Bart- very many thanks! I have the 1892 passenger record and will look at the 1900 one- if it is "our John KNIPE" . John's parents are William and Eleanor but the parents never came out to SA. Of their 9 children, one died as an infant, the youngest daughter Eleanor Maud, stayed in Cumberland, Jane Forrester's daughter from her first marriage came to SA in 1920, Robina's son came as did her daughter- but the daughter returned to Cumberland- and the rest came to SA and stayed. I have all the documentation- and all of these have been well researched. John was the problem-as there are no estate papers for him, but I will try and get hold of the death cert of Eleanor O'NEAL/KNIPE/THOMPSON. That will clarify a great deal. The burial records told us nothing more than the gravestone. I found a passenger record for James Findlay and his wife Olive- listed as a civil servant Tanganynika- so that is enough for me! I am chuffed that we are on track now with his story, and can finish off the KNIPES of Cumberland. The COAD/TRENGOVE story will be done when I sort out the twins descendants!
