    3. Yes, thanks Heather, I've had a good search through the UK National Archives site. I found his attestation document there. He was at Anglesea barracks in Portsea in the 1861 census, so the regiment must have gone to the Cape sometime after that date. I found the regiment's broad movements on another site, only the years, nothing more specific. regards, Barry

    3. Hi Gary You can get a copy of the Roberts marriage certificate (transcript) for free on www.ancestry24.co.za http://ancestry24.com/search-item/?id=C295116. Unfortunately birth registration was not compulsory in the Cape until 1895 so unfortunately you won't find a copy of her birth certificate Hope this helps Regards Heather Heather MacAlister Channel Manager E  heather@ancestry24.co.za T  +27 (021) 468 8957 F +27 (0)86 5810390   Join us on Facebook  twitter.com/ancestry24  | Skype: ancestry24 7th Floor , 11  Adderley Street, Cape Town, 8000  |  www.ancestry24.co.za -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gary clough Sent: 10 April 2012 11:23 AM To: SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] Robert Joseph Deeker Robert Joseph Deeker and Hannah Clark, These are my gt gt g'parents and from what I can find were both born in England (Robt abt 1812 in London, Hannah in Warwickshire abt 1808) and married in Cape Town in abt 1830, They had 10 children there before moving to Victoria, Aust in 1853. I am particularly interested in getting a copy of their marriage cert and their dtr Annie's birth cert (my gt g'mother). She was born abt 1843 in Cape Town. These certs partly to establish the spelling of their names - there has been some uncertainty about it being Deeker or Decker, and also if they have more about their background. Any dates are approx, because the only source is their death certs in Victoria. I would like to know about their life in SA to get a more complete idea of them. Any help or guidance would be great. 1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] THE NATAL MERCURY, TUE, JUNE 3, 1924
    2. Tara Norton
    3. THE NATAL MERCURY TUESDAY, JUNE 3, 1924 ------ VETERAN PASSES ------ Within Two Years of his 100th Birthday ------ The death has occurred in Durban, within two years of his 100th birthday, of Mr. Lewis Goldsmith Lester, a veteran soldier and colonist. His life story is one of service to the Empire, for he joined the British Army as a young man, and was with the colours in the Crimean War and Indian Mutiny, not to mention other punitive engagements and early Native wars in this country. Until a couple of years ago Mr. Lester enjoyed very good health, but latterly his strength has been failing. It may be mentioned that he was operated on at the age of 92. The late Mr. Lester was born in Ireland on June 11, 1826, in the reign of King George IV., and had had the unique distinction of living under five separate rulers on the throne of Great Britain. It will be seen that he was on the eve of his 98th birthday when he passed to the Great Beyond. As a young man, he joined the 41st Light (Welsh) Regiment. He was drafted with his regiment to India, subsequently going to Mauritius. When the Crimean War broke out in 1853 his regiment was transferred to the scene of operations, and he went through the heavy fighting and hardships associated with that campaign. There was little rest for the British soldier in those days, and no sooner was the war over than Lester found himself back again in India, where the rebellious outbreak of the Native troops was threatening the safety of the Empire. After the Indian Mutiny had been quelled, Mr. Lester left the Army, and after a well-earned holiday with his relatives in Ireland, he secured a free passage to the Cape. He could not, however, find employment in Capetown, and after journeying to Port Elizabeth, eventually secured an appointment at East London, which was then only a collection of wood houses and wattle and daub huts. Here he was given an appointment in the Customs Office - this being in the late fifties. Later he was appointed Chief Constable and Court Messenger. From East London, Mr. Lester journeyed to Kingwilliamstown, where he conducted the business of a cattle dealer, and in 1870 he bought a farm in Pondoland. Mr. Lester participated in the Pondoland Rebellion with the Cape Mounted Rifles, and after its conclusion he came to Durban, where he spent the remaining years of his life. Mr. Lester was married three times, and had five children, residing with his youngest son, now 54 years of age, at the time of his death. 3. An ancestor served as a private with the 2nd Batt., 11th (North Devonshire) Regiment of Foot, and according to his army attestation documents spent 3 years 9 months in "the Cape of Good Hope" (possibly also Natal). That period was sometime between 1861 and 1865; in 1865 the unit moved from South Africa to "China" (Hong Kong) before returning to South Africa in 1866. Are there any records telling how the Devonshire Regiment was deployed in South Africa in that period 1861 to 1865? thanks, Barry

    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] THE NATAL MERCURY, MON, JUNE 12, 1922 - Lewis Goldsmith LESTER in the Crimea???
    2. David Bennett
    3. Dear Brian, Fay and Tara, As one who has an interest in Military History, I also found the Natal Mercury article written in 1922, about  Lewis Goldsmith LESTER, who apparently fought in the Crimean War (1854-56) and in the Indian Mutiny (1857-59), with the 41st Light (Welsh) Regiment, very interesting. And so, I forwarded the article (fully, as published) to a colleague of mine in England who is one of the world experts in the Crimean War, being a published author on the War, a specialist collector of Crimean War medals, and an advisor to the BBC on films made by the BBC on the War. He replied to me, advising that there is NO RECORD in the officlal medals rolls for either the Crimean, or the Indian Mutiny campaigns for a man by the name of Lewis Goldsmith Lester. As I live in Durban myself, I was quite excited at the thought that, as recently as 1922, we had a Crimean War veteran living in Durban!!! But according to the records, there is no such a man on the medal rolls, as I have said. Of course there are many reasons as to why his name was not there. Perhaps he was 'stretching the truth' when interviewed by the Mercury. Perhaps he fought under another name (as men sometimes did in those days, for whatever reason). Perhaps he was never there. Perhaps he WAS there, and his name was not included in the records, for some reason. Far be it for me to cast doubt on the story, as I looked at it only as an outsider, who looked at it based purely on the facts stated in the article. But I thought that in the best interests of historical accuracy, that you should be aware of the fact that this name does not appear in the Medal Rolls. Maybe you have further information, details, or facts which can assist in clearing up the claims made by Mr. Lester?
