Hi Bart This William John Hughes that married Catherine Millen is not my great great grandfather. What I am trying to establish is how and when my William Hughes landed up in Port Elizabeth as well as trying to figure out who his parents are and where in Ireland he came from. This is what I have on him. William Hughes born c. 1830 died 1880 On the 13 May 1862 he married Catherine Ryan at St Augustines church in PE. I have a copy of the marriage certificate. On the 15th Jan 1863 Catherine died. On the 18th January 1865 he then married Bridget Kearney (she came over with the Aided Immigration in 1861 with John Kearney, Mary (his wife) and Edmond. They were coming to Patrick Kearney who arrived in 1860. There was also a James Kearney that arrived in 1860. William and Bridget had 3 sons - John (my great grandfather) 1865-1853, Michael 1867-1867 and Daniel 1869-1956. On the old St Augustines census list for 1875 it says: William Hughes age 46 living in Adderley Street, a labourer, born Ireland. Wife Bridget age 29 also of Ireland. Children John age 8 and Daniel age 6. As far as I know he never left PE. They were all devout Catholics and their parish was St Augustines. I have all the marriage and burial records for William and Bridget as well as the baptism records for their 3 children. As far as the Thomas Kearney is concerned, I don't think he belongs to my lot either. None of the Kearney's left PE either. Bridget and all the Kearney's mentioned above are definitely related, either siblings or cousins but I think siblings. I have checked all the children's baptism records and they all were witnesses to their children's baptisms. Again all took place at St Augustines. John Hughes (my great grandfather) married Isabella Mary LaTouche Frost (from the Frost 1820 Settler clan). They had loads of children and one of them, James, went to Queenstown. The gravestone you posted is his. He married Blanche McLelland. He is the only one I know of that went to Queenstown. Thanks for the help Patty -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bart Simon Sent: 28 February 2014 02:25 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA] John Hughes Correction: She is BAPTIZED in Queenstown [mm/dd/yy] [Baptized: 5/28/1866] but [Born: 7/7/1846].
