Further: http://www.blueplaques.co.za/content/st-marys-less-jeppestown http://www.heritageportal.co.za/forum/st-marys-less-jeppestown-0 With regards other info: As you have it [Parish: St. Mary’s Jeppestown Pretoria]: As far as I know, there is no 'Jeppestown' in or near Pretoria. There is the [St. Mary's the Less, Jeppestown] church, on the URLs given, it also shows you exactly where to find it. The church looks closed up most of the time. Jeppestown is at the west end of Jules Street. St. Mary's the Less in Jeppestown, is the oldest church and the second oldest building in Joburg. Address: 39-41 Park Street, Jeppestown. So you not want to be looking immediately in Pretoria any more, it is all happing around Jules Street. [^^^1]: [William Garrity birth: 1884 death: 1885 Chorlton, Lancashire, England]: With regards my post yesterday, to take my own advise, keep in mind here, the DoD is the given value, so the DoB is the calc value. 1885-1=1884. You will need to check the originals to see if it is actually 1 year or 1 month ?. But the census is also the place to go. Also, it was probably William Arthur Garrity name that brought you here. You need to re-access this whole link etc. [Lilian Sampson (Williams) Garrity died on a Sunday at 58 years old]: You can note that the DoD being the 30-07-1950 is in fact a Sunday !!!. With regards another address given: [Sandilane Rd, Malvern East]: This is a typo that should read: Sandilands Rd, Malvern East. Sandilands Rd is just off the east end of Jules Street that becomes a sort of fork, sort of straight into Geldenhuis Rd which becomes Cydonia Rd, which as I have said, will run past the Lilian Sampson Garrity grave at Primrose Cemetery, and the right fork is Stanhope Rd. Past this into Google Maps: Sandilands Road, Malvern East, Germiston, Gauteng search field and press enter. It is one block up parallel to Geldenhuis Rd. I went back to [3 Fourth Street, Malvern, Jhb]. I did a better check. I also checked the back road being David Street which is actually the original entrance for two houses which also have an entrance in 4th Street. So the house I sent you in photo, is in fact No.1, 4th Street !!!. So the house next to it (R) with the green roof is No.3, 4th Street, pritty sure of that. But this truly does NOT seem to resemble either house in the photo you sent me. Are you sure the word is FOURTH, maybe it could be something else ?. It might be we have the correct address, but the photo you have is not No.3, 4th Street, Malvern !!!. Off-list I will send a couple of other grave photos I took, I don't know if they will be of any value, they were near Lilian's grave: Surnames: JENKINS - GREEN. .B.S. ======================
Hello Heather: I took liberty today to go to the address at [Sandilands Rd, Malvern East]. I saw cars inside so I decided to ask permission to take a photo of the house. An elderly woman came out and I started to let her know why I was there. The conversation took a slight turn. It turns out they bought the house from John Black who built the house. What is interesting is that the current occupants knew John Black before they bought the house from him !!!. What I found even more interesting is that it came out the "SAMPSON family still lives just over the road" !!! !!! !!!. There is little doubt from my side that Lilian Sampson Williams is related to this SAMPSON family. Also mention of a Mr. Sampson (?) a preacher in Benoni/Boksburg, also a number others going to the St. James Church not too far away, another woman she said she would be phoning, and another very old woman maybe in her 80'2 of whom you would want to contact soon I would think, can't recall the name, etc. I think she would be able to help you a fair bit here. I will introduce you hereafter off-list via email, I have her email address. I left and took a single photo of the house from outside etc. I also took a photo of the St. Mary's the Less Church in Park Street in Jeppestown. If anyone else would like this particular photo too, let me know. .B.S. =========================
I am just speechless!! This is so exciting - John Black is my great uncle whom I met as a young girl once he was living in Margaret, he married Lilian Sampson WILLIAMS eldest daughter. It has been said that he also built the house next to the one he lived in too. Thank you so much for putting me in touch with her. I am eagerly awaiting my trip with so many new people to visit with and so much information to gather. Thank you so much for the photo of the grave, my mother is just overwhelmed - she now knows where her grandmother's final resting place is. Hello Heather: === This is YOUR William Garrity's Birth/Bap record !!!: Manchester, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1915 Birth, Marriage & Death Name: William Garrity Mother: Elizabeth Garrity Father: Thomas Garrity Birth: date Baptism: Lancashire === This is his father's marriage record which shows Thomas Garrity's father to be Michael Garrity !!!: Manchester, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1930 Marriage & Divorce Name: Thomas Garrity Spouse: Elizabeth Anderton Father: Michael Garrity Birth: year Marriage: Lancashire, England === This is almost undoubtedly the correct record for your William Garrity. You will have to obtain this record as for the second one, which CLEARLY gives Michael Garrity as the father of your Thomas Garrity !!!. This truly means you are one generation back now too.... You are in the RIGHT area here back in Manchester/Lancashire etc. You need to spend some time here too. This will hopefully place you and confirm that you truly back in the right place in England !!!. I suggest you rename your [William Arthur Garrity] to just [William Garrity] until any further second names are actually known to you. His birth record is there, and clearly a contingent of Garrity hereabouts. You have asked me a few times about where [William Garrity d:Abt 1916?] might be buried, I can only answer so much. It is suspected he is buried in the same grave as his wife who d:30-07-1950. I would think this is NOT the case, because if so, William Garrity would have been buried first 34 years earlier where the newly found grave of Lilian Sampson Garrity now rests. The headstone is only for Lilian, and on the right page of the book type headstone, it only says: "MOM". It's not MOM & DAD !!!. His place of rest is currently unknown.... However all round Lilian's grave are unmarked graves or so .... You need time to contact all your cousins. I feel you have quite a lot to go on with. I would just like to mention the photo on frame/page 14 (with the dog in it), that's a classic photo. I like the way you have done your tree, but one still needs a family tree database type program etc. === I have Always had a Sense of Spirituality being in High Places, Like being on the Top of a High Hill for Instance, But when being Too High up, I have a Sense of being Afraid of Heights.
