If he was German by birth but became british he most likely followed this route as those nations were not on best of terms in that period. Hello: From the small bit I have looked at elsewhere, many people from Germany went to England, stayed there until they got their new papers, i.e., became 'British' again, and then left either London or Southampton to South Africa.
