 17 June 1827. At the time of Jemima’s birth, the Bagshaws lived on Lemon Street, Stepney, London, England. She was baptized at St Mary Whitechapel, on 4 July 1827. She died on 29 June 1876 and is buried in Port Elizabeth (St Mary’s Cemetery, South End). She had remarried, and at the time of her death, her surname was Fenton.   I am hoping that someone can shed more light on John Brown, dates of birth/death, parents, siblings, etc.   I was told when I was very young that the family name was originally Le Brun, and that Le Brun had come from Paris, France. Could it be that John Brown’s father was Le Brun?   Any help would be greatly appreciated.   Bernard Brown Dallas, Texas

Possibly suffered from Cerebral Palsy, may have been in a home in the Plumstead area as from 1937 / 8 and lived prior to that in Salt River and Observatory. This information will complete the circle of that Gould family for my research. Many thanks William.

    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] James Kinnear ADAMSON & David Kinnear ADAMSON, brothers
    2. Pat Carson
    3. James Kinnear ADAMSON 1878-1956 was my grandfather. In 1901, at the age of 23, he sailed from Southampton to Durban on the RMS Scot. He does not reappear in Dundee until 1906 when he is listed in the Dundee Directory again, with his older brother David Kinnear ADAMSON 1877-1948, as Adamson Brothers, wholesale & retail stationers, agents for Smith Premier Typewriter. We believe that grandpa and his brother went to South Africa to seek their fortune (?!) and indeed family lore has it that they were doing fairly well. But the story goes that mother in Dundee was most distressed that her boys were so far away and summoned them home again. It is thought that, whilst in South Africa, they had a business in the literary field (books? stationery? typewriters?). They certainly had (owned? rented?) a property that they called Letham Villa – it is believed this property was in Durban. Pictures taken on the veranda of this property still exist – lovely ladies, those high, stiff collars the men favoured then and musical instruments (banjos, ukeleles) feature. And every man seemed to smoke a pipe. It may be that they kept turkeys or at least chickens – this photo is very indistinct. Another version of the story is that grandpa taught whilst in South Africa. He certainly taught commercial subjects for many years once he settled back home in Dundee – with his wife and family. Does anyone have any further information about these two young men? Would anyone like to speculate further about their sojourn in S Africa? My cousins and I do wonder what took two young Scotsmen to a place that was only just coming out of a major war. If we could be pointed in the direction of where to find further information, we would be so grateful! regards Pat Researching : ADAMSON, KINNEAR, STIRLING in Angus; KEY, FORD in Coastal Angus & Dundee; CONWAY, REILLY, BRADY in Ireland, Ayrshire & Dundee; FISHER in Ayrshire; NIC(H)OLSON in Speyside, Aberdeen & Dundee; MILLER in Dundee; DICKSON in Ireland & Dundee; PATERSON, FINDLAY, ORKNEY in Montrose & Dundee; JOHNSTON in Dundee

    3. My uncle John William (Jack) Jane was born in Wandsworth, Surrey, UK, in 1901. I have found him on the 1911 census, aged 10 and living with the rest of his family. However, after that he seems to disappear. No marriage or death has come to light, and an older cousin always said he seemed to disappear. No-one knew where he was. Going through immigration lists I have found a Mr. J.W. Jane on the Glengorm Castle leaving Plymouth for Mozambique in January 1929. He seems to be with a group, all carpenters bound for Cape Town. His last address is just given as Director of Sea Transport Admiralty. Assisted passage? Is this he, and do I have relations in Cape Town?? Is it possible to find census details for Cape Town in the 1930’s, and also marriage and death records? Thanks for any assistance. Maisie
