    3. This document suggests that "Ntlaza Mission" might be one of four in that diocese, but I think ST. BARNABAS MISSION, NTLAZA is the likely one. C HOLY CROSS MISSION D ST. BARNABAS MISSION, NTLAZA E ST. CUTHBERT'S MISSION, TSOLO F ST.MARK'S MISSION Dates in this document would seem to span the years in which they might have married (say from about 1890 onwards), he having been born about 1870. http://www.historicalpapers.wits.ac.za/inventory/AB1653.php I also found that NTLAZA, Ngqeleni, Cape has an alternative spelling, "NTHLAZA" rgds, Barry

    3. I agree with Derek Pratt, that number will be an estate file number. His death notice for probate does however give the place where they were married as "Ntlaza Mission, District of Ngqueland" There are a load of untranscribed church records on FamilySearch, so one could browse to try and find that parish, the correct time span, and that particular marriage record. It would help to know approximately when they were married, ie. the birthdate of their first child would help. Barry

    3. Dear Alex, The use of ‘Wood’ as a middle name will almost certainly be as a result of Robert Godlonton’s close friendship with George Wood. His full name was George Alfred Wood but the Alfred was seldom used. He was born in Kent, England on 1 May 1805. He emigrated to South Africa with Sephton’s Party of 1820 Settlers (often known as the ‘Salem’ Party as that is where they settled initially). George, then a boy of 15, was indentured to Richard Smith. Not long after arrival he absconded from Smith and was taking in by John Thackeray who had his apprenticeship ceded to him. He began helping the Thackeray brothers, John and William in their wagon-making business. In 1823 George Wood began trading with John Thackeray, travelling around the Eastern Cape, called ‘Kaffirland’ at the time. George and John also hunted together and when John was killed by an elephant George continued trading on his own. He was clearly a highly intelligent and enterprising young man. On 6Jul 1826 he married Susannah Garnett and they went on to have 16 children - clearly also very successful in that area too! George bought up property (the farms ‘Barville Park’ and ‘Thornhill’ are two I know of. He became a very wealthy man. His estate when he died on 1 Nov 1884 was valued at over 264,000 pounds which was an enormous sum at the time. He was a devoted member and supporter of the Wesleyan Church, laid the foundation stone of the Wesleyan High School for Girls (in Grahamstown) on 8 Feb 1882, He was for 18 years a member of the Albany Divisional Disional Council and became a member of the Legislative in 1862 (the fore-runner of the parliament). He was also Mayor of Grahamstown. He and Robert Godlonton were close friends and both played cricket together and were both members of the Wesleyan Church. There was no marriage between the Godlonton and Wood families but I am sure the ‘Wood’ name was used in honour of their friendship. George retired from business because of ill-health, blindness and deafness. The reason I know a lot about George Wood is because one of my close friends, Stewart Percival Wood, who died in 2015, was a direct descendant of George and I researched the family for him. I have no ‘Wood’ connections. I hope this helps. If you need more on the Wood line let me know. I was pleased to learn your line of descent via Robert Godlonton alias Robert Duckworth-Ford. I have his first wife as Marion Emmeline Eliza Purdon (Aug 1873-3 Mar1911). I was unaware of a second marriage to Josephine Ellis in 1908. Perhaps you could fill me in a bit more about that. 3. There was a Wood family that was close to the Godlonton family at some point. When Robert Godlonton, first born of Benjamin D'Urban and Flora Adelaide Godlonton restyled himself as Robert A. Duckworth-Ford in 1901 and married Josephine Ellis in Jan 1908 in Kentucky, USA, Pendleton County, they subsequently had three children. 3. On Family Search I have found a Form of Information of Death for William Henry Waller who died, age 57, April 9, 1924, buried New Cemetery, Johannesburg. He was a Prison warder, retired on a pension, born in England, married. Informant was D.M. Lundin, Lundir?? How can I find more information? His burial - I couldn’t find a New Cemetery? Would his pension records still exist? He was living at 179 Ferreira Street, Johannesburg - what kind of area was that? I’m just trying to eliminate him as a possible for my great grandfather William Robert (known as William Henry) Waller, last known in Kokstad in 1885 where his son is baptized. He was in the Cape Infantry. His wife and children return to England by 1889. I have evidence that suggests he did not die until at least the 1920’s. Thank you for any suggestions. 3. Looking for the baptism of Lily Wallace about 1903, on the off-chance that she had been baptized in the same parish, I browsed the untranscribed baptisms of Cape Town, Woodstock, St Mary from 1902 through to 1906.... but didn't find her. Of course she might have been baptized later, or in another parish.....but I think she'll only be found by browsing the images here's the link to the last image in that volume that I browsed.
