    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] THE NATAL MERCURY, MON, JUNE 12, 1922
    2. Tara Norton
    3. Hello fellow listers I went in search of newspaper clippings pertaining to my 3rd great grandfather in the basement of the Bessie Head Library in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and located the following which I hope may be of help to his descendants (and other researchers) in years to come: THE NATAL MERCURY MONDAY, JUNE 12, 1922 96th Birthday. ------ DURBAN RESIDENT'S LONGEVITY ------ Veteran of Crimean War. ------ A Peep into the Past. ------ ("Natal Mercury" Special.) Residing in the Y.M.C.A. Huts, at the Beach, Durban is a veteran soldier and colonist named Lewis Goldsmith Lester, who celebrated his 96th birthday on Sunday. His life story is one of service to the Empire, for he joined the British Army as a young man, and was with the Colours in the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny, not to mention other punitive engagements and early Native wars in this country. Until recently Mr. Lester was very healthy considering his age - he was operated on when he was 92 years of age by the late Dr. Milner Smythe - and retained all his faculties, but now his strength is failing. A "Mercury" representative called on Mr. Lester last week and had the opportunity of chatting with him of events which but for history would be forgotten by most of the inhabitants of the world to-day. Naturally after the passage of so many years the veteran soldier is unable to give a coherent account of his stirring adventures in the early nineteenth century, but he recalls with pride the fact that he was with the British troops in the Crimea, and in the Indian Mutiny, and he speaks with old British soldier's traditional LOVE AND RESPECT of Florence Nightingale. Mr. Lester was born in Ireland on June 11, 1826, in the reign of King George IV., and as a young man he joined the 41st Light (Welsh) Regiment. He was drafted with his regiment to India, subsequently going to Mauritius. When the Crimean War broke out in 1853 his regiment was transferred to the scene of operations, and he went through the heavy fighting and hardships associated with that campaign. There was little respite for the British Tommy in those days, and no sooner was the Crimean War over than Lester found himself back again in India, where the rebellious outbreak of the native troops was threatening the safety of the Empire. After the Indian Mutiny Lester left the Army and enjoyed a well-deserved furlough with his relatives in Ireland. He secured a free passage to the Cape, and carried with him letters of recommendation to the High Commissioner and other British officers. He could not find employment in Capetown, and went on to Port Elizabeth and East London. He was given an appointment in the Customs office at the latter town, which was then only a collection of wood houses, and wattle and daub huts. He was at East London in the late 'fifties, and apparently had all sorts of duties to perform, for in his diary he mentions the difficulties of guarding the stores in the open from thieving Natives; he also writes of the arrival of emigrant ships from the Homeland, and the hazardous manner in which the emigrants had to wade from the ship to the beach. One such ship brought out 300 Irish girls, and a number of married men and women and their families, while another brought mostly Germans. About this time Lester records that the Natives in a settlement not far from East London were proving troublesome. They were influenced by a Native girl princess, known as "Nonqausi," who prophesied that if all whites, men, women and beasts, were driven into the sea, the DEAD WOULD RISE and the aged would take on a new lease of life. Not only did she prophesy, but she urged her warriors to act, with the results that British authorities decided to place her under restraint. A British officer was sent up from Capetown, and East London called for a volunteer to accompany him. Lester, who had been promoted to Chief Constable and Court Messenger, volunteered, and with the officer sallied forth and captured the youthful bloodthirsty princess, who was taken away by the authorities. She was apparently well treated and educated, for when she returned to the East London district she was, in Mr. Lester's words, "a perfect lady, speaking English well, and dressed up to the nines, as they say." She died not bear any ill-will, and presented Mrs. Lester with a valuable gold brooch. Meanwhile Lester had begun rearing a family, and finding it hard to earn sufficient in East London, he migrated to Kingwilliamstown, where for some time he won a living for himself and his family by going into Native territory and purchasing cattle, which he marketed in Kingwilliamstown. He suffered a grievous bereavement in the loss of his wife, and, tiring of the life in Kingwilliamstown, he moved on to Pondoland in 1870, obtaining a farm. He married again, and was doing well, when the Natives rebelled in Pondoland, and he again donned uniform. This time as a volunteer. His eldest boys also volunteered, and one accompanied an officer on A SCOUTING EXPEDITION. The officer was killed, and the boy Lester rode back, warning all the settlers on his route. He carried the warning into Umtata, and was considered to have saved that village from disaster. In this rebellion Mr. Lester's eldest son saved the life of a British officer by shooting down a Native warrior who was in the act of putting an assegai into him. Mr. Lester was a quartermaster attached to the old Cape Mounted Rifles. One day, in riding a fractious horse out of a laager, he had his foot crushed. The doctor recommended amputation, but the quartermaster decided to retain his injured limb, and although he was on crutches for some time, he performed his military duties. He was afterwards certified unfit and discharged. After the Pondoland rebellion, Mr. Lester returned to his farm, but lost all his stock owing to rinderpest. He came to Durban with the object of getting a farm, and has remained here since. Mr. Lester was no doubt entitled to a pension when he was certified unfit for military service, but he states that he declined to apply for one as he was fairly well off then. Later, when he fell on hard times, he sent in an application, which was unsuccessful, and to-day he is only in receipt of £2 per month, half of which is contributed by the Commanding Officer of the D.L.I. Recently his cheques had been marked "Pauper's relief," which has hurt the old man and