While Mansell Upham certainly has ruffled some feathers with his direct, sometimes sarcastic and opiniated style of writing, I have no complaints. He has always been courteous in dealing with me. Mansell has been expanding on his work in his writings for Delia Robertson's First Fifty Years (FFY) project on www.e-family.co.za. I share with him an admiration for the work of people like Lalie Malan and Margaret Cairns. While we are there, Lalie Malan's "The Louws of Louwvliet" is about the first burgher settlers on the Liesbeeck River. The Louws farmed what is now Newlands and Rondebosch. That book, and also about a dozen from Margaret Cairns' collection (which I bought after she died) are going to ACPL. I'm sure it was in the 1990's..... Way back. I have a couple of those copies. Way back when, when Mansell Upham was the editor (around 2000?), I bought the complete set, and have been a subscriber ever since. It includes the first issue of Capensis, which was simply a newsletter on a single sheet of paper. It also includes the issues that contain papers written by Mansell Upham. He did some incredible research into slaves and early Cape society, and the journal during his tenure as editor is quite remarkable. These issues are no longer obtainable. As I understand it, there has been some sort of copyright argument, and the articles by Mansell Upham are not included on the Capensis CD. But, later this year, you will be able to visit them at the Allen County Public Library!
