My sister has asked me for my help. our Uncle died at Frangipani Nursing home in Bera. Durban. South Africa, years ago, believe his wife also died there, they were Charles Campbell and Betty Campbell, he was originally from Northern Ireland.. went to South Africa, came over to London when I was living at home a few times.. so hardly saw them, my late mothers brother, similar as my Auntie, mother sister, she was in Nairobi with her husband.. sad when families leave home and hardly ever seen again.. but the Nairobi ones did retire to England, but years later, nieces left home for New Zealand!!! Wonder if my Auntie and Uncle in Durban have headstones on the plots. I would guess they died about 1970-80s in S. Africa.. When I quote Northern Ireland, he was from Whitehead, lovely area, often had school holidays there, as he had his sister and a brother still living nearby. Charles left a family bible, wouldn't I love to find that treasure, they belonged to the Presbyterian church, so perhaps they have the Bible, it may list some family history which I need!!! I know at one time they lived in Jo'Burg.. Any guide for searching for anything on this family would be wonderful thanks, neither of the family in South or East Africa had issue. Adele Carterton. NZ
Hi Adele Your quest is going to be difficult! Frangipani Nursing Home, Essenwood Road, on the Durban Berea, closed down some years ago. I pass by often but am not sure what is there now. I will look in the next few days. Whether the previous owner is still alive and still has records is anyone's guess. The only way to try to trace your aunt & uncle would be to establish their dates of decease. If they had assets there will be a Deceased Estate file which will be lodged at the Master of the High Court's offices in Pietermaritzburg. If the deaths were after 1973 the only way to obtain the file reference is for someone to physically search the annual Index books at the Master's office. This will be time consuming. Once the Deceased Estate file is located it will indicate who the Executor was and he/she/they will be able to indicate what happened to the family Bible. Adrian Kloof, nr. Hello Adele, I have searched the SA Genealogy website for Charles' grave, I have come up with several. Have a look at this website. You maybe fortunate to find the correct one.http://www.eggsa.org/cgi-bin/library/searchGraves.pl Kind regards Fay -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Adele Pentony-Graham Sent: 11 January 2014 01:18 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA] Frangipani Nursing Home My sister has asked me for my help. our Uncle died at Frangipani Nursing home in Bera.
