Hi to the list Last year I posted transcriptions on the SA TRANSVAAL list from the LONGLAND'S 1893 Johannesburg Street Directory, which covers Johannesburg and Doornfontein and because of the interest in Johannesburg I thought it would post it here as well. Johannesburg was a new town - only 7 years old and you you may be interested to notice the fact that there was a bar/pub on practically every corner. In the index I counted 215 Bars and 21 Beer halls, clearly catering to the need of thirsty miners and businessmen!! Here is a link to a great Street Map of early Johannesburg (1897) to find the layout of the town: http://wiredspace.wits.ac.za/bitstream/handle/10539/9352/BCS2_1142%20JHB.JPG?sequence=1 and I also found this map very interesting: http://wiredspace.wits.ac.za//handle/10539/12691 Abstract: Printing of 1895 updated with new sheets and revision stickers issued in June 1910 and with subtitle: Transvaal Colony. South Africa ... The activities or company name on each erf (stand) in every block in the central and commercial areas of Johannesburg are shown. The Alphabetical list of Residents and businesses which I am currently busy with, also covers the emerging suburbs like Fordsburg, Hillbrow, Jeppestown etc. and these I will post after completing the Street Directory. Lastly my apologies to all who have already seen the transcriptions on the Transvaal list and will be getting a double dose :) Regards Shirley
