    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] George Nicholson 1821
    2. New Pip
    3. Hello, this is my first posting to the list. I do hope someone out there can help me. I am looking for George Nicholson (Esq), he was born about 1821 - I know not where, I cannot find any birth/Bap for him in England. From his marriage certificate I know that his father was also George, a Gentleman. I have found him on the 1841 census aged 20 living alone in Westminster, London an Apprentice Solicitor! He then gets married in Dec 1841 to Ellen Wilkes in Ware, Hertfordshire, England and is of full age and a Gentleman. Their 1st child Ellen Maria was born in 1844 Cape of Good Hope, What I would like to know is "When and how did they get there, where did they live there and is there a Baptism for Ellen"? They were obviously going backwards and forwards as the 2nd daughter Edith was born in England in 1847, so are there any passenger lists? In 1894 Edith travelled to New York on a ship called "Paris" she was 48. In 1900 aged 52 she is in Multnomah, Oregon. Seems she never got married and never came back.. The 3rd daughter Georgina, my Great Grandmother was also born in The Cape of Good Hope in 1850/1, someone kindly found me her Baptism which was in the Cathedral Church on 20th July 1851, abode Rondebosch, the witnesses were two females Anne and Maria Nicholson ............. are they sisters of George? On Georgina's marriage certificate in 1871 she states that her father George is a Solicitor, I can find no evidence of George living in England at any time since the 1841 census, there are none of the family anywhere here on the 51 census and by the 61 his wife and 3 daughters are with her mother and there they stay. No sign of George!! I hope I haven't been too long winded and that someone somewhere might just know something ............. anything. Thank you in anticipation, Diana

    3. Fr: James Cole-Rous To: Henri Fortuin There are two page lists of Leipoldt on Ancestry24.com. I saw a listing for DONGES First Name: THEODOR AMADEUS LEIPOLDT on the second page. You may want to explore the Leipoldt name on Ancestry24.com. I found many good connections to my own family there. 3. Thanks Heather! So very kind. It's fortunate that they live in Pretoria.... I'm trying to get her to go there as I only managed to scratch the surface of the BROWNE files when I visited there a couple of times...it was unfortunate that the friend I was staying with on both occasions of my visits to South Africa is totally unsympathetic towards my wanting to spend time at the archives; she can see no point to family history whatsoever (although her paternal lineage in Northumbria is possibly very extensive...she emigrated to South Africa with her parents at the age of 5!! It's strange, three of my closest friends are totally opposed to my interest in family history. best wishes, Tombi. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Heather MacAlister - Ancestry 24" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, January 08, 2011 6:42 AM Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] Fw: A bit of help please! > Tombi > > You need to search with surname only to get better results > > > ROLLANDI, MARCELLO > > Surname: ROLLANDI > > Collection: Transvaal Deceased Estates Index 1855 - 1976 > > > > ROLLANDI, ENRICO GIOVANNI UMBERTO > > Surname: ROLLANDI > > Collection: Transvaal Deceased Estates Index 1855 - 1976 > > Regards > Heather > > Heather MacAlister > Channel Manager > Tel:021 468 8957 > Fax:+27 (0)86 581 0390 > www.ancestry24.co.za > Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/ancestry24 > Skype: Ancestry24 > Facebook: Ancestry24 > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Tombi > Peck > Sent: 07 January 2011 09:34 PM > To: South Africa Cape Town > Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] Fw: A bit of help please! > > > ----- > > Hi all you wonderful listers (yes, I am buttering you up, but it is true!) > > My NEWEST cousin (I did have her in the file, but we've only got to know > one another over the last week or so) has asked me to look up information > on her husband's parents and grandparents.... > > I've tried Ancestry....didn't find anything there; tried the IGI, wasn't > successful there, looked on NAAIRS, haven't found anything helpful there!! > > Rita's husband has the following information on his family.... > > Details: > MARCELLO ROLLANDI married to CATERINA ROLLANDI ( nee RICOBALDI) - Tex's > maternal grandparents. > JAMES CHARLES COOPER married to ANNIE MATILDA COOPER ( nee STEIGER) - > Tex's paternal grandparents. 2. Tombi Peck
    3. ----- Hi all you wonderful listers (yes, I am buttering you up, but it is true!) My NEWEST cousin (I did have her in the file, but we've only got to know one another over the last week or so) has asked me to look up information on her husband's parents and grandparents.... I've tried Ancestry....didn't find anything there; tried the IGI, wasn't successful there, looked on NAAIRS, haven't found anything helpful there!! Rita's husband has the following information on his family.... Details: MARCELLO ROLLANDI married to CATERINA ROLLANDI ( nee RICOBALDI) - Tex's maternal grandparents. JAMES CHARLES COOPER married to ANNIE MATILDA COOPER ( nee STEIGER) - Tex's paternal grandparents. (Steigers were from Germany, then came to SA? ARTHUR EDWARD COOPER married to ANGELINA ERNESTINA - Tex's father and mother married in Pretoria, SA Apologies, I have no dates for anything - Tex's maternal grandparents came from Italy to SA before 1912 - that is about all I know! His parents were born and died in South Africa. Many thanks, Best wishes, Tombi Peck

    1. Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] AUGUSTYN
    2. Paul le Roux
    3. Dear Jan and other listers, Although I am not researching the AUGUSTYN family myself, I did in the past help someone with their research into this family. According to the SA Genealogies Vol 1, the "stamvader" was Jan Heymerik AUGUSTYN * Amsterdam 1784, teacher + Versefontein, Calvinia 22.10.1862. His parents were Jan AUGUSTYN and Johanna HEYMERIK. He married Johanna Maria VAN OMMEN, daughter of David VAN OMMEN and Wanderina GEERLING on 1.3.1818 in the Lutheran Church, Cape Town. I will send a scan of the relevant pages from SAG to your private e-mail. I know there are various AUGUSTYN estate files in the Cape Archives and these appear to be centred around Calvinia, Fraserburg, Beaufort West and Sutherland. As to your hypothesis of a slave origin, I doubt that this is correct but, as I have said, I have not researched this family very well. There were to my knowledge no caucasian slaves brought to the Cape. All slaves were from Africa, the East and possibly one or two South American natives. What did happen is that with the various wars between Poland and Russia, there was a displacement of persons (refugees) to Germany and further as the economy of Western Europe was in a far better state than that of Eastern Europe, many young persons went to (especially) Holland in search of work. These persons invariably entered into contracts of employment with the Dutch East India Company. The fact that Jan and Johanna married in the Lutheran Church could be indicative of a link, in either family and possibly in a previous generation, to German (and / or Polish) ancestry. You will find that slaves are more prevalent in the maternal lines. Regards Paul LE ROUX Paarl LE ROUX x STEMMET MILNS x SANDS
