I try (where possible) to use the correct name for an area at the time of the specific occurrence. I get irritated when people add a date in the late 1800's and use the name Gauteng! Do you know the date the names Gauteng, Mpumulanga (spelling?) etc. came into use. I for instance was born in the Union of South Africa and married in the Republic of South Africa. I tend to use the names of the individual countries here in the U.K...... It was only after I left St. John's D.S.G. in Pietermaritzburg to go to school in the Transvaal that I learned that most of the girls I was at school with thought I came from the Island of St. Helena rather than St. Helena Mine, Welkom!