his relatives, for they feel that if only for his services as a soldier he is entitled to some pension in his old age. It does certainly seem unfair that the small amount that is paid to Mr. Lester should be labelled "pauper's relief," especially as the injury he received while on active service in Pondoland must have handicapped his chance of earning sufficient to put something by for his old age. Mr. Lester was married three times, and had five children, who are living in different parts of the Union and Australia. He is living with his youngest son, who is now 52 years of age, and has a family of his own. Boy! you have died as we would have you die. Yes, I am proud, my son; I shall not weep, But, ah! within the hours of broken sleep I see your dear, loved form, your eyes, your hair, And clench my arms to clasp and hold you there; Then wake and know the glory you have won. Inserted by her loving Mother and Sister. SCHMIDT. - At "The Delta," Bergville, on February 24th, 1918, Martha Louise Elizabeth SCHMIDT (Martie), aged 26 years. "Through the Cross to the Crown." 82 OBITUARY ------X------ REV. FATHER DE LACEY ------X------ >From Our Own Correspondent. ------X------ ESTCOURT, February 28 The passing of the Rev. Father John DE LACEY, O.M.I. (briefly reported in the "Witness" yesterday), marks the closing of a career of great activity and usefulness in his Church. He will be remembered with kindliest feelings by many old pupils as the founder of St. Charles' College, where the MARIST Brothers are today continuing the fine work which owes its inception to him. Born of sturdy Tiperary stock, he came to South Africa as a deacon forty-nine years ago, and was ordained by Bishop JOLIVET. In 1876 he laboured in Pretoria; thence he was transferred to Johannesburg in 1887, where he started the flourishing mission of to-day. During the Boer War he was removed to Pretoria by the Dutch military authorities, and in "Pretoria from Within" (H.J. BATTS), the following mention of him is found:- "Father DE LACEY, of the Roman Catholic Church, managed to get out (to the camp at Watervall) more often, and on other days than Sundays. He simply insisted on going, and more than once went out without a pass. He was able now and again to bluff the guards, in order to get in to minister the sick and dying. His opportunities, however, were short-lived, but as long as he could he did grand service, though, to his horror, many Roman Catholics were allowed to died and be buried without the attendance of a clergyman, either during their dying moments or at the internments in the burial plot. The (Dutch) Government committed the grave mistake of sending the eminent Father over the border. They saw it when too late, and wiring to Delagoa Bay, whither he had gone, offered him permission to return, which he declined." He was the "Prefect Apostolique" of the Church, and the Father Superior of the Johannesburg Mission from 1897 to 1902, and laboured also at Pietersberg, Klerksdorp, and Potchefstroom. Failing health compelled the relinquishment of his more active work, and about eighteen months ago he came to the Augustinian Convent in Estcourt. He was stricken down last Friday, and from Sunday was unconscious until the end came on Tuesday evening last, when, after great suffering, borne with fortitude and resignation, and closely clasping his beloved crucifix, he calmly passed away to "where, beyond these voices, there is peace." The funeral obsequies were attended by all the Sisters of the Convent, with the pupils and staff of the school, and several residents of the town, and were conducted by Father SCHAVE, the Superior from Johannesburg, assisted by Father BOLD. Beautiful floral tributes were sent from Mr. and Mrs. SOUFFERT and Philippe, Mrs. Edwin WOODS, Mr. and Mrs. F. HAMM, Mr. and Mrs. DRUMMOND, and Mr. and Mrs. PETTERVILLE. The coffin was of solid oak, with silver fittings, and bore the inscription, "Father John DE LACEY, 72 years." He was laid to rest in the lovely little cemetery of the Convent with every manifestation of sorrow and deep respect. To his surviving sisters in Ireland the sympathy of all who knew and honoured their revered brother is extended in their loss. ------X------ MRS. J.J. HODSON ------X------ As already reported in the "Witness" on Friday last, one of our oldest colonists passed peacefully away on Thursday afternoon at Caversham - Mrs. HODSON, the wife of Mr. J.J. HODSON, J.P., of Caversham, Lidgetton. To very many the news will come as a great shock, for of her it may truly be said that she was beloved by all who knew her. Her health for some time has not been good, and her advanced age - well into the eighties - made it clear lately that the end would not be far off. It will be remembered that about two years ago he had pleasure in recording the celebration of the diamond wedding of Mr. and Mrs. HODSON. Of over fifty descendants, three only have pre-deceased them - the last being a grandson killed in Flanders, whose death we noted a few months ago. Their eleven children are all living. Their eldest son is farming in the Free State, another in Rhodesia, and the remainder of the family is scattered about in various parts of Natal - one being Magistrate at Mpofana. The funeral took place at Caversham on Friday afternoon, and was largely attended by relatives and friends. To Mr. HODSON and the sorrowing children and grandchildren we beg to offer our sincere sympathy. ------X------ MR. PAUL WOLHUTER ------X------ We regret to announce the death, which occurred suddenly near Greytown on Saturday morning, of Mr. Paul WOLHUTER, an old and respected resident of the district. Mr. WOLHUTER, who had reached the aged of 65, appeared to be in his customary good health and spirits when he retired on Friday night, but was found dead in his bed by his wife on Saturday morning. The deceased was the fourth son of the late Mr. F.M. WOLHUTER, one of the original Voortrekkers, who, it is interesting to remember, was the owner of the site on which the present General Post Office in Maritzburg is situated. The deceased leaves a wife and son, and his sister is Mrs. G. LAMOND, of this City. His son, Mr. Louis WOLHUTER, of the Resident Magistrate's Staff at Vryheid, left that town for Greytown immediately on hearing of his father's death, but unfortunately he missed the railway connection, and was compelled to remain in Maritzburg yesterday. The remains were removed from the deceased's farm "Kleinfontein", to Greytown, and were buried from the Dutch Reformed Church yesterday afternoon.
