    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] Pickersgill family in Cape Town between 1870 and 1897
    2. angela middleton
    3. I am looking for this family who were from England.  John Pickersgill and his wife Mary Jane (formerly Orange).  They may have married in Cape Town as I have been unable to find a marriage in England.  Their children were born in Cape Town, Ethel in 1874,  Maud 1878 Harry 1879, (I have Harry's baptism certificate from St.Mary's Woodstock).  Mary and the children left Cape Town on the SS Nubian in 1882 and I believe a fourth child was born on the voyage back to London and named Nuby after the ship.   John stayed on in Cape Town and died there in 1897.  I would like to know if a marriage took place in Cape Town, whether the other children were baptised in St. Mary's Woodstock, and what happened to John between the years 1882 and 1897.  Did he start another family?  I believe there was a Pickersgill descendent in Cape Town listed in the phone book in 1997.  Is this a desendent of John?   Any help much appreciated.  Angela.

    3. Thank you Heather!!! Would you possibly be able to check on banns for a marriage on 5th September 1820 at St Pancras Old Church, London, ELIZA GILES to William BECKWITH. I have just drawn a blank trying to find his background as he just doesn't appear on the 1851 Census, was not living with his wife Eliza and then on the 1861 Census - she was a widow. Just hoping there may be a clue in the banns..... Thanks again Dianne -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Heather MacAlister - Ancestry 24 Sent: 11 April 2012 11:56 AM To: south-africa-cape-town@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] BURTON-SCOTT Hi Gwen and Dianne London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921 about Apline Burton Name: Apline Burton of Edgeware Road Spouse Name: Charles Scott servant of Edgeware Road Spouse Age: Full Age Record Type: Marriage Event Date: 12 Aug 1850 Parish: Paddington Green St Mary Borough: Westminster Father Name: Edward Burton - ornamental plasterer Spouse Father Name: Thomas Scott - labourer Register Type: Parish Register Regards Heather Heather MacAlister Channel Manager E  heather@ancestry24.co.za T  +27 (021) 468 8957 F +27 (0)86 5810390 Join us on Facebook  twitter.com/ancestry24  |  skype.com/ancestry24 7th Floor , 11  Adderley Street, Cape Town, 8000  |  www.ancestry24.co.za -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of DI - DD KITS Sent: 11 April 2012 11:34 AM To: south-africa-cape-town@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] BURTON-SCOTT Hi Gwen I am so excited about this information!!!! Thank you, thank you!Let me fill in the background... Appeline(16) was sent out (with her sister Mary Anne -15) with the Childrens Friend Society - arriving in Cape 1837 to be apprenticed to John Barry - where she worked as their housemaid. Mary Anne worked for Thomas Barry. They were not orphans - apparently wrote home often and heard from family regularly. The family must have been destitute for the two girls to be in a workhouse....but the girls were educated! I found the record of Charles and Apline + Eliza returning to the Cape - departing from London 14th August 1850. Never thought to look in the UK records for the birth or their marriage! So she was pregnant and they decided to go back to England for the birth and to get married??? Why - she was a housemaid and 30 yrs old? Was this not quite an expensive exercise - travel in 1850? Did the Barry's pay for this? She was obviously close to them as John Barry Snr and Letitia were witnesses to two of the subsequent births of children... I had the names of her parents in her late baptism 25th September 1854.... also a bit strange. I found Edward (ornamental plasterer) and wife Sarah on the 1851 Census in Paddington - 52 North Wharf Road. Thank you once again....So interesting..... 3. Robert Joseph Deeker and Hannah Clark, These are my gt gt g'parents and from what I can find were both born in England (Robt abt 1812 in London, Hannah in Warwickshire abt 1808) and married in Cape Town in abt 1830, They had 10 children there before moving to Victoria, Aust in 1853. I am particularly interested in getting a copy of their marriage cert and their dtr Annie's birth cert (my gt g'mother). She was born abt 1843 in Cape Town. These certs partly to establish the spelling of their names - there has been some uncertainty about it being Deeker or Decker, and also if they have more about their background. Any dates are approx, because the only source is their death certs in Victoria. I would like to know about their life in SA to get a more complete idea of them. Any help or guidance would be great. 3. One can get a copy of the service record of anyone who served in the SA forces. They are not the fastsest when it comes to a reply but eventually you will get all they have in their records on a particular serviceman. I even got the pay records of my dad however I also got the records of another servicman with the same surname mixed in with it so I suspect that some of the older records may have got a bit mixed up in the various moves the documentation made when it was consolidated in Pretoria. I sent them and e-mail and they replied asking for a postal address so if you include it with your initial requsts it may save some time Below is the intro found on the website. It looks as if it is only the airforce but in fact the info is for all service arms.
